Did you hear that?!

That’s right, horses have 10 muscles in each ear which allows them to rotate the ear 180 degrees!

No wonder it’s hard to get those ears forward for a pic 😂

In a previous post, we discussed types of leases. Now, let’s chat through some reasons you may choose to lease a horse rather than buy!

The short of it? Time, Money, Experience are key factors when making this decision.

I’ve laid out four reasons here, but I’d love to hear about any other reasons you’ve leased a horse! Drop them in the comments and let’s start the discussion :)

Horse riding. Does not Equal. Horsemanship.

Read that again.

Over the past couple months, I haven’t been able to ride as much. For a myriad of reasons: my horse’s training program. My schedule. Physical ailments on both of our parts. You get the picture.

But over the past couple months, I feel like I’ve been able to grow in horsemanship. What do I mean by that? I mean I’ve been working on skills and learning things out of the saddle that help me understand my horse, horses in general, better.

And that’s what I think horsemanship is about. The ongoing journey to learn as much as you can about these awesome animals so we can develop a profound partnership.

How’s your horsemanship journey?

Listen up, Y’all - this is an important one.

I had an important and kind of uncomfortable conversation with a good friend of mine regarding similarity in content. And I was in the wrong. Not intentionally, and I feel just awful, but I was. It was a tough convo, but I’m really glad we had it because it brought to light two truths:

1. It is SO important to be honest with each other when we feel content copying has happened.

2. While we may all talk about similar topics, we can differentiate through insights and presentation.

Based on this, I felt compelled to share a couple tips for preventing ourselves from copying content.

See a cool idea or layout that you want to modify? When in doubt, ask. Ask the original creator if it’s ok, and give them credit!

If your struggling with that, prevent yourself from copying by muting accounts or working with a social media manager. This ensures that you’re not seeing other people’s ideas or your deferring content ideas to a professional. And if someone does bring a concern to you, try not to get defensive. You may be unaware, it may not have been intentional, but it still matters.

Creators work hard to create original content. And it’s our responsibility as a community, to give credit where credit is due 🙏

MINI SERIES - Part 5 of 6: Data Analytics

Equestrian business owners often have a million things on their mind and most of the time, data interpretation isn’t the first, or even a single, priority. But learning to harness and understand data driven insights is an incredibly powerful and overlooked tool that we encourage business owners to tap into!

Simply put, data is essentially any piece of information that is associated with the business on arepeated basis. Things like client names, addresses, service dates, and horse breed types are just some examples of common pieces of data that equestrians gather.

And the really good news is there are insights already built into a lot of the most commonly used tools for equestrian entrepeneurs. Instagram, shopify, square space and facebook all have separate analytics pages that are a great place to start when learning to analyze data.

Most importantly, though, data analytics allows equestrian business owners to develop their corporate strategy by setting measurable goals and concretely tracking progress to those goals. It can analyze the past and help to predict the future, and ultimately limit the “guess work” involved in some business decisions.

There’s so much power in understanding where you’re business is today in order to make informed decisions on how you’d like to shape it’s future, and data analytics is a critical component in doing that.

Interested in tapping into your data? specializes in analyze data through custom reporting - we’d love to hear from you!

Let’s talk Long-Lining!

Long-Lining is a commonly used groundwork modality that has been a game changer in my horse’s training. To be honest, I didn’t know what long-lining was a year ago, and I’m so happy I’ve been able to add it to my training toolkit.

Why, you may ask? Well, here are 5 benefits of long-lining as a training aid!

1. Provides insight to a horse’s movement - is your horse bulging out? Track better to the right? This will show you loud and clear.

2. Provides variety - horses (and riders) get bored doing the same thing all the time. This is a great way to switch it up!

3. Helps to develop topline - this helps your horse build their muscles, particularly their abdominals and back muscles, properly

4. Helps to identify and improve weakness - is your horse short in the hind? This can help improve that!

5. Helps start young horses - this is a great tool for helping to teach young horses the basics without having to be in the saddle!

I personally am a long-lining convert, and I wish I knew about this sooner. Do you use long-lines? Drop a 🤠 in the comments!

Equine business owners are often being stretched in a million different directions. Honestly, sometimes I feel like we rival jugglers with how many metaphorical balls we have to keep in the air. And isn’t that just freaking badas*?!

