So, what is a chutney??
Chutney is a sweet and savory condiment or spread that originated in India and is made by slow-cooking chopped fruits or vegetables with spices and vinegar. The word chutney comes from the Hindi word chaṭnī, which means “to lick” or “to eat with appetite”. Chutney can be served fresh or preserved and has a softer texture and longer cooking time than similar condiments like relish.
Here at Howling birch we cook all our chutneys for about 3hrs of cooking times. Never using pectin or other agents to thicken them. That is the difference between our chutneys and jams.
Pictured below is our pickled relish chutney. It has cucumbers and green bell peppers that are slowly cooked to extract the best flavored from each vegetable.
