Let’s talk about BMI and pregnancy. 💭 Did you know a pregnant woman’s BMI is calculated the exact same way as someone who isn’t pregnant? That means, even when you’re growing a whole new person (or two!), your body is still measured as if it’s just you.

At my last doctor’s visit, I was told I was obese based on this outdated system. But let’s break this down: BMI doesn’t account for pregnancy, fluid retention, increased blood volume, or even the natural weight gain that happens to support a growing baby. It also doesn’t differentiate between muscle, fat, or other factors that make each person unique. It’s a flawed metric, and hearing these labels during such a vulnerable time can be discouraging—and downright harmful.

For years, BMI has been criticized for oversimplifying health. In pregnancy, this is even more glaring because weight gain is normal, healthy, and necessary for both mom and baby. Here’s the truth: our bodies are designed for this. The extra weight supports your baby, your placenta, your uterus, and even your blood supply.

So, let’s stop scaring pregnant women into thinking their bodies are failing them. Instead of focusing on a number, let’s focus on nurturing, movement that feels good, and supporting each other through the incredible transformation of pregnancy. 🌸

🌸 As a postpartum doula, I’ve had the incredible privilege of caring for the sweetest, most amazing little souls. Each baby I’ve looked after has been pure magic, filling my heart and fueling my passion for this beautiful work. Now, 7 months pregnant with my own little one, I’m blaming all of those perfect babies I cared for—they made it impossible not to want this experience myself (again)! 💖 Thank you to each family and every little one who’s blessed my journey. I don’t usually share much of my personal life here, but I married my best friend this weekend!
I could not have asked for a more beautiful ceremony surrounded by more beautiful people. I am so madly in love with this man and how he has effortlessly taken on his roll as dad to our boys. Steven is everything I ever wanted in a partner and I thank the universe daily for sending him my way. Thank god we share a birthday, otherwise we may never have met ! AFTERSHOCK depicts the tragic and preventable death of Shamony Makeba Gibson who died in 2019, just died 13 days following the birth of her second child. The film picks up two months following her death, as Shamony's surviving mother, Shawnee Benton Gibson, bereaved partner, Omari Maynard, their family and community begin navigating their new normal.

Amber Rose Isaac, a 26-year-old first time mother, died due to an emergency c-section after medical providers failed to address a treatable condition that she had during her pregnancy. Within weeks of Amber's death, Omari reaches out to Amber's surviving partner, Bruce McIntyre, and a lifelong bond is formed. Together, Omari, Bruce and Shawnee begin the fight for justice for their lost loved ones while caring for the children that were left behind.

Through the film, we witness two families who become ardent activists in the maternal health space, seeking justice through legislation, medical accountability, community, and the power of art, ritual and healing. Through their collective journeys, we find ourselves on the front lines of the growing birth justice movement that is demanding systemic change within our medical system and government.