But as awesome and capable as we are, there comes a time when we need to consider growing our teams. Maybe it’s time to hire that expert. Or hire an assistant. Or ask for some help. And guess what? That’s a GOOD thing.

So here are four signs that it may be time to grow your team! And that doesn’t mean hiring full time - you could hire a consultant or to fill seasonal demand. There’s so much flexibility in growth!

Some ways I’ve hired is by outsourcing, at times, my social media, hiring a logo designer, and talking to a business coach. None of these are permanent, but they took a ton of stress off of me and I learned so much!

So I ask you to consider what would you hire for? And by the way? Congratulations, because growth is great :)

In honor of , I wanted to share some facts about the LGBTQ+ community in the equestrian world 🌈

Did you know that only 15.6% of equestrians (per zippia) identify as part of the LGBTQ community? And also, finding any publicly available stats on this was really difficult!

Regardless, I’d love to hear your thoughts on this. It’s clear every time I do research into the equestrian world that we have room to improve to diversify our sport. How do you think the equestrian community can create a more welcoming environment?

MINI SERIES - Part 4 of 6: Marketing

While social media (see post 3) is a big aspect of marketing, it isn’t the only way to draw attention to your business. Equine Business Owners should consider diversifying their marketing strategy across different verticals.

Which verticals you may ask? Some to consider include:

⁃ Conferences
⁃ Materials ie. business cards and flyers
⁃ Word of Mouth (WoM)
- Advertisements

Conferences such as Land Rover, Equine Affaire and Horse Expo are great ways to promote your business and provide great networking opportunities along with setting up a vendor booth at local tack sales.

Materials such as business cards and flyers are great to post around your area and keep on hand. Don’t be afraid to hand them out to horse owners at the barn or at horse shows.

Finally, WOM is a hugely powerful marketing technique. Customers that talk about you are invaluable and huge promoters of your business. Consider incentivizing this with a referral discount!

Have you done any of these? Other suggestions! Let us know ⬇️

Kissing Spines: Part 2

So your horse has a confirmed diagnosis of Kissing Spines - now what?

Now it’s time to manage the condition and the possible, but not definite, symptoms of the condition.

There are two primary categories for kissing spine treatment: surgical and non-surgical. Often the methods are combined as part of a holistic treatment plan, but today let’s focus on the non-surgical.

Here are 5 things you can do to help a horse with kissing spine.

Hill work - this helps your horse strengthen their hind end.

Belly Lifts and Tail tucks - these stretches ask your horse to tighten their abdominals and engage their top lines, which temporarily increases the space between spinous processes.

Lunging Aids - Long Lines and Pessoa systems encourage your horse to use their core muscles and strengthen their backs.

Saddle Fit - Have a saddle fitter come out and check your saddle.

Do you have experience with kissing spine? Questions? Lmk!

MINI SERIES - Part 2 of 6: Strategy

Business Strategy is an extremely important yet difficult to define topic for any small business owner. So let’s break it down to three areas that can help you approach it:

Services

Choosing the services you want to offer - or don’t want to offer - is absolutely essential when defining a strategy. Consider what your primary or first service offering may be and what other offerings could go with it. Some businesses are natural continuations of each other, such as equine massage and PEMF therapy, but others might not be as natural of a fit.

This is not to say it isn’t ok to offer services across different aspects of the equine world - it totally is - but it is important to know your mission and offering well enough to be able to clearly communicate them to potential customers and peers in the space.

Networking

Business owners are not alone, even though it may feel like you operate in a vacuum at times. That’s why networking is SO important to the success of a business and frankly, a business owner’s well being.

Networking often provides opportunities to discuss strategy and to grow the business. Often times bartering, where you may be able to trade one service for another, comes into play which is a win-win!

Running a business is hard. Gaining clients is imperative and it’s important to be able to
bounce ideas off of others; collaboration almost always helps a business grow stronger.

Brand Essentials

Having a recognizable brand is well worth the investment when starting your business. A consistent color scheme and a logo go a long way towards creating a cohesive image for your customers and also help you protect your content from copycats!

What do you think? Have you thought about any of these? Let us know! ⬇️
