Tiny Martin has had his full body glow up and is ready to start his search for a forever home!
This almost 7 year old was being used for breeding in a puppy mill his whole life. Chosen to be kept for breeding because of his cool chocolate Merle markings and marble partly-blue eyes, he’s probably sired hundreds of mini doodles, cockapoos, bichon-poos, maltipoos… if there’s an oo in a puppy you purchased from a pet store or online broker, he could be the dad 🤷‍♀️ He’s only 9lbs and supposedly pure poodle but he looks more like a mix with a different shape to his face and shorter nose, maybe some gremlin in there somewhere. He’s shy but sweet, loves female dogs especially (but he’s now neutered so that part should calm down 😉), and is warming up to people. He’s in pretty good shape overall considering where he came from and is looking forward to the second half of his life being much better than the first. Our senior pair of min pins Isaiah and AnnaMae finally were adopted together! 🎉. They have been settling into their new home for the past couple of weeks and loving life and their new coats:). Still famously impossible to catch a good photo of together it seems 🤣

Our little puppy mill survivor Mark looks and feels like a whole new man!

This 5 year old mini poodle had a whirlwind 2 days: shave down, neuter, dental, bloodwork, the “works”! He’s timid but sweet, already dancing around wagging his stumpy tail for attention and makes good eye contact, alert and curious about this new world outside of a cage. He loves and follows other dogs and will need a home with another compatible doggie buddy to help him adjust. Everything is new to him and he will likely need some patience with housebreaking (and yes, may “mark” and need a belly band to start), and adjusting to a real home for the first time. He’s under 15lbs and has sought after Merle marking which is probably why he was kept for breeding instead of sold as a puppy, and now he needs to make up for lost time and discover what he’s missed out on all these years. Introducing Mashed Potato 🥔

The second dog we have gotten this month who was dumped at the pound still wearing his little Christmas sweater 😞

We named him because his teeth are so rotted we figured he would end up toothless after his neuter and dental, but his heart had other plans unfortunately 💔. We are looking for a hospice home for this friendly s***ky senior. He has a significant heart murmur and his echo showed concerns of pre-failure and very high risk for anesthesia even after starting meds, so he is starting on 3 medications to help support his heart and we are looking for a hospice home for him to live out what time he has. He’s a very social little guy, energetic but coughs when he gets too worked up so a chill home where he can spend a lot of time cuddling on the couch is best. We think he’s at least 12 years old but still very much mentally “with it”, seems to like other small dogs (a little too much maybe since he’s not neutered 🤦‍♀️), and mostly just wants to be around humans and not in a cage. He’s 11lbs, and we think min pin/chihuahua/terrier of some sort.

Another week, another group of puppy mill dogs discarded. Lucky for them, they were no longer needed for breeding and finally have a chance at life outside of cages.
7 year old mini poodle Mark was probably kept for breeding because of his pretty Merle markings. He likely fathered hundreds of puppies over the years, all the sought after designer poo hybrids… mini doodles, cavapoos, cockapoos, bichon poos, Yorkie poos…. Same goes for 5 year old Martin, a little chocolate Merle toy poodle only 9lbs. These boys are timid but non-aggressive, and Mark was already wagging his tail and dancing for attention.

Tiny girl Madison only weighs 7lbs and is a very timid but sweet girl who was following and cuddling with her doggie friends. She is said to be a mini Aussiedoodle? And was used to breed them probably even though she more resembles a longhair chi/papillon/pom type. Maybe a Toy Aussie but we aren’t seeing the doodle 🤦‍♀️. She’s 3 years old and still full of milk from her most recent litter of pups being taken away.

All of these little ones went right to our vet Country Willow Veterinary Hospital for full work ups… spay/neuter of course, dentals, vaccines, and more. They have never walked on leashes. Never had toys. Never had soft fuzzy beds or slept on a couch. Never been housebroken. Never been loved. They will soon be looking for patient calmer homes WITH another compatible doggie friend to learn from and follow as they navigate the transition from livestock to beloved companion.

Meet Benji!

This aptly named little senior terrier is at least 13 but still has some s***k and was probably quite the little hellion in his youth. He’s friendly and craves attention, isn’t happy being crated or gated away from the action and demands to be around his people.

His teeth were rotting and he only had 6 remaining after his long overdue dental. He’s 11lbs and some kind of Yorkie mixed with maybe Pom or Papillon? He has an unusual thick double coat and not the non-shedding Yorkie hair, but he’s extra soft. He’s a happy little one who likes his walks, has a good appetite and is in pretty good shape for an old man. He’s ok with some small dogs and even a bit of a flirt with the ladies even though he’s been long neutered. A cute little companion for a senior-lover who doesn’t want a blobby slow old man who just naps all the time and still has that terrier energy to keep him young a few more years.

Sweet Zane Needs a Fospice Home 🐾💔

On Friday, we welcomed sweet Zane into our care, knowing he had a grade 3 heart murmur. Yesterday, our vet saw him, and by sheer luck, we were able to get him an echocardiogram today.

Sadly, Zane has been diagnosed with Subaortic Stenosis, a serious condition that can lead to sudden death or congestive heart failure. Despite this heartbreaking news, Zane remains the sweetest nugget who deserves a loving, stress-free environment for whatever time he has left.

🏡 We need to urgently place him in a fospice home.
• The kennel is far too stressful for a dog in his condition.
• We will provide everything needed for his care.
• A home with other pets is okay, as long as he has his own space.

Zane will start medication right away. He’s an absolute sweetheart and deserves a comfy, loving home to spend his days.

