Lake Merritt Dog Park (a.k.a. Lakeview Dog Play Area)

Lake Merritt Dog Park (a.k.a. Lakeview Dog Play Area) This was the PROPOSED dog play area for Lake Merritt. We're keeping the page active for outreach on dog parks in Oakland and dog ownership. http://bit.ly/MXpNPZ

We, the dog owners and lovers of Oakland, support all varieties of dog parks, big and small, and we know that with the ban on dogs in most Oakland parks, every off-leash area is extremely important. The Lakeview Dog Play Area needs your support. Send an email in the next 24 hours to convince the city that dog owners deserve space in this neighborhood. We’ve made it extremely simple to send a note

of support with our form letter: http://www.emailmeform.com/builder/form/iK0Af4f29x1L45I084b1O
You can use it as-is, or use our talking point to write your own letter. Talking Points:

Dog play area provides social space for people with dogs. Dog play area approved in Lake Merritt Master Plan and by the Parks Commission (2006 and 2010). Proposed plan gives us a legal space to go with our dogs. This busy neighborhood needs this amenity so we don’t have to drive to Alameda and Berkeley every day. The multi-use park has room for dogs, kids, soccer and more.

We need more dog fosters! Short term, medium term, long term, medical fosters, we need them all! Our shelter is full full full, and the more dogs we can get into foster homes, the better for all the dogs in our care! Even if you can only help out for a few days, that's a help to us!

We've got lots of different dogs looking for all kinds of fosters from active youngsters to snoozy seniors and everything in between!

Fostering a dog not only helps the dog that you foster, but also gives us space to help more dogs in the shelter.

Why foster? There are as many reasons as there are people, but here are some of the ones we love:
🧡 You're not in a position to make a long commitment, but want the companionship of a dog right now
🧡 You have some tennis balls that aren't going to fetch themselves
🧡 Your resident dog wants a friend
🧡 You want to help us get to know everything about a dog so we can find their perfect forever home
🧡 You want the joy of helping a dog in need
🧡 Your furniture doesn't have enough dog hair on it yet
🧡 You've always wondered what kind of dog you might love and fostering gives you a chance to learn
🧡 You need some help establishing a regular walking habit
🧡 You want to confirm there's a dog-shaped hole in your life by putting a dog in there
🧡 You really want to do extra laundry

Whatever your reasons, we'd love to help you learn more about our dog fostering program and needs. Submit an application at the link below to learn more. No commitment until you're ready to make a commitment!

Potential fosters can also join our foster group here. Please be sure to answer the screening questions when you request to join.

Oyster (pictured below) is a big boy at 72 lbs who is a total sweetheart of a dog who needs a foster. He's 3 yrs old and ready for adventure, he has done well with other dogs. Best in an active home with adults, as he could bowl over a youngster!

If Oyster's not your size or speed, we've got lots of different dogs looking for all kinds of fosters from active youngsters to snoozy seniors and everything in between!

Harmful algal blooms (HABs), also known as red tides, are currently impacting area waterways. Per the California Water Control Board’s guidance, it is highly recommended that people and their pets stay out of the water until the blooms dissipate. Contact with the algae blooms can cause skin irritation and burning eyes in humans and can cause more dangerous effects on dogs.
