****UPDATE: 1/19/2023
Thank you to everyone who’s applied or emailed with interest. There were a few applications that seem to have potential. The problem is (and it’s a good problem to have) We are noticing as Schopie heals from the trauma, everyday she’s becoming a slightly better version of herself. So, we are going very slow with processing applications in order to allow for mods time to monitor her progress. She might ultimately become a dog with different needs or a less complex needs. We HOPE this will be the case. So, we ask in love and kindness to please be patient with us if you have submitted an application. We will process it if it meets initial criteria but we will also be cognizant of Schopey’s changing needs! Applicants in CT are typically given priority. We will update accordingly and keep you all posted! Thank you and stay tuned 🙏🏼 ❤️

Hey folks, so we’ve had some success with our painfully honest posts lately 🤣 but we have a *very special* baby looking for her forever human and she’s just too sweet for sarcasm. We tried and it’s just not applicable here. Her story deserves the proper tone and context.

Schopey, a female Maltese x Sh*tshu is approaching 8 years young. But when a pup has survived such severe neglect, it can make them appear much older—as is the case with our Schopes.

BARC got her all the best vet care and over the last few weeks, she’s shown amazing signs of progress every single day. Real improvement at a very slow but steady pace. She’s physically healthy now, but cognitive issues are still present—picture someone who has PTSD and is trying to reconnect with the world around them. It’ll happen but requires a safe, loving, patient environment. There are things she will never recover from, like close to 100% blindness which is the direct result of lack of proper medical care. We believe she can recognize shadows but she relies on her heightened sense of smell—and she will touch things (like her water bowl)🥹 with her nose to figure out where it is.

Schopey is 100% deaf. So, along with being blind imagine trying to navigate a big scary world with your two most vital senses taken away. Now imagine someone dumped you on the street and you have no idea what’s happening to you, or around you. You have no place to go. You have no one caring about you. We have no idea how long she lived this way. We have no idea if anyone ever cared for her. We do know she was bred likely multiple times. So she was a money-maker for someone at some point. We had her spayed so she can put that horrid life behind her.

•We are seeking a natural caregiver, a super intuitive INCREDIBLY ATTENTIVE human who’s not only experienced with SN dogs but adores them—seeks them out because she (yes it’s usually a woman) knows that’s how she can really make an impact on the life of an animal who’s been deeply traumatized.

•We are seeking a loving healer type who has experience and maybe currently has no pets, or maybe one other very low-key dog or some low-key cats. In fact, we think Schopey might love a furry friend who wants to nap together.
…..Obviously no human kids only because we want her in a home where she is priority #1. She’s been around a few babies and is fine, she’s not interested at all. She doesn’t have an aggressive or negative cell in her body.

•We are seeking someone who will be perfectly okay with an occasional accident in the house. She aims for the pee-pee pad but can sometimes miss 🤷 She may or may not improve with a regulated bathroom routine/going outside only. We need someone who’s okay with this reality. No sugar coating. Surely there’s worse things in the world.

•We are seeking someone who’s naturally in tune with body language, energy, and small signals as Schopey cannot communicate her needs like a typical dog.

•We are seeking someone who loves to pick up, hold, carry, and has the physical strength to lift 15-20 lbs with ease. Schopey can walk around on her own in the house but might walk into walls and objects. She’s very soft and cautious when she walks.

•We are seeking someone who loves being home and taking the day slowly—with their beloved dog 🐩 being the most important part of their daily plans. Working from home or working very part time with minimal hours away from the house.
Schopey is *fine* staying home, in a safe and contained space while you run out for a few hours but she will get up, wander and ”smell” for you until you return. She’s excellent in the car, by the way.

Schopey can walk outdoors and seems to enjoy short walks—so long as she’s being lead on a leash and she will go to the bathroom like a properly trained dog outside once she’s comfortable and knows she’s can trust you to lead her in the right direction on the leash.

Fun Fact: Schopes loves Apple 🍎 slices more than anything and like to give hugs 🫂 get the tissues omg 🥹

Bottom line, in spite of everything she’s been though and horror of such neglect, she is happy, silly, playful, gentle, and curious. 🥰 How many humans could be this resilient? Not many. Dogs like Schopey are the most incredible beings on this planet—still craving LOVE and AFFECTION even when her needs were never met. 🥹 we truly don’t deserve animals. Our world is too cruel for them.

If you are her person, if you meet all of the criteria above, please apply. Please be in CT, MASS, RI or NY but not beyond that because this is such a special case. Please do not apply if you do not fit what we are seeking as listed above.

In love and kindness, thank you for taking the time to read about our beloved girl, Schopey.

Matawan, NJ.
Just look at this precious little Shih Tzu girl. She had an extremely traumatic experience that left her eye hanging out of the socket by the muscle. It was horrendous and the picture is too graphic for us to post on face book. After emergency surgery at an after-hours emergency vet clinic, she has recovered amazingly well and is now ready for adoption in NJ. She was so strong and such a little trooper through it all.. She is the absolute sweetest little angel, extremely well behaved and house trained. You could not get a more wonderful addition to your family if you are wanting to adopt. She will need to be placed in an adult only home with possibly one small, docile dog. We do not want anything to happen to her remaining eye so we must be extra cautious in her placement/home environment. If you are interested in applying to adopt this ANGEL, please read the additional information below.

All potential adopters must fill out applications and be approved before meeting the pet they are interested in adopting. To adopt one of the precious lives that we have saved, this rescue requires an approved application, a suitable home environment, a signed adoption contract, and an adoption fee.
If approved to adopt, we expect applicants to pick up their new pets in person at the pet's foster location. Thank you for understanding that these dogs' welfare and quality of life, for the rest of their life, is our top priority and why we must be extremely diligent in their placement.

📌 To foster or if you cannot get to NYC to adopt in person, apply with rescues, please:
https://www.nycacc.org/get-involved/new-hope/nhpartners
To FOSTER, you have to be within prescribed range of NYC ACC approved New Hope rescues you are applying with, & to ADOPT you will have to be in the general NE US area; NY, NJ, CT, PA, DC, MD, DE, NH, RI, MA, VT & ME (some rescues will transport to VA) unless you can get to the shelter IN PERSON.
******** RE: ACC site *****************
Just because a dog is not on the ACC site does NOT necessarily mean safe. There are many reasons for this like a hold or an eval has not been conducted yet or the dog is rescue-only... the list goes on... Please, do share & apply to foster/adopt these pups as well until their threads are updated with their most current status. TY!
