Also consider a dogs age when choosing a new companion. If you don't have a lot of time to devote to housetraining and basic obedience, consider an older dog that needs to be rehomed. There are many wonderful dogs whose owners meet unfortunate circumstances and must be rehomed.

If you love to hike, bike, swim or engage in other outdoor activites and want a companion, choose an active breed. All you'll need to do is look at the leash for an instant companion. If reading a good book is more you style choose a less active breed. You won't be as frustrated trying to find ways to burn the excess energy off.

But there are some limitations with personalities and breed characteristics. Some breeds are by nature much more active while other breeds just want to hang out and "cuddle". Think of your personality and your activites when choosing your dog.

Dogs are social animals and learn by observation and experience. They are like kids in many ways - and the old "monkey see- monkey do" fits their learning style. They enjoy engaging in the activites their owners enjoy.

Some good total body combinations: lunge w/ bicep curl; squat w/ overhead press; lunge w/ bicep curl then stand up w/ overhead press; side lunge w/ overhead press

Flexing and extending your back with the "cat stretch" can help prevent the nerves from gentting pinched, or free a nerve that's already impinged. It also lowers your risk of developing sciatica.

02/09/2011

A great was to prevent back pain is to slowly flex and extend your spine in small ranges of movement. A good exercise for this is the "cat stretch" - position yourself on your hands and knees and gently arch your lower back to the floor and ceiling.

According to the US Dept of Health children & teens should be active 60 minutes a day. This can be broken into smaller exercise periods. Unfortunately, studies show that only 8% of children 12-19 years of age are active for the 60 minutes. Parents - turn off the electronics!

A great exercise to strengthen your legs and improve balance is stand on one foot, hinge forward at the waist to touch the ground near your toe and raise your other leg straight back behind you. At first you may need to hold onto something to help with your balance

A couple great exercises that you can do anywhere and anytime - walking backward. This is a great exercise that also improves mental clarity. Or try walking on the balls of your feet with your heels raised. This is a great calf exercise.

if you sit at a desk all day a doorway stretch is a great excercise to help your posture erect. Stand in a doorway, bend your right arm at the elbow and rest your forearm against the frame, as if you were giving the doorway a "high 5" and slightly forward w your right foot. Hold for 30 sec . Reverse arms. Try to do this several times a day

To increase your vertical leap and increase running speed try some vertical squats. Hold some light dumbbells in each hand, dip your knees and leap as high as you can. Land as softly on the balls of your feet as you can, lower heels, reset your feet. Try for 5 sets of 6 leaps 2 to 3 times /week.
