Simon handling the holiday season like a champ! He used to be an absolute terror towards guests. He’s very attached to his family and tended to guard them. Now he looks meek as can be. 😁 Which is good, because he is actually super friendly.

Back in Kirkland for the holiday. Murphy and Marlow are in the capable hands of my friend and dog-sitter/walker Andy Sullivan. Andy serves customers in the Norwood area. It’s important to have trusted folks watching your dogs while you’re away. Even better is having someone stay in your home with your pups.

I’m very sad to announce that my father, Bill Connell, passed away on December 7th in Kirkland, WA. He was 73.

You may recall a post I made regarding his kidney failure last year. Earlier this year he received an additional diagnosis of cholangiocarcinoma (keywords: rare and aggressive). He fought back with chemotherapy and dialysis for as long as possible. His health and mobility declined rapidly in the past month and he was admitted to a hospice facility on 12/6.

My mom and sister kept constant watch over him. I was fortunate enough to get a flight to Seattle the morning of 12/7, spending the entire day bedside with him, my mother, and my sister. He was unable to speak with us on his final day, but we managed to communicate enough. He died peacefully at about 7:15 pm.

To my current clients:
Thank you for your patience and understanding while I attend to matters here. Lessons will be rescheduled with each of you.

To everyone:
Swipe to enjoy pics of dad with dogs throughout the years. Without this man Connell’s Dog Training would simply not exist.

I was standing in the bag-check line at the airport when I noticed a very well-behaved service dog. I thought….I think I know that dog! Turns out I was right.
Hannalore of and I got to hang out a bit before our early morning flights. Seamus was an absolute gentleman in the Delta SkyLounge.
Zoom in on the patch on his vest… 🤣

I just realized I’ve been bad about posting lately. So bad, in fact, that most of you don’t yet know Marlow’s DNA test results, which I got a couple weeks ago.
I thought for sure he’d be at least 10% demon, 20% kangaroo. Swipe for results!

Walking a pack of dogs can be a major pain. It can also be dangerous. I know when I see others with multiple dogs I give them a wide berth. Most folks have little to no control of their walks.
The key? Achieve a nice heel with each dog individually. Make sure they each have you as a priority over their interests in each other and the environment. You can’t allow them to get distracted and pull you every which way when they see/hear/smell something. You can and should release them from their heel to do so when it’s safe and convenient. But the default has to be everyone in their own lane.
I insist on order before we leave the driveway. We left the house off leash and the dogs ran about, sniffing and peeing on things. Then I called for a heel and they lined up like this. With that kind of focus, all that’s left is to leash them up and go. Prepare for stunned looks from neighbors.

Seems legit. Totally wouldn’t want Murphy to miss a paycheck. 💸😂🐶🖕

Can your reactive dog behave in the vet’s waiting room? I have yet to see a waiting area that isn’t cramped — because they need all that clinical space in the back! But there are a few things you can do:
1) leave your dog in the car until they are ready for you (engine running with climate control, obviously)
2) Talk to the staff — ask if there is a back door you can bring your dog through.
3) After you’ve established a minimum of manners and obedience, have your dog hold a stay facing you. 4) SPEAK UP when others get too close! Just say something quick and polite like “he’s going to need a bit of space.”
The vet is no place to be making friends even if your dog isn’t reactive. All the animals are stressed and edgy.

And if you need an excellent vet and are nearby, is our go-to!

The dynamic duo worked hard in the heat today for YOU and YOUR DOGS! If your dog is poorly behaved around others, these guys will fix that…

Lots of breaks for air conditioning and water, but they’re happy to do it. 😁

Well-mannered, calm dogs are not magical. While some dogs need more work than others, every dog can be made to chill out. Calmness can be cultivated. Start by teaching your dogs to “stay” or “place” and require it during times they would otherwise be irritating you.
I personally dislike hyperactivity when I’m in the kitchen. So here are my two and Olive, our current boarder, staying while I make breakfast.
Believe it or not, duration work is also beneficial to recall. Both staying and coming when called require your dog to think about their responsibility to you even when you aren’t close. And they know they’re faster than you.
Try it.
