Line breding in rabbits is (in my opinion) essential for producing great rabbits. When the goal is to be competitive on a national level and build your herd to that point, line breeding helps to strengthen their traits. This also helps in creating and improving “extremes” in your herd. “Extremes” are a wow factor, you’ll be hopeless on the BIS table without a wow factor to make your rabbit stand out to a judge who is typically looking at 20-30 beautiful BOB winning animals. I personally work a lot on the topline and body of my petites and I truly believe that is why I’ve had such success with showing and being competitive with juniors against senior age animals. Stunning type acts as the wow factor to give them the winning edge. I’ve been honored to win an open RIS with a petite as young as 4.5 months, that buck also happens to have one of my best “extreme” toplines. Without line breeding, capturing and continuing these extremes would be near impossible. With that being said, as it locks in the good traits, it also locks in the bad. You must breed carefully and consider your pairing and your ultimate goal. It’s more than breeding two animals and hoping for a child that is better. You simply have to look beyond that and see the faults your herd has as a whole and improve that as well. If you’re struggling with narrow shoulders in your herd and breed two animals with narrow shoulders because they’re a good pairing everywhere else, it means you are solidifying that trait in the herd even more for future generations. You have to be able to consider that and rationalize if the small single generational improvement is actually beneficial in the long term for your herd.
Line breeding does not make rabbits worse, bad and un-thought out breeding does that.

All of my petites are related in some way, some more than others, but all are related. This buck is one of my upcoming jrs pictured at about 11 weeks. While his ears definitely need some help, he’s promising and I’d like to mention 3/4 of his great grandsires are the same buck. It is very much line bred and definitely still improving on previous generations.
