Lots of people hear me talk about the importance of nutrition (this is Johnna—owner of Fetch RI and Clinical Pet Nutritionist)—but equally important is letting your dog breathe fresh air and exercise their bodies out in nature. Nutrition is only one part of the health puzzle.

Recent studies have shown that dogs that played (and humans, too) in the dirt in their early life—have a stronger immune system and those that regularly play outside have a more diverse gut microbiome. This not only helps to minimize histamine responses (which means it reduces the potential for allergies!) but it also means that your innate immune system (70% of which resides in our gut) is stronger. Even better—there is now a known link between the gut microbiome and serotonin production. Which means if your pup (or you for that matter) have bouts of depression and/or behavioral issues—working on diversifying your guts’ microbiota can help! 🦠

So long story short—take care of yourself and GET OUTSIDE!
