How to Get Your Cat to Stop Scratching Your Furniture

Do you know the horror of seeing your cat turn the arms of your favorite comfy chair into ribbons? We feel your pain. We also know why cats scratch—and how to redirect their behavior to good places.

Why Do Cats Scratch?
Cats love to mark their territory, and that’s exactly what your home is for them. Every swipe of your cat’s nails leaves behind scratch marks and pheromones from the scent glands in their paws that will let any feline visitors know exactly whose turf this is—you know, just in case you start letting neighborhood cats tour your living room.
Scratching is also good for cats’ physical health! We’re going to show you how to stop cats from scratching furniture by working with their natural instincts.

How to Manage Cats’ Scratching
The key is to encourage your cat to scratch on scratching posts and other human-approved locations (i.e. not your couch).

Get them a variety of scratching posts and cat trees—try upright and flat posts and an assortment of materials including rope, cardboard, and wood. Place posts near (or even blocking) their current favorite scratching spots. Place other posts by their favorite spots to hang out—by the litter box, next to your usual spot on the couch, or by their go-to nap spot for a good stretch when they wake up. Make the posts tempting by rubbing them with catnip and decking them out with your cat’s favorite toys.

It’s important to note that we DON’T recommend yelling at, scaring, or spraying your cat when they scratch. Remove or block their usual scratching surfaces wherever possible. For instance, if they scratch your speakers, turn them to the wall temporarily. Cover the scratched areas in an unpleasant texture like double-sided sticky tape or tin foil. If it doesn’t feel good to scratch, they won’t scratch it.

Black cats have a spooky reputation (and if you’re looking for a witchy companion, we’re not judging), but these not-so-scary cats have a rich history. Here are some of our favorite black cat facts!🐈‍⬛

#1: There are 22 Breeds of Black Cat
There isn’t just one type of black cat! The Cat Fanciers’ Association recognizes 22 different breeds that can have a solid black coat.

#2: A Black Cat’s Genes Are Powerful!
When you look at feline genetics, black is the most dominant fur color. That means if a pair of mating cats have even one recessive gene for black fur between them, they’re destined to have babies with black fur.

#3: Black Cats Are More Likely to Have Yellow Eyes
The same genes that give black cats all the melanin in their fur also gives their eyes their signature amber hue. While yellow eyes are by far the most common for black kitties, there are exceptions to the rule!

#4: Black Cats’ Fur Can Change Color
If your black kitty sunbathes like it’s an Olympic sport, you might actually see their fur color change over time! Sunshine breaks down the pigment in their fur, revealing rusty orange tabby stripes.

#5: Their Unlucky Reputation Comes From the Middle Ages
These cats weren’t always considered bad luck! On the contrary, many cultures thought they were powerful, including the ancient Egyptians who adored them as pets and gods.

#6: Many Cultures Believe Black Cats Are Lucky
A large part of the world has thankfully moved past the superstitions of the past and instead believe that black cats bring good luck! They’re also said to make people lucky in love.

Today, these cats are getting more love than ever before. They have two holidays all their own: National Black Cat Appreciation Day on August 17th and National Black Cat Day on October 27th.

Should You Introduce Your Dog to the Pool?🤔
Okay, first things first: is it ok to let your dog swim in your pool? The short answer is yes, as long as you’re careful.😉

Before you do anything, consider if your dog wants to be in the water. Next, think about how your dog could affect your pool. As much as we love our dogs, the simple truth is that they’re much messier than (most) humans! If you’re prepared to spend some extra time with the pool skimmer and your pooch is ready to dip their toes in the water, it’s time to teach your dog to swim!🥳

How to Teach Your Dog to Swim in a Pool🫡
Start small. The goal is to get your dog comfortable standing in the shallowest point of your pool, which is typically the top step of the stairs.🫣
One step at a time—literally. Once your dog is comfortable on the top step, encourage them to hop down to the next step, and the next, and so on.
Introduce the doggy paddle. As your dog reaches the limits of how deep their paws can reach, encourage them to go a little farther—which means they’ve gotta swim.😌
Teach them all the pool exits. Once they’re paddling comfortably, it’s time to teach them how to get out.👍
Practice, practice, practice! Keep enjoying pool time in short sessions, repeat the training you’ve already done.🫶

Strike scooping the litter box off your to-do list. With the ScoopFree Self-Cleaning Litter Box, there’s no scooping, cleaning or refilling your cat’s litter box for weeks. It uses crystal litter which provides 5 times better odor control than traditional clumping litter.

