Happy Thursday everyone!
I've considered making this post for a while and had some time today so wanted to give everyone a glimpse into our price points and why these little bunnies can cost as much as they do! I say a glimpse...it's a long post, but it's just the tip of the iceberg. π
We start with housing. It can cost anywhere from hundreds to thousands to create enough space for breeding stock and their offspring. We like to make sure everyone has a comfortable amount of space and that our mama rabbits have enough room to raise healthy, happy babies.
Next is breeding stock. It is the most important investment in the rabbitry. These rabbits can cost upwards of $600 per animal, particularly in dwarfs. These typically come from breeders who have spent decades perfecting their lines.
Now we have housing and stock, time to think about supplies. Rest mats, toys, bowls, bottles, hay, shavings, hundreds of pounds of feed per week, nest boxes, first aid, supplements, heating and cooling, etc. These are all continuous expenses.
Finally, we come to producing. Whoever came up with the phrase "breed like rabbits," likely did not have rabbits. Our specialty is dwarfs, and unlike large commercial breeds like the New Zealand, dwarfs only have a couple babies at a time. Netherlands average 2-3 viable kits per litter and Hollands average about 4-5. This only happens a few times a year if we're lucky.
While we thoroughly enjoy what we do, it is a great deal of work. We hope this gives everyone a little more insight into the effort we put into our animals and why they are priced the way they are. Despite their initial cost- they are very inexpensive pets compared to most others, and the cutest by far! π°
