Let’s talk food!
The best food source for an axolotl is ….
WORMS! 🪱
Yep that’s right earthworms! Yes there are other things axolotls can eat but the best choice is earthworms! Typically nightcrawlers are used. Here at Sota’lotls we have used Canadian nightcrawlers and European nightcrawlers. We keep a farm of earthworms that we just replace the population as needed. Another option is red wrigglers but they can taste kinda sour to some axolotl and they might reject them. Sometimes if red with wrigglers are blanched this will prevent rejection but best option is nightcrawlers.
Worm farming is fairly easy to maintain! We tend to save eggshells and blend them to small chunks and save strawberry top, lettuce and bananas in a gallon bag in the freezer! We feed our worms as needed! I plan to make a separate post on how to make your warm bin at home so you don’t have to keep em in your fridge and go to the pet store as often!
Worms ain’t your thing another popular food is axolotl sinking pellets. We personally haven’t used this method just because worms are cheaper and easy to find in a state of 10,000 lakes. The important thing is to do your research when buying sinking pellets to make sure your axolotl is getting all the nutrients it needs!
Some other snack/treat options can be cherry shrimp, blood worms, brine shrimp, black worms and many other things. We have done most of these and the axos always love a good treat on special occasions! Just make sure to do your research and quarantine any new aquatic creatures to prevent illness. Another key thing to consider is that is will it potentially hurt my axolotl by nipping at its gills or having an exoskeleton that my axo can’t digest.
Where we get our worms is important to make sure they don’t make your axolotl sick. We have bought from uncle Jim’s worm farm off Amazon and from our local pet store. Make sure you check your worms from the pet store we have accidentally got a bad container and didn’t know til we got home.
