“Passion is a powerful force. Passion properly directed is unstoppable. Every successful person in life began by pursuing a passion, usually against all odds. The size of your success is measured by the strength of your desire, size of your dream and how you handle disappointments along the way.”
- Robert Kiyosaki

I was raised by two very creative people.
Artists, if you will.

My mom, Beth is an actual artist. Pencils, charcoal, and in recent years digital graphics are her medium of choice. She is a graphic designer by trade. You can tell her your vision for a logo, tattoo, or graphic and she brings it to life. She just envisions it.

My dad, Trip is one of those people that is naturally keen to everything he tries. Dad, if you read this, don’t argue—it’s a fact, you’re a hand. But his most creativity, I always thought, was found in music. He’s one of those people that can hear it and play it. He not only can play, mostly string instruments, but he can mix music and sound as well. He just hears how it should sound in any type of space or venue and makes it happen.

And here I am, the product of an artist mother (who is also a horsewoman) and a musical father (who is also a dog trainer).
I’m not much of a drawer.
Like, I kinda can… my notes when I was in school were more doodles than notes (ask Melissa).
Musically. Well, I might be able to still play Twinkle Twinkle Little Star on my old bass guitar, if I can remember how to read the music. 🎼 Maybe.🤔

I can write decently. ✍️ 🤷🏻‍♀️

I am the product of two incredibly creative people, and my obsession is horses.
Since I was a kid, I couldn’t get enough of them. I woke up thinking about them, went to bed thinking about them, and if you could ever convince me to even consider my future—all I could picture was horses.

So I moved to Texas the day after I graduated high school to pursue a career in horses. I went to school, Elliot and I opened Versatile Horsemanship, LLC.

Long story shortened some; overtime, God placed a particular set of people into my life through the horse. That handful of people have helped me focus, find my own creative inspiration, and begin to define my purpose by just simply being apart of my life.
**Pro tip: Your circle matters. 👏🏻

There’s this song by Somebody's Darling, it’s called “Horses” and part of the chorus goes something like, “I found God, watching the horses.”
That line right there resonates.

I found my passion, own artistic creativity in order to connect, communicate, and maybe even inspire.
Not through visual art, like my mother.
Not through music, like my father.
Instead, through the horse.

Freestyles, performing, especially what goes into interacting with these horses at Liberty is creative to me. It sparks a fire and has lit up the path to purpose.

When I’m out there with my horses, it’s not about the attention or the spotlight. If you believe that then you truly don’t know me at all.
My comfort zone is in the back alley as the groom and the cheerleader. 📣

Shoot. I spent most of elementary school and part of middle school in speech therapy classes because I had such a bad stutter that I could hardly communicate vocally. Why was a quiet kid? I literally couldn’t spit words out. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤐

But we are at our best when we are challenged.
We find out just what we’re made of when we are pushed out of our comfort zone.
Do you rise to the occasion when challenged to expand your comfort zone?
Or do you back down and retreat with your tail between your legs?

Training horses, coaching people, and performing with horses is my own creative way of communicating and reaching people.
And I’ll be honest, it can be real uncomfortable pursuing your passion. It takes guts, it takes faith, and relentlessly staying the course.

It’s not about the spotlight, fulfilling ego, or even being validated.
It’s about growing.
It’s about challenging yourself.
Finding your peace.
Finding your purpose.
It is about becoming a better version of the horseman and the human being than you were yesterday.

Find your passion, find your purpose, and be relentless in pursuit of it.

That calling in your heart, your mind, and in your guts has been put there for a reason.

So quit talking about it and go for it already, even if the odds are stacked against you. 🙌🏻🔥

𝐓𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐀𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍.

The toughest part of dreaming a dream and setting a goal is taking action.

Your dreams and your goals are important, but the reality is that without action—you become stagnant, you stay comfortable, you make excuses, and your dreams and goals remain only an idea rather than a reality.

Think about where you want to be in regard to one dream and one goal that you have in ONE YEAR from now.

