Dogs learn - even when we don’t want them to! 🐾

Thankfully, dogs can learn quickly through practice & repetition. Unfortunately, that is also true when they practice behaviors we don’t like, like barking out the window, digging holes, or peeing in the house.

In conjunction with training &/or behavior modification, management can dramatically affect the success of any behavior or training plan. Dogs often simply don’t know that we expect them to act a certain way. If we are not going to be present to guide them in a specific situation, then we should work to prevent that situation from happening. For example, if we are going to be gone for the day, crating a dog instead of letting them have access to bark at the front window will prevent them from practicing that behavior when we are not around. Setting our dogs up for success is key! ✨

The Helpful Hound training tip: Help your dog make good choices! 🐕✨
. .

If we’re going to expect our dogs to behave a certain way, we have to take the time to ensure they understand what we want. A key to their understanding is consistency, & the only way to make sure our dogs practice consistent behavior is to be present when it could be happening. If we’re not there to guide our dogs, it’s not fair to expect them to know what to do.

For example, if you don’t like your dogs barking at the front window but you allow them to do it when you’re not around, then you’re allowing them to practice that behavior. To then expect them to not do it on your command could be setting them up to fail. We want to make sure we set our dogs up for success in our homes! 🐾☯️✨

Mindful Monday ☯️ Be mindful that dogs read our body language, too!
. .

One way to promote positive experiences with our dogs is to always be mindful of what we are doing with our bodies. For example, a friendly way dogs greet each other is to their sides, so approaching the dog by turning away from them is less intimidating for them.

Another example is that our dogs are aware of the direction we appear to be moving when we walk. So, when walking your dog you should point your hips and feet in the direction you want your dog to be walking. If your dog is reacting to something on a walk, instead of facing that thing with your dog, you could try continuing on your walk as if the distraction doesn’t exist.

Another thing to be mindful of with our bodies is how intimidating it may be for a dog when we lean over top of them. Instead of reaching or leaning over the top of their body, if you want to pet them, pet them on the side you are on to make them more comfortable.

These things are even more important to be aware of when a dog is meeting you for the first time or doesn’t know you very well.

Body language is important to dogs, too! 🐕✨🐾

Fun Fact Friday 🐕 Did you know that scent is as important to a dog as sight is to a human? 🐾
. .

Dogs can sense smell easily because they have a much more powerful olfactory system than humans. According to the American Kennel Club, canine noses have more than 200 million smell receptors, compared to a human’s five million! Some researchers even believe dogs can tell the time of day based on the odors in the air! 👃🏼🐕🐾

Welcome to The Holistic Hound Training Co.! We wanted to do a post that highlights what we are about & what we offer! ☯️🐾✨
. .

When it comes to dog training, we have found that there is no one-size-fits-all approach. Each & every dog we have worked with has been unique in their own ways & has their own individual needs. Because of this, we are not offering packages. Instead, dog training at The Holistic Hound is completely tailored to your dog’s unique needs! 🐾

After a *free* phone consultation with Joe, our head trainer, we do a $50 in-person evaluation. During this evaluation, we get to meet you & your dog, collect information, & determine your goals for training. From there, your $50 includes the development of what we call a “Pup Improvement Plan” (or a PIP!), where your dog’s training plan is laid out, goals are set, & the number of training sessions are agreed upon at a flat rate of $50 an hour. Joe goes over all of this in detail with you to make sure both you & your pup are comfortable!

Training sessions will look different based on your dog’s needs. Joe can meet you in your home or in a public place, depending on your goals for your dog. Your dog’s progress will be communicated to you on a regular basis so you are aware on how they’re doing & if any changes need to be made. We are here to make both you & your dog more comfortable, & our main goal is to strengthen your bond & set you both up for success for a long, happy life together ☯️✨💕🐕

Think About It Thursday: How uncomfortable would it be for a stranger to come touch you without your permission? 💭
. .

Although unintentional, we may be handling our dogs in ways that make them uncomfortable. There’s often an expectation that dogs should be able to tolerate any amount of attention from anyone at any time. When we handle our dogs in ways that make them uncomfortable, it teaches them not to trust us. This lack of trust can make it difficult to communicate with your dog during training.

When appropriate, look for consent when petting or giving affection. Consent can look like a dog leaning in, nudging your hand, or looking physically relaxed when touched or approached. If they are uncomfortable, not everyone they meet needs to pet them. Advocate for your dog! Noticing & learning your dog’s body language will help you know them better & help strengthen your bond! ☯️✨🐾
