Why is pumpkin pie bad for dogs?
You may be surprised to learn that the most dangerous pumpkin pie ingredient for dogs comes from your spice cabinet: nutmeg. Dr. Charlotte Flint, who is the staff veterinarian at Pet Poison Helpline, writes that nutmeg contains a compound called myristicin, which is toxic to pets. In high doses, this toxin can cause hallucinations, disorientation, high blood pressure, seizures, and other dangerous symptoms. Luckily, most baked goods incorporate only a small amount of nutmeg—so if your pup nabbed a slice of pumpkin pie from the counter, the chances of such a severe reaction are low. Small quantities of nutmeg are likely to give your furry friend nothing more than a mild tummy ache, but it's still best to keep any foods with nutmeg—and the shaker itself—out of reach. (Nutmeg is also a key ingredient in pumpkin pie spice mixes, so be sure to avoid sharing any pumpkin spice treats with your pup as well!)
