Update on Sophie puppy: as of today she weighs 1.82 she will be 13 weeks this Monday! She has gained 5 ounces since she’s been out of hospital. She’s not eating like the other dogs and I have to hand feed her the limited items she will eat but she’s growing and gaining slowly so that’s all that matters! I’ve named her Hopper. I know it’s an odd name but it fits her perfectly! 😍

Puppy update- for those of you who have been following yesterday in the early morning hours the puppies blood glucose tanked it wasn’t even registering. She also had no interest in food and I had been bottle feeding her since we got home from hospital. Shortly after 9 a.m. I called my vet and asked them if I could bring the puppy in early (I had appointment for entire litter’s first shots scheduled at 3:30 p.m.). They said yes so I brought her in. They needed to take blood and do their own tests so I left her there in their care and I would be back with the rest of litter at 3:30. When I got back and was put in waiting room the vet walked in with puppy. I said what’s the matter with her and she said that’s a good question. All her blood work was completely normal and when they manually tested her blood glucose it was in 200’s even though the libre app on my phone was saying 70. She said that app isn’t known for being accurate all the time. She believes the puppy had hypoglycemic episode on Saturday when I brought her to hospital but hasn’t had one since.

She did say the puppy was anemic and that her red blood cell count was low and she suspects it’s from parasite the pyrantel dewormer doesn’t cover. So she gave me a different dewormer for entire litter. I gave it to all the puppies when I got home. She did drink water last night and I force fed her some nutrition paste. This morning she ate solid food on her own, nutrition paste I gave her and has been drinking water and continuing to snack on dog food. She’s running and playing like a brand new puppy! So thousands of dollars later and a different dewormer and she’s great. I have since taken the blood glucose monitor off, since it wasn’t accurate and she was trying to itch it off herself.

The funny part of all of this I actually have the dewormer the vet gave me I just have been using pyrantel instead of the fenbendazole (I have both). So I think going forward I will just use fenbendazole instead of pyrantel because it covers more parasites. I believe the puppy got the parasite from her mother or one of my other adults dogs. My adult dogs enjoy going outside and eating whatever 💩 they can find. So I have to treat all of them too. And they will no longer be going outside to free range turd hunt they will be going out 3 at a time on leashes with me.

So as of now the little puppy and her littermates are doing great! They are all playful eating proper and drinking water. So thank you everyone for your well wishes! I am so happy it was a simple issue and not life threatening congenital defect! I feel like 100 pounds has been lifted off of me! I am missing family 4th of July festivities up north caring for these puppies but I would rather that than live with the loss of this sweet little girl! 💥❤️🤍💙

Sophie’s babies celebrated their 8 week birthdays yesterday! Sadly this is how one of her little girls spent her birthday weekend. The first 2 pictures are her Friday in the a.m. the rest of the pictures are of her since Saturday a.m.

Sometimes I let puppies leave at 8 weeks and sometimes I wait longer. I am so happy I chose 10 weeks with this litter or she probably wouldn’t have survived. 😭

I dewormed all of the puppies Thursday at 7 p.m. she appeared fine Friday I didn’t notice that she had upset stomach or anything odd. Saturday I woke up at 4:30 a.m. I fed all the puppies pottied them and let them play until they got tired and fell back asleep. At that time I decided to take nap until 8 a.m. when I woke up so did all the puppies hyper and ready to play. She didn’t wake up she wanted to stay sleeping so after a few minutes I picked her up and put her on my bed so she wouldn’t get trampled by her playful siblings. At that time her eyes were glazed and I did finger test and her response was delayed. Then I tried to stand her up and she couldn’t stand. I called 3 ER’s and finally the last one took me and told me it would be 2 hour wait. They also forced me to call poison control for animals ran by the ASPCA that was a $95 phone call for 5 minutes…. The only thing she had injested was the pyrantel dewormer and poison control told me that doesn’t cause health issues. I was assigned case number for the ER to call them if needed.

During the drive there 40 minutes away she had a seizure halfway there. I called the ER and told them she had the seizure and I thought she was dying but she’s still breathing labored. Finally they took me serious and prepared for our arrival. They made us go in special door and greeted us dressed in plastic hazmat covering because they suspected parvo. Well parvo test was negative. They shaved her little legs and it took 3 of them and they could not find vein to put IV in. They ended up having to put IV in her jugular. Her blood sugar was so low she had to be hospitalized with dextrose and water IV.

Her ammonia test was negative so they didn’t suspect liver shunt. So she stayed in hospital to get stabilized. When I finally brought her home they installed blood glucose monitor that I scan and check from app on my phone. Her blood glucose cannot drop below 80. It’s been a struggle the past 2 days keeping it stabilized at home because she isn’t interested in food. I’ve actually been bottle feeding her to force calories. Well today finally she ate about 1/2 of 1 ounce of smoked salmon. I’ve been with her in my lower level since 8:30 and it’s almost 12:10. So it’s taken 3.5 hours to eat 1/2 ounce but it’s something. Please keep this little baby girl in your prayers that she makes it 🙏🏼 long story shortened we think it was hypoglycemia caused by upset tummy from the dewormer and not eating because of upset. I will be monitoring her blood glucose for 2 weeks as long as it stays stable she should be in clear. If not then we will have to do more extensive testing and ultrasound to identify what is underlying cause of the hypoglycemia 😭 as of this morning she weighs 1.3 so hopefully I can keep that stable too because she cannot afford to lose any weight.

I’ve never had a puppy get hypoglycemia that was over 2-3 days of age. Once again dog breeding is so unpredictable even happy thriving puppies can tank that quickly. Missing just 1 meal can cause this. These tiny chihuahuas are so fragile. That is why I get upset when people message me saying they want 1-2 pound adult dog. When people see my 5 pound dogs they say wow that’s the smallest dog I’ve ever seen. I don’t think people understand how small these dogs are. Photos online are deceiving. You cannot tell how tiny these dogs are in photos. Whatever I was going to make on this litter was just spent in one weekend. Chihuahuas are fragile and medical care is not cheap. This is why chihuahuas are not cheap pets. Owning these babies is a serious emotional, time consuming and financial commitment. Please keep that in mind if you are thinking of getting one or if you think spending over a thousand on a puppy is too much $. Quality well bred dogs are not cheap. Medical care is wildly expensive we spend more on our dogs medical care than we spend on ourselves knock on wood. 💔

I just want whoever is seeking a 1 pound chihuahua that A. You are crazy B. Please don’t ever own a dog. C. If this dog was real it would weigh about 1/2 of an ounce. D. Common sense is not that common! 💯

Ugh so true!!! I had 5 applications for the same dog just this past weekend. Yet when it comes time for deposit they 👻👻👻👻👻 why waste your time and mine applying! This is another reason I don’t do wait lists and do first come first serve with deposits!

I have a new owner. Her last chi died from zinc poisoning from swallowing a penny. Her chi threw up the penny but it was too late she died from zinc poisoning just like that. I have never heard of a dog dying from swallowing a penny so of course I had to google it. How shocking. Never in my life would I have thought swallowing a penny would be fatal. If my own dog swallowed a penny I probably wouldn't have called the vet at all I would have just assumed it would pass through the bowels. Absolutely heartbreaking. I am sharing this article so now you will know too 🙁
