Frankie our Yorkie poo has been doing great in his foster and still looking for a forever home. This 4 year old came from a puppy mill but isn’t as shy as the others and craves human attention. He’s working on housebreaking and leash walking and is a major cuddler. His teeth were so prematurely rotted that he had a small fracture in his jaw, but with rest (soft food and no bones) and medication it’s expected to heal. Meet Rex!
We picked this cute Yorkie mix up this morning as his owners were moving TODAY and called the local animal control to pick him up 🤯 He’s 18 months old, has NEVER been to a vet or had any shots until now, and wasn’t taken outside much. He is a little nervous and growls at first, but warms up quickly, seems ok with other dogs, and wants to be a sweet guy. We aren’t sure what he’s mixed with but he has adorable squirrel-like coloring and hair more wiry than a Yorkie. Meet Toby!
This 2 year old Yorkie was surrendered to the local pound this morning when his owner moved without him 🤷‍♀️
He was scared but ready to move on with his life to a more permanent gig where he will be included as a family member for the next 15+ years. He seems fine with other small dogs and is sweet once he feels safe, under 10lbs full grown and getting neutered and fully vetted. His owners said he’s a friendly playful dog, and only gets aggressive “if someone is trying to hit him or something” 😳

Kane had an adopter meet him last week and did great but couldn’t quite close the deal…
This 3 year old was nervous at first but has really come out of his shell and is a lovable Velcro dog. Never go to the bathroom alone again without this face staring at you like you are the center of his universe. Good with other dogs, neutered, updated on shots and ready for a forever home. We have been on a roll with getting our super seniors adopted lately, so here’s another one for all you antique collectors out there…
Gordon was “found” by someone who called animal control to pick him up, saying he was sick with diarrhea and vomiting and was 12 years old 🤔 🤨. Again, not criminal masterminds we are dealing with here, but it would have been nice if they could have at least told the truth and let them know his real name or anything about him. He was kind of a train wreck but doing MUCH better after a week in foster and some medical care. He’s eating great, no more gi issues, loves cuddling and napping in soft beds, and is fine with other chill quiet sleepy dogs. He was thin but putting on weight, some early kidney disease and a big heart murmur that is getting checked out to see if a dental will be safe. All 4 feet are covered in thick crusted infected skin that he had been chronically licking but he’s doing better after a cytopoint and some medicated foot soaks. He’s about 10lbs, a chihuahua mix, at least 12 years old, and very sweet and gentle.

Sweet senior Glenda got some disappointing medical news also… her spleen tumor was an aggressive sarcoma and her expected lifespan is months not years 😔
She’s a happy girl in her new home that loves her unconditionally and knew they wanted to bring her home without waiting for a diagnosis, and will keep her happy and spoiled as long as they possibly can.
Rescuing seniors can be a roller coaster of emotions but luckily these dogs live in the moment and don’t fear death… as long as they are comfortable, pain free, and loved they can relax and enjoy life one day at a time 💜

Our sweet senior min pin KoKo didn’t get the best medical news but it could be worse… her mammary tumors were benign, but her large tumor was a mast cell, low grade but because of how long it was allowed to grow and the location there is no way to get clean margins. She will be on medications longterm to help slow down recurrence and need to be monitored.
But the great news is she’s been adopted! Her new parents have taken in hospice dogs before and knew they wanted to give her a home regardless of her results and diagnosis 💜
Thanks to all who donated toward her life-changing surgery and to our army of senior-appreciative adopters like Koko’s new family who share our goal of making sure no senior dies homeless

Here’s another sad senior looking for a special person to take him in for whatever time he has left…
Bandit is a 10-12 year old boxer surrendered when his older owner could no longer care for him. He’s a super friendly happy guy who craves attention, gets along with people and dogs alike, and is always wagging his tail. Unfortunately his back end can’t quite keep up with his front- he has severe arthritis in his spine making his back legs very wobbly. He’s on pain meds longterm and his walking has already greatly, but he wants to bounce and run and doesn’t realize he has to slow down and remember to move his back legs so he sometimes drags them, and slippery floors are not his friend. He still gets himself up on his own and even tries to stumble clumsily up and down the stairs if we don’t stop him!
He came to us skin and bones at 37lbs and the owner said he had been losing weight and having gi issues over the last few months but he had not gone to a vet in a few years. With his condition on arrival we honestly thought his time with us would be very short and that he was in organ failure/end of life but he shockingly had pretty perfect bloodwork 🤯. He has a great appetite and is slowly but surely putting on weight, no vomiting or diarrhea on a bland diet. He’s not incontinent and still tries to be really housebroken if gotten out in time! Most of all he is a happy sweet boy who is still full of life and is determined to live every day to its fullest and make everyone fall in love with him.

Our adorable big teddy bear/muppet mix Oso hasn’t had any interest 😔. He’s really too big for us at 50lbs and we would love to get him into a home quickly before the feisty little chihuahuas and Shih tzus band together and stage a rebellion.