Next.
Figure out what the first step is that you must take in order to achieve that one year goal.

Then.
Identify the change, the sacrifice, that you must make in order to take that first step and remain on the path to achieving your one year goal.

You don’t have to be realistic—I don’t love that term, it’s too limiting—but you must be HONEST with yourself.

Finally.
Take the step. Make the change. TAKE ACTION.

It will not be easy. But it will be WORTH IT.

So, what is your dream?
Your 1 year goal?
What is the change is there to make?
How are you going to take action?

Punk.
P***y.
P***y pony.

For those of you who are new here, Punk is one of my (Caitie’s) sorrel horses. He is the OG of my team of little red cow ponies. Punk is Cuban’s partner in crime, and is an instigator of controlled chaos. 🤦🏻‍♀️

((SIDE NOTE- Cuban is my other horse, who’s “about” post is here: https://www.facebook.com/share/p/9W8RbGqXFMikN4ZX/?mibextid=WC7FNe))

Punk is my own very first, true blue—well, red rather 🤷🏻‍♀️—cow horse.

If a horse could be smug… Punk would be the definition. Like Cuban, he has a fierceness about him, and he is quite broke… however, unlike Cuban, Punk just is not always gentle. He is an intelligent, persnickety, boundary-testing skeptical clown that has a gritty, kind heart in his own way. Some might say he’s hard to love. 🤷🏻‍♀️

As far as forage goes, he can only have alfalfa due to being so prone to colic.
Punk sorts, yes literally sorts, his alfalfa into a pile of leaves and and a pile of stems, and much prefers the leaves 🍃, eats those first, and kinda-sorta picks at the stems. Kinda. 🙄
If it’s in a hay net, he has his own system of twirling and shaking the hay net to get the good bits out first and leave the stems. The whole thing reminds me of horses that dunk hay in their water buckets, sort of.

Punk is incredibly honest. You always know how he feels—for better or worse.
If he’s in the slightest bit of pain—you know. Remember the Princess and the Pea? That’s Punk.
If he’s feeling cheeky—it’s obvious.
If he’s full of anxiety, irritated, or fresh—you definitely know. 🫣 🐉
That intense honesty is something I’ve always appreciated about him. 😂

He still bucks around like a little red rocking horse when lunged with a saddle. To this day. You’re better off just swinging a leg over him and going forward. Then he’s fine.
All aboard the Punk train. 🫡 🚂 🤣

This whole “punk-a**” persona is how Punk actually got his name. When he first came in and we were starting him under saddle, Elliot referred to him as “the punk a** c**t”. He was never a true broncy buggar, he was just a punk. His registered name is “Mega Jacd For Chics” so I originally thought I’d call him “Romeo” or something along those lines… but it just didn’t fit him. “Punk” however, was the ticket.

Punk is my favorite horse to go down the fence with. What he lacks in freaky athleticism, he makes up for in his ability to read and rate a cow. He is keen and aware, and is fast… but a smooth operator. He’s also a hand when it comes to working and sorting cattle in the back pens, so at clinics he’s my pick when I’m swapping cows around back there for you guys.

He’s always favored the waspy cattle and works better on those types.
I’ve always felt that Punk is at his best when he’s challenged. If anything seems too mundane or mindlessly repetitive, he gets bored and then more mischief than normal is afoot.

Along with being my first cow horse, he was my very first Liberty horse and he is still THE horse that I would cut loose at Liberty in thousands of acres or in the middle of town and have the confidence that he’d be there with me. When the pressure is on and there’s things to accomplish, he thrives.

Punk has a relatively long list of accomplishments.
Probably my favorites on his resume are the photograph of him and Elliot by Knox Kronenberg, where Punk is rearing on a bridge in Dallas, Texas, at day break with the skyline behind and rush hour traffic below. That image is not photoshopped—it’s real.

