What should you look for in a new pet sitter?
If it's your first time leaving your pet alone at home (or on your farm), finding the "perfect" pet sitter might be a challenge. How can you find someone you trust who has the capability to make good judgements, especially in the case of an emergency? How will your pet sitter fare if your pet has an accident on the carpet? These are all important questions to ask before you leave your keys under the mat and welcome a pet sitter into your home.
Here are some important things to look for when finding a pet or farm sitter:
1. A list of references or reviews. These might be from friends/neighbors who have used the pet sitter in the past, or list of people from which the sitter has worked with.
2. Clear professionalism and maturity. Is your pet sitter late to your intake appointment? Are they focused on other things, or are they listening/noting specific details about your pet's care?
3. Experience working with animals. 4-H members, shelter volunteers, and stablehands all make great candidates for pet sitting jobs. Not only will these individuals understand basic care of these animals, but also important handling and emergency care procedures as needed.
4. Affordable and flexible rates. A per pet fee may work for the sitter, but it can quickly become expensive if you have 3+ animals. A great pet sitter is able to work with you on prices and fees to assure that the rate is appropriate for the work being completed.
