Thank you for visiting my page- Valkyrie Eventing is named after my absolute favorite mare of all time, Little Valkyrie, who I competed with for over 10 years. I am Claudia Romeo and I have over 20 years experience working with a wide variety of horses and have competed through the Preliminary level of eventing. I particularly love working with Thoroughbreds directly from the track as they transit

ion to their next careers but have a soft spot for any horse willing to show up for work every day. As a graduate H-A of the USPC I am comfortable teaching students of a variety of experience levels and has a strong emphasis on classically correct position. I have also worked as a veterinary technician with board certified veterinarians and therefore bring a horse-centered approach to training that considers all factors of a horse's care and wellbeing. I only take on a few clients at a time to ensure that each horse and rider can get the attention that they deserve.

Once again Fi stepped up to the plate today at the equine affaire. The arena was tiny, the footing was hard, and the bleachers were at maximum capacity. While some of the others struggled in the atmosphere, Fi was cool as a cucumber for our lesson with Phillip Dutton. She got a little tired at the end but what a good sport she is and boy has she earned a vacation. Thanks Dana for the video!!

One percent improvement every day is 100% improvement in 100 days. We are far from perfect but Fi has worked so incredibly hard to meet my demands and I am so excited to continue to develop this horse because she tries so hard. Now onto the fun part!

Fi felt great on her final jump school before heading to MD for the long format three day event! Getting here has been a huge effort on the part of my farrier (love you Carrie) and Dr. Shawn Morrell at Rood and Riddle because the wet weather wreaked havoc on her feet. Hopefully we keep it together another week and a half!!

Meet Ty- the horse everyone wants in their barn! He is a 16.2, 6yo QH/Belgian gelding who loves fox hunting and has extensive trail riding experience. He is sweet, safe, and a pleasure to have in the barn. While this guy does not have a buck or rear and very little spook his is forward! He is exceptionally rateable and hunts first flight in a snaffle but he has a beautiful way of going and loves to move out. Excellent with hounds, loads on the trailer, stands to be mounted in the field. Could lead the field (has done so for hound exercise) or possibly be huntsman/staff horse with more conditioning. As his strength increases I have no doubt he will make a handy event horse as well- has a lovely balanced canter for such a big guy. Located just south of Albany NY.

EDIT: kindly PM me, I have been slammed with inquiries and not sure I’m seeing all the comments

Libelle. 7yo KWPN mare, 16hh. Belle is everything you’re looking for in your next heart horse. Sweet, level headed, athletic, sturdy, and smart- this is one special lady. The same off property as she is at home, hacks out alone or in company, not spooky, can live out 24/7. Shes going to have one hell of a future in eventing or jumpers, even dressage but she LOVES to jump. Has some competition experience. Excellent ground manners, loads right on the trailer. Overall, I am very sad to have to move this one on but have to pay the bills somehow!! Send her south this winter (or keep her in training with me 😉) and win all your HTs next year. Kind enough for a good riding amateur or junior to develop but not a packer at this time. PM for more details. Located near Albany NY, recent clean PPE with x-rays in hand.

What a weekend! Ty went hunting again yesterday and we had a nice cracking day then Belle had a lesson with Tim Bourke where we both came away with some valuable lessons. Today the B-Team (Briggs and Belle) braved the mud for a fabulous turn around the old Chatham hunter pace. This was a great venue for Belle to sort out the galloping and jumping thing- which she did with ease! Now a nap is in order.

We didn’t quite get the result we wanted this weekend at GMHA but it was a great learning experience all around. Dressage day was cold and windy which resulted in a little bit of a spicy mare but we had some really lovely moments. She show jumped like an absolute power house and loved that but got a little overwhelmed with all there was to look at on XC. Ditch, bank, and water all no issue but all she needs is a bit more confidence jumping at a faster pace. Overall it was a tough first show as an away show but belle was super well behaved and dealt very well! Proud of her!

This lady is teaching me far more than I’m teaching her. Working with Mark and katrin and listening to people like Amy Skinner have opened my eyes to how miserable most of our horses are and that with clear rules and understanding their language we can take away so much of the anxiety that is rampant in todays show horses. I’m aiming to have the most chill partner at the horse show and so far, it’s working. She stands to be mounted, walks (mostly) without pulling, gets right on the trailer, and knows to give to pressure. How many upper level horses can say the same?

A note about training rides. I often get asked to come out and have a sit on a horse for someone who is having difficulties and more often than not I say no and refer them on to someone else. This is not out of fear although safety is an important factor, because this is my job.

By the time you get to the point of calling me, or any professional for that matter, you and your horse have likely had a bit of trouble together. You’ve built up some bad experiences and now there is some undoing to be done. Whether the emotional/physical baggage could fit in a carry-on size bag or you need an entire closet depends on many factors. For the most part, you can unpack a small bag with limited facilities and limited time. Often a horse just needs a little bit of re-explanation and a couple good rides. The issue is when the horses are experiencing systemic problems in their training and/or your relationship, and they’ve gathered an entire house full of baggage that needs to be straightened out, organized, and put back in the right place which is more often the case than the first scenario.

