It's Moments Monday, where we share moments in h**petological history. Today's photo is a fully restored 1927 photograph of
Grace Olive Wiley (1883–1948).

Grace Olive Wiley, once fearful of snakes, transformed into the celebrated "Snake Woman" due to a fateful encounter with a rattlesnake while working at the Minneapolis Museum of Natural History in the 1920s. The story goes a rattlesnake gently crawled across Grace’s foot, and suddenly her thoughts changed from fear to wanting to understand these animals. Convinced that snakes could be tamed with patience and gentle acclimation to touch, she became the first person to breed rattlesnakes in captivity successfully. Her handling methods at the Minneapolis Museum of Natural History led to conflicts with museum administrators, prompting her departure to the Brookfield Zoo outside Chicago, where Wiley was a pioneer in naturalistic reptile displays. Subsequently, in 1937, she established a private reptile zoo in Long Beach, California, and provided snakes for classic films like “Moon Over Burma”, “The Jungle Book”, and several of the “Tarzan” feature films in the 1940s. In 1948, she was fatally bitten by an Indian cobra while handling it for a photograph. Her legacy lives on through the naming of Grace Park in Long Beach in her honor.

Great weekend unveiling "Chuck's Loop" with Oklahoma Biological Survey!

"Chuck's Loop" is a woodland loop trail dedicated to our very own Dr. Charles "Chuck" Carpenter.

Chuck was a pioneering h**petologist who spent much time in Oliver’s Woods, beginning his first research there in 1953, a three-year marking project on box turtles (Terrapene), while teaching at OU. The trail is managed by the Oklahoma Biological Survey.

Joe Grzybowski was first introduced to reptiles and amphibians while working on his h**petology merit badge as a Boy Scout. Since then, he's captured many experiences by photograph, including the moment a plains spadefoot tadpole morphed into a toad. "This toad literally took a full tail longer than its body length and reduced it to a stub in about half an hour as it emerged." Nature is mind-blowing! 🤯 🐸

This is a special weekend for our family. On Saturday, the University of Oklahoma Biological Survey will be dedicating the new loop trail at Oliver’s Woods in the memory of h**petologist Dr. Charles Carpenter. Charles, Doc, or Papa Chuck as I affectionately called my grandpa, used to spend many afternoons in Oliver’s Woods amongst the box turtles, snakes, and other h**ps that call the woods home. "Chuck's Loop” will be the new name. -Andy
