✨Teaching a Release Word✨
Often we teach our dogs sit then say good boy, give them a treat in place and walk away. Essentially you’re teaching your dog when the food is gone we’re done training.
But we’re not going to be using food forever.
There’s not always going to be a piece of food in front of your dog so it’s important to teach them to listen to your words and not just focus on your hand or the food.

Teaching your dog a release word to let them know they’re “done” provides clear communication.

I personally use “okay” but break or free are also good options. It doesn’t matter what the word is at long as you consistently use it.

So if you ask your dog down, don’t leave them hanging.. Make sure you tell them “okay!” so they can walk away and go do their dog thing.

Key times I use “Okay” are when I’m letting dogs out of their kennel, through exterior doors, out of the car and when I’ve asked for a heel/sit/down/place and they no longer need to do that.

If this is something new you’re teaching your dog, understand they won’t understand at first. When teaching this I generally just walk away or I’ll use gentle leash or collar pressure through the doorway or out of the sit (whatever you are releasing them from).

It’s important to note I DO NOT give food or a reward after this-I have other “marker” words for that.

Clear communication provides your dog clarity and clarity is key in having a dog that listens (and a healthy human dog relationship 🙌)

✨Lifestyle Dog Training✨

This is incorporating training your dog into everyday life vs specific training sessions.

Training sessions are great for teaching specific behaviors (sit, down, heel, place), building engagement, building confidence and beneficial for owner-dog relationship.

All vital for meaningful training that lasts. But often training utilized in everyday life is over looked.

Your dog is learning more from your daily flow, interactions and experiences than from a 20 minute session going through every obedient command they know.

When your dog is overly excited - you can ask for sit but how far will that get you?

This is where practicing a calmer mindset throughout the day would be the beneficial. Things like practicing place, waiting for food, waiting at doorways, being patient when exciting resources or people are present can go further than all the obedient commands you can teach.

So yes training sessions should be a part of your training but think about how you’re interacting with your dog everyday.

✨A Gentle Reminder to Enjoy Your Dog✨

Spend quality time with them.
Do something they truly enjoy.
Relax outside with them, in the sun and in nature. Honor dogs for the creatures they are and most of all just be the best friend they need.

3 Things to Know about Having a Multiple Dog household.

1- Quality time with each dog is important in developing individual relationships. That can be in the form of one on one play, a solo walk or training session.

2- Mental and physical stimulation will provide fulfillment and help in preventing frustration. Having multiple dogs frustrated or even just one can lead to behavioral issues and inner household aggression.

3- Guarding of food is more likely to happen with multi dog households. Feeding dogs separately can easily prevent this before it happens. Be sure to give high value treats and stay in their presence, making sure all dogs respect each other’s space. Dogs can also resource guard people so leadership is important in preventing this issue.

How many dogs do you have?

Lazy dog days

It’s okay to have a lazy day or “break from training” day with your dog. That doesn’t mean go back to old habits. But you can certainly take it easy, maybe skip active training sessions, provide some enrichment with a treat filled toy or play fetch.

I like to plan “lazy” days based on the weather and my schedule.
Oh it’s going to be hot tomorrow? I’ll hit the park today and tomorrow we can do more place work, give a stuffed kong and cuddle on the couch.

I think as long as you’re fulfilling dogs well on most days (like walks, play, some some obedience) off days are completely acceptable and good for you and your dog.

What’s your dogs favorite thing to do on a lazy day?

Training dogs isn’t just about training. It’s about preventing, managing and untraining

Untraining is difficult and takes time. And majority of what owners need help with.
Fortunately, Most unwanted behaviors can be easily resolved by stopping it from the start.

When “what we consider bad behaviors” happen, it takes 1-2 times for them to learn “Hey, I can do this”.
What I mean by “What we consider bad behaviors” - it means jumping, stealing food, running across the house, tearing things up, marking-these are 100% normal dog behaviors and they’re going to display them.
You can prepare for that, you can interrupt it when it happens or do nothing.

A good example is my dog Sonya. She started pawing at me to get on the couch one night. I wanted to see where it would go-like a little experiment.
I ignored her and continued to watch tv. She pawed me again. And probably about 5 more times. She just kept doing it until I finally said No.
Did I find it cute and funny? Absolutely but I knew if I didn’t interrupt her it would turn into an annoying behavior - especially if I let her on the couch in that moment.

Dogs repeat behaviors because they bring value -whether that’s food, affection, freedom, or energy (positive or negative).

Doing nothing will only get you further into these behaviors.

-Interrupt if able
-Be prepared it may happen again so you can interrupt the next time
-Improve management of your environment/dog (dog jumps on people-put a leash on them or kennel with guests)
-Teach a behavior you’d rather have (Teach a dog that jumps on people to go to place)

Does your dog have any unwanted behaviors you’re working on ?

Car anxiety

Some dogs may pants excessively, pace in the back seat, try’s to climb in the front, barks at dogs and people they pass.

Some bark, scratch at the windows,
jump out of it or go into a flight or fight.

It makes sense a dog would react when you take into account the visual and noise stimulations.

