Animal communication brings enrichment and validation to zoo animals but some zoos don't permit animal communicators from working with the zoo animals.

I hope that changes. At least the Erie Zoo in Pennsylvania gave me permission to communicate with their animals. Thank you for your open mindedness.

You don't need to become an animal communicator to communicate with your pet. While communicators can help with the bigger challenges or help you bond more deeply with your pet, we encourage you to learn the basics of communicating with another species.

Here are 5 practices you can begin today.

1. Meditate alone or with your pet.

When you find a quiet time to go within your pet will join you. They enjoy your presence when you are calm and centered. Animals do not like "extra" drama.

2. Don't allow yourself to become distracted by your phone, computer and other devices when you're with your pets. This is the opposite of mindfulness and your electronic devices put out harmful radiation to sensitive creatures, even you. Spend less time on these devices and more time interacting with your animal companions.

3. Leaving your pets home alone for long periods of time.

Obviously, as humans we need to work. However, have a friend, relative, or professional animal sitter come in and spend time with your pets. Dogs also need that afternoon walk.

4. Share special moments with your pets.

The time you have with these special creatures flies by quickly. And then when their times comes to die, you'll regret not spending enough quality time with them. Animals have a lot of treasures to offer us but we must be willing to receive them.

5. Don't have a top-down relationship with your pet.

What I mean by this is yes, you need to set boundaries and teach your animal companion how to become socialized in your world and to interact with humans, but don't buy into that belief that humans are superior to animals.

Remember that animals are teachers and they are natural healers. They are wise and they teach us more than we will ever admit.

If you can follow these five practices you will actually be communicating with your pet--you'll be communicating love and respect. You'll spend more time listening to them instead of talking on the phone or distracting yourself where you are only half paying attention.

While I'm pleased to see people walking their dogs, most of the time, these people aren't present with the dogs. And then there are people who believe that cats are independent and don't require our attention so they can be left alone--not true.

When we spend quality time with other species, we evolve as humans. If anything, let that be your takeaway from this post.

The Pittsburgh Zoo was hit by a tornado yesterday and there were four tornadoes that touched down in Allegheny County yesterday. The animals were physically unharmed but I recorded this sound bath to bring them calm after the storm.