While I deeply appreciate the confidence it is not within my time or facility set to be able to take a horse back to where they need in order to really help them. 1-2 training rides a week while still being ridden by the owner simply is confusing to the horse and frustrating for me as I don’t feel like I can fully get to the root of the issue and make progress. The only time this type of set up works is when the horse and rider are extremely compatible and progressing well as a partnership, then a trainer is able to introduce education that will be continued by the rider.

The more you learn, the less you know, and the more I learn the more I learn to say no. If I have said no to you, it is not personal and I wish from the bottom of my heart that I could be truly helpful, but what’s best for the horse is always what is at the forefront of my mind.

Belle had an incredible XC school today, this mare is as bold and brave as she is beautiful and flashy. No doubt in my mind that she’s going to be too 5 everywhere she goes

Someone is going to get a superstar with this one. Libelle (Belle) went to her first show today and could not have been better. This mare bucks all the chestnut mare stereotypes and is the most relaxed, sweet lady. First time in a dressage ring without any drama and jumped around without issue to finish second!

Most modern horsemen, myself included, are obsessed with footing. We do trot sets on well mown paths around solid fields or even on all weather tracks, jump only on soft (but not too soft) sand, and only school dressage on perfectly flat areas. Truly, footing is one of the most important factors in our horse’s soundness but there is a time and place to learn to deal with the muck. At two horse trials this year I overheard fellow competitors at N or BN discussing with their trainer what sort of studs they should use and the advice given was “the biggest one in your box”. Now, of course safety comes first and there is a time and place to supplement your horse’s grip but at these lower levels it is the perfect time to learn to ride on adverse footing. It never even occurred to me to put studs on that day- I knew my horse would dig well into the mature turf, no matter how much water, without sliding and studs could even be needless stress on the legs since the speeds required are so slow. Spending some time in the hunt field recently has made me so appreciative of the skills it demands from the horses and riders to navigate all kinds of terrain- often at speed. Not everyone has access to hunting but there’s something to be said about learning to ride like hell through the mud and keep your horse upright.

A little sales horse update. This week we welcomed Ty- he’s a chestnut draft cross gelding with tons of trail miles that is going to get out hunting soon! Belle, the Dutch mare, is getting some more miles over fences and is proving to be a stellar and bold jumper. She will be at the ENYDCTA schooling show next weekend if you’d like to watch her go!

What a weekend. There’s something special about going to a horse trials where I’ll be able to track my progress each year, hopefully until the point we’re galloping through those blue numbers. We had a blast at Millbrook Horse Trials and Fi was a star- she’s coming into her own at an astounding pace.

07/27/2023

Did I have to redo my braids in 5 minutes because Fi rubbed them out and did I get a little lost and confused in my test? Yes to both. But what I also had was a rideable and relaxed test in a big environment on a horse who was still spooking at the letters not too long ago. So proud of this girly and excited for the rest of the weekend!!

Fi was meant to go to the 5yo Young Event Horse qualifier in NJ this week but my gut was telling me she wasn’t ready. The test has lengthenings in the trot and canter which can be a hot mess for a horse who already wants to get flat and tense so I decided that it would not be in her best interest to go. Going to the championships had been a huge goal of mine for the year, it would be great exposure for both of us to get to compete there, but young horses make their own timelines and realistically her ability to remain relaxed and accurate in the dressage ring will be more of an indicator of future success than trying to hurry anything along now. So, we went to a very fun day at Town Hill where she stayed relaxed in the dressage and jumped like a pro in the other phases. I am very excited to get my lovely girl out at millbrook this week!!

SALE PENDING

Max! 12yo 15.2 draft cross gelding, amazing personality, will be a 10/10 eventer and fox hunter. Scoop him up now and have a blast the rest of the summer! This guy is a 4WD trail horse extraordinaire, has a decent motor but is safe safe safe. Not scared of any cross country jumps, loves the hounds, great hacking alone or in company, exceptional ground manners, trailers, good for vet/farrier, huge solid feet. He is still learning in the arena but is an attentive and trainable horse- would be easy for a junior or adult amateur to bring along. Low 5’s to increase with training and life experience. Located in North Chatham NY

I already have a lot of interest in this cutie and I haven’t even posted him yet! Meet Max, let me know if you’d like to set up a time to meet him, he’s a trail horse extraordinaire and learning to be a hunt horse. 12yo, awesome ground manners, gets right on the trailer, best friend material.

Improvement can be hard to observe on a day to day basis but KD Dressage & Sport Horses LLC likes to remind me that if you have 1% change every ride that you’ll have 100% change in 100 rides. Watching the way Fi moved this morning I saw just how much has evolved in how she uses her body and got a glimpse of the walk/trot transitions she is capable of.