Crystal litter absorbs urine and dehydrates solid waste. This low-tracking litter also helps keep your floors clean because it is 99% dust free and doesn’t stick to your cat’s paws. Safety sensors ensure that the scooping cycle only occurs when your cat is out of the box. It uses disposable trays that have a plastic lining to help protect against leaking, and each tray comes with a lid for quick and easy disposal. Just remove the tray and throw it away.

There’s even a health counter that tracks how many times your furry feline uses the box, which is a convenient way to detect early signs of a health issue. PetSafe brand is here to help you and your pet live happy together.

Beach Safety Tips for Dogs❤️🐶
There are, of course, safety considerations before you soak up the sun with your fur baby.🙃

Dogs and Water Safety
It’s best to keep dogs in low and calm waters for their safety. Even dogs who can swim can grow tired in the water. Whether or not your dog can paddle, invest in a doggie life jacket if the two of you plan to splash around in the water.😌

If you're in the water, stay in a quiet area where there’s not too much boating, jet skiing, or other activities that might scare your pup.🫡

Don't forget the SPF! Any hairless, pink areas on a dog's body (like paws!) will be especially vulnerable to sunburn.👍

Also be aware of hot sand since dog paws are sensitive to heat. If it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for your canine BFF. To keep you and your dog cool, set your chair up in a shady area or carry along an umbrella.🙂

Signs of Overheating in Dogs
Signs that your dog might be overheated include increased panting and drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, and excessive lethargy.🤧

Keep Your Dog Hydrated
Drinking salt water can make your dog dehydrated. Bring along cool, fresh water and a doggy bowl so that your dog doesn’t look for water elsewhere.😨

After a fun beach day, wash your dog off with fresh water to remove salt, sand, bugs, microorganisms, and debris from their fur and skin.🤗

Cat Marking Territory: Why Do Cats Rub Their Teeth on You🫣

One typical feline behavior is teeth rubbing. What exactly does it mean when your cat rubs their teeth onto you?🤔

How Do Cats Mark Their Territory?🧐
Cats have scent glands all over their bodies, including in their cheeks, mouths, tails, foreheads, and paw pads. Rubbing these parts of their bodies onto someone or something allows them to deposit their scents with pheromones.🐱

Why Do Cats Rub Their Teeth on You?💁🏽‍♀️
They want to greet you and show affection: When cats greet each other, they rub their faces to exchange scents. When you cuddle with your kitties, they may also rub their gums onto you — this is their way of showing affection. Cats spread their pheromones onto you to mark you as their human, so play along with it like a cool cat!😺
They feel a little overstimulated: If you find your fur babies gently nibbling on you with their teeth after you pet them for some time, it may be a sign that they’re overstimulated.😿
They may have dental issues: Dental issues are common in older cats, so cats sometimes rub their teeth or gums on you when they feel sensitivity or pain in their mouths.🙀
They’re making their presence known: Just as cats try to douse you with their scent to mark you as their territory, they do this to objects, too.😼
They feel anxious: Cats often rub the corner of their mouths onto objects when they're anxious.
They’re curious: Cats are curious creatures! They occasionally rub their teeth onto objects to scope out a new environment.🫶

How To Potty Train A Dog Or Puppy?🤔

Taking them out every two hours is a safe bet, and helps to establish a healthy pattern. Be sure to also take them out as soon as they wake up, after eating/drinking, and during or after play.🐶

Familiarity is key! Bring your dog to the same spot on a leash, every time they need to relieve themselves.🐕

Many canines are very treat motivated! Try rewarding them with playtime, a walk, and/or a treat every time they relieve themselves outside to encourage good behavior!👍

