I’m often asked what do we do with the puppies each week to make sure they have a good stable upbringing. So here is a snippet of what the pups get from us in the first week beyond basic care from their dam.

09/28/2023

As a dog trainer I see a lot of puppies taken from their mom and littermates too early. They are usually the puppy who cannot settle. Who have a tendency to stick everything in their mouth, especially the human. Please leav the babies with their dam and littermates till 8 weeks. They learn so much from them!!

Why buy a puppy from a show breeder? Give this a good read.

Let’s look at what health testing should be done for miniature American/Australian shepherds.
OFA should be done on hips and elbows as without these X-rays there is no way to confirm if a dog does or does not have dysplasia.
CAER eye exams by a certified ophthalmologist should be done every year. The breed has eye diseases that are not yet identified via DNA.
Full DNA panels for all testable diseases to the miniature American shepherds and the Australian shepherd. There are quite a few and a proactive breeder concerned with their dogs and the puppies they produces health will do these panels!
Merle allele, not as common, but a lot of color issues as well as those who contribute to vision and hearing loss are caused by breeders not knowing that their “tri” looking dogs are actually hidden Merle’s with the Mc+ or higher numbers. As well as high merle numbers who can delete pigmentation on their own. Deleting pigmentation in the ear canal, around the eyes etc does cause issues for a pet that can be avoided.
Nuetral Anoxal Disease is a NEW test as of September 2023. This is a very devastating nuero condition that causes dogs around a year to loose control of their legs, balance issues and a lot more! As a breeder this is an issue we NEED to be testing every breeding dog for. This should be tested for to breed away the carriers of this disease.
If you have any questions please feel free to ask!

POTENTIAL OWNER: How much is the puppy?
BREEDER: $1800+ dollars.
POTENTIAL OWNER: What?? It's way too expensive!!
BREEDER: What do you think would be a good price?
POTENTIAL OWNER: No more than $500. You breeders are so overpriced.
BREEDER: I am sorry you see it this way; why don't you try it yourself?
POTENTIAL OWNER: But I've never done it!
BREEDER: For FREE, I can teach you how to do it, and you will also have the knowledge of how to do it again.
POTENTIAL OWNER: Perfect, thank you!
BREEDER: To start, you will need a female(average cost $3500 and up)and a male(average cost $3500 and up) or semen (average $2000-$2500 and up). You will need to do genetic & health testing on them, which averages about $800+ per dog.

Let's not forget progesterone testings, inseminations, ultrasounds, x-rays, semen collections, semen analysis, potentially semen overnight shipping, and so on ($1500+).
Raise and provide daily care, feeding & grooming for two years. (minimal $250 per month) Oh, don’t forget monthly prevention, annual vet visits, and any other additional vet visits.
POTENTIAL OWNER: But I don't have that much money...

BREEDER: For $1200, you can raise a litter and then keep one of the puppies. Obviously, you will pay the cost of whelping & care.
POTENTIAL OWNER: I can do that.
BREEDER: OK, so I have a female due to whelp in 2 weeks. You will need to be available 24/7 around the clock for at least eight weeks to help with delivery and care. ( a million loads of laundry) Another 4-plus weeks to monitor mom and puppies.
POTENTIAL OWNER: twelve weeks?? It's way too much time for me! I have to work.
BREEDER: Plus, You will need to be available for puppy families to call you 24/7 with a worry or concern, no matter the age. You MUST also be ready to take back the puppy/dog at any age if the family has an unforeseen emergency.
BREEDER: You will also need the reproductive vet to do progesterone testing($110/ test ), X-ray to get headcount ($100) & C-section($1000-$5000 if needed), and initial vet care on pups until old enough to be placed ($800+).
Have on hand a scale, thermometer, latex gloves, puppy pads, incubator, oxygen concentrator, nebulizer, heating lamp, whelping box, puppy pen, blankets, toys, bowls, cleaning supplies, appropriate food with supplements for mothers, formula, medications & hand feeding supplies in case of emergency...
POTENTIAL OWNER: But I don't have all these things!
BREEDER: For $5000+, you can buy them.
POTENTIAL OWNER: Ummm .... You know, I think it might be better if I just buy a puppy.
BREEDER: Wise decision.
For us, there are no vacations or holidays; while you go to visit with family & friends, we are home at our dogs' side caring for them. It is a no-break commitment.
THIS IS THE REALITY
When you choose a reputable person, you aren’t only purchasing the puppy but also knowledge, support, experience, love, time, sacrifices, etc...
**Plus the cost of lifetime support to the puppy owners…
These numbers are just the tip of the iceberg, (best-case scenario!!!) As a reputable breeder who takes on this journey full-time!
Very well said…

🚨🚨🚨ANNOUNCEMENT🚨🚨🚨

We have tested for the infamous MDR1 gene in the past however its become clear through science and stories of personal experience/losses that this particular gene is NOT the answer to the fatal sensitivities experienced by Aussies to certain drugs. Aussies that are tested clear for the mutant/at risk MDR1 gene are still DYING from drug overdoses! This "clear testing" is giving owners and veterinarians a false sense of security when it comes to medical decisions. Over all it appears to be a breed related, but very manageable condition when taken into consideration. Therefore from this point on we will not be concerning ourselves with MDR1 testing in regards to breeding. We will be recommending all of our puppies (and any Aussie) be treated as MDR1 AFFECTED/AT RISK no matter what their genetic status says. This way no mistakes or assumptions are made that risk the life of your puppy. Below are a list of high risk medications that should be off limits for your Aussie. We will be sending a copy home with all of our families from now on.

Some theories for this sensitivity are related to a more permeable blood brain barrier in relation to other breeds or they could be having trouble ridding their body of the medications so it builds up to a toxic level over time. This could be why some are fine and then one day die after the dose of medication is administered. It could also be like some people and alcohol, they need much less of the medication to be affected and a "normal dose" for their weight is actually an overdose. There are many safe, common alternatives to the listed medications and therefore your Aussie can live a perfectly normal life provided those alternatives are used.

At any rate the genetic testing in regards to MDR1 appears to be doing more harm than good. We will no longer be using this marker in breeding decisions as it doesn't appear to give any useful information in regards to "preventing" the sensitivities and worse is putting Aussie at lives at risk due to false sense of security of having a "clear" Aussie puppy. We will be doubling down on awareness and arming our families with knowledge to help them make the best decisions for their Aussie family members going forward. We remain committed to genetic testing as a tool to produce the healthiest puppies possible but we will also heavily research to make sure we are making the absolute best use of those tools. This is one way we are doing just that. Please review the list and feel free to copy it for future reference.