Meet Marvin the Martian 👽

This little weirdo made quite the first impression… he came to us somehow simultaneously shrieking, snapping, drooling, peeing, and pooping as soon as anyone looked at or touched him 😱. He was abandoned and taken in by a well meaning family who wasn’t sure what to do with this terrified defensive little guy. Exactly 1 week after getting settled in with us and being given space, he suddenly woke up on the right side of the bed finally and decided we are now best friends 🤷‍♀️. Wagging his tail, playing, giving kisses, letting us hold him and squish his face… just a completely different dog. He seemed to be pretty young and puppyish actually, maybe about a year old and a Shih tzu maybe mixed with Maltese, about 12lbs only.

Now we aren’t naive enough to think we have cured him of all his fears in a week and he’s going to be a perfect little family companion. He’s definitely very undersocialized and can have some pretty extreme and unreasonable over reactions when scared. But now that he’s shown us he’s capable of bonding and being a cuddly sweetheart once he bonds, we know his special person is out there and we can see he has so much potential. He’s ok with other small dogs which has probably helped a lot in his attitude adjustment as he watched and followed them. We never underestimate the educational power of a pack of dogs in teaching each other. We are starting to look for a calmer adult understanding home for him that will give him space and not overwhelm him with hugs and kisses until he decides he’s ready.

Sweet deaf pup Luigi still hasn’t had any applications. We easily forget he’s differently abled as he’s always watching us and following the other dogs, and is definitely a smart trainable little guy. He’s 4 years old and a cuddly playful sweet boy, sometimes a little nervous at first but quickly warms up. He is looking for a home with at least one other compatible doggie friend to follow- he’s always lived with multiple dogs and gets more anxious alone without them. Our antisocial little schnauzie Fritz is back on the market and looking for an understanding home. He was a puppy mill survivor from a particularly awful mill where dogs were likely handled roughly and scruffed on the rare occasions they were touched at all. So all the dogs saved have had some extra behavior quirks and not particularly comfortable being petted and held.
He only has 9 teeth but still has his fangs so can still defend himself when he feels threatened. He’s not a touchy feely guy- a quick pat on the head is more than enough although once he bonds he will follow you around and want to be near you, just isn’t sure quite how to handle more attention that that. He’s not a fan of being picked up, dressed up, or his collar grabbed and needs some oral sleepytime meds before vet and grooming appointments to avoid stressing everyone out. He loves other dogs especially the ladies, though sometimes has a weird way of showing it and will bark at and “herd” them like a true bossy little terrier. He loves food and is a hungry guy who will do just about anything for a treat so that’s definitely the way to his heart. His ideal home would be with other little dogs and someone who will let him be and not force love and affection on him, and accept him on his terms. He’s about 6-7 years old, had a recent dental cleaning again, is neutered and updated on shots, and hoping to find an understanding schnauzer person to love him unconditionally, even if it’s mostly at a distance.

Shy puppy mill survivor Harper is still looking for a patient adult home WITH at least one other compatible doggie friend.

Alumni Rocket has his first official job as a “foster brother” helping Harper socialize and adjust to life in a home, and he’s helped her make a lot of progress already! She’s still timid more so with men but follows Rocket and wrestles and plays with him. She is even starting to enjoy having her head patted a little and coming up for attention, though she’s still skittish about being picked up. She’s working on housebreaking and doing well walking on a leash and is always watching people inquisitively.

Introducing Benny!

This shy guy with big soulful eyes came to us when his owner passed away. He’s a 10 year old mixed breed, maybe doxie, chihuahua, min pin, jack Russell, rat terrier, or all of the above, 11lbs full grown. He’s nervous at first with new people and too much noise but a sweet little lap dog once he bonds, fine with other dogs and looking for a quiet home where his loyalty and devotion will be appreciated. He’s a healthy “young senior”, just had bloodwork and a dental, and plans to be with you another decade hopefully.

Moody Moby is officially on the market! Get your applications in now 🤣. Don’t all apply at once now…

This tiny one is a true Second Chance classic masterpiece. There’s not one thing normal about him. He’s a tiny 5lbs chi/Yorkie surrendered to a shelter when he was no longer wanted. The owner wrote in several places on the surrender form that he could be “fisty” at times. We are going to assume they meant feisty, though we could definitely picture him putting on little boxing gloves 🥊 and using his fists in addition to his teeth 👹 He has an old break to his front leg that was never properly fixed so he sometimes holds it up and it’s kind of wonky and crooked looking. His teeth were icky and he had a dental so he no longer has those front little pinchy incisors and only has 3 out of 4 fangs, but still more teeth left than we were hoping for. He doesn’t really have the kind of hair that requires a lot of grooming but got his few little mat dreadlocks shaved off during his dental so he looks slightly less disheveled now, but always looks like he’s just recovering from being electrocuted ⚡️ He likes to be on your lap but not necessarily too much cuddling and petting, he’s just using you as a raised platform bed so he can look down on all the other dogs. He LOVES human food and dances as soon as you open the fridge, and sharing your lunch is the best way to bond with him. He’s just fine with other calm tiny dogs and has even been caught cuddling with other cranky chihuahuas, so his attitude toward people is definitely more man-made and he probably wasn’t born evil but made that way by annoying humans manhandling him and being only 5lbs learned to protect himself the only way he could. No, he does not need a sweater, or bows in his hair, or little booties, he can take care of himself just fine and use wee wee pads if it’s that cold. He’s 8 years old but plans to live with at least 18, has a heart murmur but no medications needed at this time for it.
