Great advice! Get your pups meds from the vet Monday if fireworks are stressful!
Fireworks might be fun for us—but for our dogs, they can be loud, scary, and even dangerous. Here’s how to get your pup ready before the booms begin:
🌅 Start Your Morning with a Calm Sniffari
Plan a long, quiet sniff walk early in the day before the fireworks start. Let your dog stop and sniff as much as they want—sniffing is a natural stress reliever and helps them decompress.
🍗 Bring the Good Stuff
Stock up on your dog’s high-value treats (think: cheese, chicken, liver). Use them generously if fireworks go off during walks. You’re building a positive association:
Loud noise = delicious reward.
🌿 Hide Treats for Sniff Hunts
Scatter treats in the grass or yard and encourage your dog to “find it.” It’s fun, enriching, and helps burn off nervous energy.
🏃♂️ Plan for Extra Exercise
Use a long lead in the backyard for tug, flirt pole, or fetch with known cues. A physically and mentally tired dog is less reactive when the noise starts later.
🌱 Stock Up on Natural Calming Aids
If your dog isn’t on prescription meds, now’s the time to pick up natural options like L-theanine, lavender, CBD drops, Thunder Wunder H**p Chews, a Thunderjacket, or Super Snouts Chill Out H**p Actives.
👶 Special Note for Puppy Parents
Puppies under 16 weeks are in a critical socialization period. Scary experiences now can lead to lifelong fear. Go slow, stay close, and use lots of praise and treats to create calm, positive associations.
🏠 Create a Safe, Cozy Space for the Evening
✔️ Set up a comfy spot (crate or bedroom) with dim lighting
✔️ If you're heading out, close all windows, lock doors—no doggy doors left open!
✔️ Play calming music—search “Music for Dogs” on YouTube or try “Through a Dog’s Ear” on Amazon Music
✔️ Prep 3+ chews:
A lick mat with frozen peanut butter (soothing and simple)
A stuffed frozen Kong with banana, yogurt & PB (long-lasting & calming)
🐾 Don’t wait until the night of!
Prepping now means a much calmer, safer holiday for your best friend. Every year, shelters fill with dogs who panicked and escaped. Let’s keep yours safe at home, feeling loved and secure. 💙