Another is Punk’s part of the cow horse act where he runs in at Liberty and mirror images Cuban.
There are a handful of other horses mark trained to work the flag/mechanical cow, but to my knowledge Punk may be one of the only, or the only one, mark trained to “work” another horse and with consistency.
And his enthusiasm when he runs to me is just the best.🔥😎

He’s quite the professional when it matters most—I mean, he adds his own flare (he’s still Punk, after all 🤷🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️)—when the heat is on, when he’s challenged, he’s all in. He can turn it up and then shut back down in an instant.

Punk is loyal to a fault to his herd mates. Like, he’s kind of a creepy loyal when it comes to Cuban and can even be possessive. Punk was orphaned at a young age, like at 3 or 4 months old, so I sometimes wonder if he missed some of the “norms” in foal socialization from his dam. 🤷🏻‍♀️ That’s a rabbit hole post for a different day though.

How Punk came be mine—
My black horse, Outlaw was needing to semi-retire from doing much more than light riding and being a pasture puff. I was sad. He was my heart, still is, he gave me SO much confidence. It was hard to go into the barn every day knowing my main mount wasn’t going to be the one I partnered with to do jobs, learn with, and show anymore.

But Elliot and Miranda reminded my that I had dreams and goals that I wasn’t going to accomplish if I wasn’t on the back of a horse.

So I had a VERY small budget and started browsing some horses.

I found Punk on a Facebook add.
He was tiny.
I’d never owned a sorrel.
Miranda looked at his papers and thought he’d probably be cowy enough that I could start to get into reined cow horse and continue in the versatility.
Elliot liked his price.
So. In February 2017, Elliot and I drove to Roaring Springs, TX to look at this scrappy sorrel c**t.
On the way, we stopped in Nocona, Texas at the only Wells Fargo around to withdraw some cash in the event that I decided to buy the c**t.

((SIDE NOTE- Fast forward to more present-day, THIS event of finding the Wells Fargo here in Nocona on the way to get Punk is how I would ultimately come to find the sale listing in 2022 for the facility that we now OWN. That’s right, Punk helped us find our own dirt.))

We got out of the truck in West Texas and I took one look at that jug headed, moose nosed, pancake-footed c**t and I did not want to take him home. I couldn’t. I was still so heart broken about my black horse that I couldn’t see all that Punk had in him.

Elliot knew better though.

He made on offer on Punk and the sellers accepted it so we loaded up the sorrel c**t and drove him home. He told me that I could train him up and ride him for a bit and if I didn’t like him, I could sell him. I would come to find out much later that I was Punk’s 4th or 5th owner by the time he turned two.

The first day I had him home, I went to catch him out of the paddock and he bit me on the back of the arm while I was leading him. 🙄

We wormed him, groomed him, fed him, got his feet shaped up for a couple of weeks and then Elliot put about 10 rides on him, we gave him some time off, and then I took him over.
Punk wasn’t in bad shape when we got him by any means, I just couldn’t see the swan behind that awkward, leggy duckling.

It was Punk’s ridiculous personality and outrageous honesty that made me fall for him and decide to keep him.
Punk made me look forward to going outside to the barn again.

He won me my first buckle and my first check. I invite you all to look at the running horse in our logo, peep 👀 the face markings on the image—it’s Punk. That’s how special he is. 😂🤣

There’s so much more depth to Punk that I could go on forever. Like an ogre, he has layers 🤷🏻‍♀️😂

Here’s to Punk—my OG cow horse, Liberty horse, and RED horse.
God sparked something big in my life through that scrappy little sorrel c**t and connected me with so many people, experiences, and lessons that I sure needed in my life then and now.

About Us

Versatile Horsemanship, LLC is owned and operated by Elliot and Caitie Holtzman now located at Cross Creek Ranch in Gainesville, Texas. We are a low-key horse training operation with the goal of teaching and training through furthering our educations and bettering our own handiness about horses. We work one-on-one with our clients and their horses to help them achieve their goals and to help enable them to successfully and safely handle and ride their own horses. We offer c**t starting and training with the versatile performance horse in mind.