If you feed your pup on a schedule, they’ll begin to use the bathroom on a schedule.🙃

Just like humans, if a dog drinks water before bed, it’s more likely that they’ll need to use the bathroom during the night.😌

Put a p*e pad in one consistent place - near the door is best - and if your pup starts to relieve themselves in the house, move them to the pad.🐩

Watch for these signals, and act accordingly: Circling, Sniffing/licking groin area, Sniffing around the home, Antsy behavior, Whining, Pawing at the door.✅

Pay attention to what your new furry friend is telling you, stick to a schedule, and reward good behavior with an I and love and youtreat and we’re sure that you and your pup will be potty trained in no time!❤️

How to Calm a Dog During a Storm?🧐

Dog parents know when their furbaby is anxious: whining, pacing, panting, chewing, and clawing are telltale signs of a pup who's feeling nervous and out of sorts. One common trigger for dog anxiety is a thunderstorm.😥

If your pup gets scared of thunderstorms, know that they're not alone, as this fear impacts up to 30% of dogs.😓

Can Dogs Sense Storms?🤔
Dogs are sensitive creatures, so they can sense storms pretty early on, too. When a storm approaches, the air changes and dog noses can detect this change. Their sensitive ears can detect changes in air pressure, too.🫣

How to Calm a Dog During a Storm?🥺
✅During a storm, what you can do is remain a calm, grounded presence for your doggo. Speak in a playful, pleasant tone, and distract your pup by playing with them — a game of tug or catch can definitely keep their minds off of the scary storm.

✅Do offer your dog a safe indoor place during storms — this can be anything from a closet to their crate. Create designated calm spots with comfy bedding to help your pup rest and relax.

✅Can You Give Anything to Your Dog for Storm Anxiety?
Some dog parents have found that thunder jackets and soothing noises, either from music or the TV, can help calm their pup. If your dog is very anxious, consult your veterinarian to see if it's appropriate for your pup to take any medication.

This week, we’re getting down to the brass tacks of what leash reactivity is and how to handle it.

What is Leash Reactivity?🧐
Leash reactivity is when a dog reacts in an unwanted manner toward a given stimulus (ex. other dogs, cars, people, loud noises) when on a leash.🐕

The most common leash reactive behaviors include: Barking, Growling, Lunging, Biting/nipping, Whining🐶

Here are some simple leash reactivity training steps, that owners can take to mitigate bad behavior:🙃

Determine the cause of the behavior: Frustration, Fear, Conflict-Seeking.🐩

Prevent leash reactive behaviors:
✅Don’t let your dog meet other dogs while on a leash. Avoid retractable leashes. Avoid corrective collars. Practice on leash indoors. Begin by associating a word like “yes” with positive behavior. When you see a trigger or stimuli approaching, keep a good amount of distance.

✅If, after a few months of taking these steps, your furry friend is still exhibiting signs of leash reactivity, it may be time to call in a professional. Most importantly: if a dog makes you or someone else feel like they’re in danger, we encourage you to seek help from a trainer ASAP.

Cats are curious creatures with many quirky behaviors. One phenomenon that kitty parents may know all too well is a cat on a counter. Wondering how to get your fearless feline off the counter? Keep reading!😇

Why Do Cats Jump on the Counter?🧐
Your cool cat might climb onto the countertop because they like heights and feel curious about everything in the kitchen. If they're thirsty, they may be drawn to your running faucet. And of course, they're likely interested in the food itself — alluring aromas of chicken, fish, and other delicacies will definitely pique their curiosity.🤪

How to Stop a Cat From Jumping on the Counter?🤓
Stopping your cat from climbing onto the countertop might take trial and error. Here are ideas that may work purrfectly with your kitty.🙃

✅Place double-sided tape on the edge of your counter.
✅Leave crinkled aluminum foil on your counter.
✅Place a plastic carpet runner on your counter.
✅Clean crumbs or spills from your counter so that your cat won't look for anything on it!
✅Install climbing trees and cat towers. Mounted wall shelves are also great cat hang-outs.