Oso is 9 years old and looks like a giant wire-haired doxie or a dwarf short legged doodle of some sort. Oso has been oh so friendly, oh so housebroken, and oh so adorable and while we love having him around to honk his giant squishy nose, he really wants a real home soon. He’s good with other dogs, listens and gets into a routine quickly. He was sadly surrendered locally because his owner had no place to live, and was confused at first but has opened up and loves attention and being around people, but he’s crate trained and ok alone during a work day. He’s sure to turn heads where ever he goes with his movie star quality face and disproportionately short legs.

Meet AJ!
This almost 9 year old Maltese was recently surrendered through absolutely no fault of his own and is a bit confused but sweet, fine with other dogs, and a little over 10lbs. His owner didn’t believe in vaccines so hadn’t brought him to a vet since 2017. He has some pretty awful painful ear infections that have been going on untreated for a while and we are working on getting him feeling better soon. Otherwise he seems to be in pretty good health overall and only really middle aged for a little guy, and we hope he will have another good 9 years in his new home. Sweetest senior Scrappy loves a good fluffy plush bed, and he’s found one that perfectly matches his tongue which always hangs out in various lengths!
This little old man has no teeth, the longest tongue, the brightest eyes, and the biggest heart (literally and figuratively… he’s on medication for his heart murmur). He still has some spring in his step and prances when he walks. He’s at least 12 years old, lived with a cat and has been really enjoying spending time hanging in out in the office with various other small dogs. He’s a bit anxious at first and paces and whines especially in new environments but seems more content with his doggie friends around and once he figures out a steady routine. He’s a heavy sleeper and when he naps he’s hard to wake, and we have had some scares where we had to make sure he was breathing and alive. But he always wakes up confused by our concern and poking at him to make sure he’s ok and then he’s ready for his walks or mealtimes. Scrappy isn’t getting any younger and is hoping to find a stable forever home very soon… please submit an application to meet him.

Another day, another neglected little senior surrender 😔
Meet Xander, an adorable sweet tiny frail 13 year old sheltie who has been passed around and never properly vetted. His owner moved 3 years ago and gave him to a friend, who now couldn’t keep him because the landlord’s relative who was afraid of dogs moved in. Other than passing out from his toxic horrific breath, we can’t imagine what could be scary about this 10lbs skeleton, but it’s definitely for the best that he gets to live out his life in comfort now. His bloodwork wasn’t too bad for an old guy and we are hopeful that the source of his emaciation was his painfully infected rotting teeth. He has only one tooth remaining after his years-overdue dental and should be feeling so much better!
Xander likes cats and other dogs and is a sweet quiet gentle soul looking for someone who will love and worship this wise old man in his golden years, as he should have always been. Email [email protected] to meet Xander in Northern NJ.
Almost every day we get asked to help another local medically needy senior- shelters are packed, fosters are vacationing, donations are down, and surrenders and abandonments are at their peak this time of year. We can only continue to help change one life at a time because of your support. Furby has been settling into foster and has been such a good boy! This friendly “young” 14 year old is in great shape for an old man and still has energy and loves his walks. But mostly he just wants to be with people. He’s fine with other dogs, cats, and we haven’t seen a mean bone in his body… and with no teeth left he can’t bite even if he wanted to. He still eats dry food just fine, picks up a routine quickly and is an easy good-natured guy. No high pitched yapping on this little guy, he sounds like a big old hound dog with his deep bark that doesn’t sound like it should be coming out of a 20lbs floofy dog 😆
He came to us when his owner passed away but he’s full of life and ready to start his new life.

Always wanted a lab but can’t have a big dog?
We have the dog of your dreams here, meet our “dwarf lab” Midnight!
She’s a dream dog in every way. We can’t think of anything bad to say about her. Sweet, quiet, gentle, dog-friendly, housebroken and a perfect houseguest in her foster home. Good in the car, easy to walk, and easy to love. She’s not made a sound except the soft thumping of her tail every time you walk in a room or gaze in her direction. She’s a lazy cuddly couch potato, severely obese at over 50lbs but we have her on a diet and should be more like 40lbs once she loses some weight. She’s got the short twisty doxie, corgi, or basset legs, but the personality is all lab with none of the feisty s***k or houndy baying of the other breeds in her mix. She’s 9 years old but in good health and if she continues to get down to a healthier weight she will hopefully have many years to enjoy in her new home.

