The No Kill Advocacy Center defines “irremediable physical suffering” as an animal who has “a poor or grave prognosis for being able to live without severe, unremitting pain even with comprehensive, prompt, and necessary veterinary care,” such as animals in fulminant organ system failure. But some shelters and their allies have suggested that the definition is too narrow as it does not allow for mental suffering.

Can dogs, cats, and other animals be so traumatized that they should not be—indeed would not want to be—alive? In short, is there such a thing as “irremediable psychological suffering”?

No. There is no such thing as an animal who is irremediably psychologically or behaviorally suffering. They can and must be saved. It should, therefore, never be a death sentence as some shelters and the ASPCA have suggested.

Has this happened to you? How does your dog react. I have one that just climbs up and tries to sit ON the guest...but he's polite enough NOT to bite them.

We had so much fun with NBC Bay Area! They came in today to meet some of our pets in preparation for Clear The Shelters. They were so awesome we couldn't help naming these little poopies after meteorologist Kari Hall and camera man Alan Waples (it's his birthday!). Free adoptions at all our locations this Saturday, August 15th. www.hssv.org

This is a promising trend among some shelters...

The cities of Healdsburg and Sebastopol in California have joined the ranks of communities saving in excess of 90% of all the animals. For those who want proof—just the stats and nothing else—demonstrating that many communities across the country are saving 95%, 99% and in a few cases 100% of the animals, here it is: saving90.org

I love to see this kind of community activism, especially when it benefits needy animals!

Enjoying watching "Is Your Dog A Genius" on NatGeoWild, though I'm disappointed the Dognition Test is NOT free; it's a fee-based service. I think it's kinda of an infomercial rather than an educational show...But here is a good Dognition blog post on rescue.

A wonderful short film about Nathan Winograd's wonderful "No-Kill Advocacy Center." And, no, do NOT assume your local shelter is actually "no-kill." It all resides in the definition, amazingly, of "adoptable." You must ask questions and hold authorities accountable for local animal-control facilities.

The No Kill Advocacy Center, in partnership with No Kill Nation and Sagacity Productions, is proud to announce the upcoming release of a feature-length documentary…