Some of these issues can easily be resolved by kennel when traveling. Some of the most anxious dogs I’ve worked with settle perfectly in the kennel while traveling vs free roaming in the car.

Besides the effects on a dogs psych, kenneling while traveling is super safe !

Do you kennel your dog in the car ?

As a dog trainer, dogs are literally apart of my everyday life.
Something I enjoy outside of dogs is rock climbing.

It has nothing to do with dogs and I think that’s important for me to have.
It completely clears my mind and I think of nothing else but what I’m doing in that moment, otherwise I fall. It makes me find the confidence within myself.

It clicked for me that it’s so much like building dogs up in training.
Exposing them to stress and showing them they can do it with the right encouragement.
Building their confidence so they can handle everyday stress rather than being tucked away or never experiencing stress at all.

Some people see one ounce of stress in a dog and all they want to do it pet and love all over them. That may help them in that moment but it won’t help them in the long run.
Stress is healthy and natural. Why not help teach your dog how they can better handle stress vs avoiding it all together.

Do you allow your dog on the couch?

Before I start letting my dogs on the couch, I first want to set boundaries.

1-You’re allowed if you ask but not every time
2-You’re allowed but know “off” means off

You can chose to let your dog on the couch on their terms or not at all.
I like for my dogs to respect my personal space just as I respect theirs. I don’t invade their cots/beds/kennels unless they give me inviting body language.

Is your dog allowed on the couch ?

The most underrated dog training tool ✨You ✨

We can provide clear communication with our body language, movement, voice and timing.

Our body language speaks clearly to dogs about our presence. It can give good intentions or threatening ones.

Our movement can be used to create excitement to bring a dog up or to slow their body and minds down.

Our voice-whether it’s a command or marker-can provide the dog with understanding if they’re doing right or wrong. And I'm sure everyone with a dog have noticed tone matters.

Our timing can be the difference in if a dog repeats a behavior in the future or not.
I am definitely one to use tools to make communication and handling easier for a dog but at the of the day I make sure I’m able to accomplish those things with just me and myself.

We are the greatest tool we can provide our dogs for communication. It’s just matters if we know how to use it.

How do you utilize yourself in your dog’s training?

Does you dog only sit if you give a hand signal ? Here’s why.

Most likely when your dog was taught how to sit they were encouraged by holding up a piece of food followed by a “Sit..Sit..No Buddy Sit..”

Your dog remembered that “picture” of your hand and that yummy piece of food for sitting. And since dogs are better visual learners vs verbal learners, the visual cue stuck while the verbal cue-not so much.

The key to having your dog fully understand your verbal command is saying sit first THEN follow with your hand signal. Practice a couple reps, then slowly try without your hand. Give them a moment to think. If they need a little help, give them the hand signal. And be sure to say “No” before repeating sit so you’re communicating clearly.

Save this post to try with your dog struggling with a verbal command !

✨Here’s one big reason your dog may be having behavioral issues.✨

Lack of fulfillment.
Throwing the ball for 15-20 minutes a day for our dogs sounds like it would work but in reality that can get boring pretty fast. It also doesn’t give much mental stimulation (aka it’s the same thing over and over again).
For some dogs, they require A LOT more mental and physical stimulation.
So what exactly is fulfillment for a dog? A good starting point is to think about what dogs LIKE to do. They like to sniff, run, swim, hunt and roll around in the grass, you know dog things. They use their senses and brain to do all of these things.
So how can you fulfill your dog more?
A trip to the park to experience different smells, noises and visuals is a good start.
A structured walk around the neighborhood to help with mental stimulation followed by a fun game of tug is another.
Spread their kibble in the backyard grass to forge vs feeding in their bowl.
A training session to touch up on obedience or teach a new trick.
Keep in mind that considering your dog’s breed is helpful (a Lab likes to retrieve, a Pitbull likes to play tug, a heeler likes to chase prey (hello flirt pole)) Each dog is an individual so think about what activities your dog enjoys and try new things.
Interacting with your dog during these activities will make fulfillment fun for you and even more rewarding to your dog.
So when your dog is misbehaving or being difficult think “How have I helped fulfill my dog today?”
👆Like this post if you’re interested in more tips about fulfillment.

Meet Baylor. A 14 year old that recently moved into a new apartment with his family and trying to get the hang of using potty pads.

While Baylor has some mild health issues that may be contributing to not making it to the pad advice can go a long way. It goes to show that dog training isn’t just about helping dogs it’s about helping owners.

This past weekend a client contacted me in a panic. Her dog was attacked by another dog. My client was walking around their apartment complex and the other owner lost control of their dog. It ran and attacked my client’s dog.

So this is for the owners that struggle controlling or leash walking your dog. Please find help.
Find a trainer or enroll in an online course.

Your dog becomes a danger to society.
Regardless of size or breed every dog has teeth that bite. Regardless if they don’t go after a person or dog they can run into traffic causing an accident.

We owe it to our dogs to show them how to live in our world. 🐾 🤍

My client and her dog Rosie are in good health. They are keeping Rosie’s mind occupied with enrichment.