Our sweet senior Glenda’s biopsies are still pending, but she has other great news to share!
She’s recovering well from her big surgery- removal of a big splenic mass, a big ovarian cyst, a decent sized mammary tumor and was up and barking and looking for food the next morning as if nothing happened 🤯
But the best news is she’s recovering in a foster to adopt home near our vet that will keep her regardless of her prognosis and love her for whatever time she has 💜. Huge thanks to her special family for opening their hearts and home to this sweetheart and loving her unconditionally. She’s making herself right at home pretty quickly and will definitely be spoiled

Kane is the cutest longest shortest little guy, a doxie body but a squishy face like a puggle 🤷‍♀️. We were told he’s Chihuahua, Maltese and Shih tzu but we haven’t done a DNA test so at this point he can be whatever you want him to be. He is 100% purely adorable though, a playful fun needy little guy. He gets nervous and loud at first with new people but once he bonds is a total Velcro dog, good with other dogs, and follows you around gazing lovingly into your eyes. If you are looking for true unconditional love, give up on human relationships and just adopt Kane! Bobby has turned into quite a mushy cuddly guy!
This 7 year old Shih tzu mix was abandoned in an apartment when his owner left the state, and was suffering for years severely matted and neglected. He’s overall a friendly guy who likes other dogs and is soaking up all the attention he can get. He’s not had great experiences with grooming in the past and needed to be sedated for his shave down and vetting so will need to be worked with gradually and probably some sleepytime drugs for that kind of stuff, and likes to be left alone when eating or chewing his bones. He’s looking for an adult home with or without other dogs, he’s fine either way, and someone who will make sure he’s never abandoned or neglected again.

We love our seniors and medical projects, but did you know we have lots of younger relatively healthy dogs up for adoption too? These little ones are all 2-5 years old, under 20lbs, and full of love and potential to live long happy lives with their adopters. Our adoption fees are $350 and under, and all dogs are spayed/neutered, updated on core vaccines, vet checked. They are all fostered in homes so we really get to know their unique personalities and needs to best match them with the right homes so that everyone is happy.

We are losing track of how many major life-changing surgeries our dogs have had this week- we certainly kept our vets at Country Willow Veterinary Hospital very busy 🤯

Check out tiny Koko’s cute new butt! Big improvement!
No we didn’t just get her a cosmetic buttlift and breast reduction surgery. This little senior had a huge heavy dangling tumor that had been growing for years and was interfering with her mobility, as well as some mammary tumors as a result of never having been spayed. She had a whole bunch of body parts removed and is adjusting to her new and better normal. Biopsies are pending and we don’t yet know if they were cancerous or not and what kind, and what her longterm prognosis is. But we are hopeful she will get to enjoy some quality time in a new home. Our little min pin is scared but warming up and likes being held and cuddled.

Thank you to all who have donated so far to support our senior dog shopping spree we have gone on this week, racking up a $10k vet bill 💵 🛒 🛍️. We think it’s worth it to change all these sweet little lives, and we thank you for agreeing with us!

Urgent ‼️ Sweet abandoned senior Glenda needs your help!

This defenseless elderly doxie mix was abandoned on a busy road and left to fend for herself. As if that wasn’t bad enough, her bloodwork on arrival yesterday showed some serious concerns and ultrasound revealed a large mass on this tiny girl’s spleen, a ticking time bomb that could rupture at any moment!
She had emergency surgery today to remove the her spleen and is resting comfortably at Country Willow Veterinary Hospital as we await her biopsy results 😬
She also had never been spayed, resulting in a large ovarian cyst and a mammary mass which may or may not be cancer. She had them removed as well, as well as her 2 remaining teeth. We don’t know longterm what her prognosis will be but we are hopeful for good news from the lab and that she will get some quality time being loved and spoiled. She’s a social cuddly little old lady, indifferent to other dogs. And she’s got the best Yoda ears and pointy toothless grin around 😍

Our vet bill just this week alone with 5 new senior arrivals, most with complicated medical issues, was over $10,000 even with steep discounts. But we can’t put a price on these precious lives and we hope you agree and will continue to support our work

This is a great video that explains why so many of our dogs, especially the cute floofy little ones, end up with their bad reputations and end up having to learn to defend themselves. They put up with a lot from humans and almost always give many many warning signs that are ignored or not understood before resorting to biting. Take the time to understand dog body language to keep your dogs and the people around them safe so they don’t end up a statistic.

Look who’s walking and wagging! It’s Raven! Our shy girl has come around and bonded with us, though still fearful of new people. She’s made some great progress this week walking on leash and making some new friends. Medically, she’s better than ever- thanks to our vets at Country Willow Veterinary Hospital and our partnership with Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge, she has been spayed, her ear infections treated, and she had multiple lumps removed that were benign!!! Raven is a 6-7 year old mini doodle and/or cockapoo of some sort with a beard like a schnoodle, about 16lbs. Here’s Princess out of the pound and after her sedated shave down makeover! As you can see she’s much happier. She has her issues and quirks for sure- doesn’t like being picked up or cornered and you have to let her come to you and decide when she’s comfortable on her terms, protects her food and space at times, and has to warm up to new people. So she’s not going to an easy adoption and will need someone who knows how to manage and work around quirky scared grumpy weird little shi#%… oops I mean Shih tzus 😜 The good news is she seems pretty housebroken and ok around other dogs. This was Princess on Tuesday morning at our local pound after being surrendered. She has a long sad story of being neglected and let down by people. This time around she was so matted she had trouble going to the bathroom and had a huge ball of feces caked to her back end.
