The Basics of Horse Conformation

Horse conformation is the physical makeup of the horse. Each breed has an ideal standard for what a horse should look like. Conformation is mainly genetic. Most traits of conformation are simply the traits a horse is born with. However, conformation can be affected by the horse's health, exercise, and performance in competition.

Horse Conformation Assessment

Before you purchase a horse, consider assessing his conformation. Conformation is not the only sign of performance. That being said, you will also want to determine the horse’s overall demeanor, stamina, and temperament.

Head and Neck

The neck of your horse should be muscular and well-set. Additionally, it should be flexible and long enough to allow for movement and turning. You will see large eyes on his head and a convex profile.

If you have experience with cattle, you’ve probably heard about white muscle disease (WMD). This condition, caused by a lack of selenium and vitamin E, affects young calves. It can lead to weakness, trouble standing, and sometimes sudden death. Here, we will talk about what White Muscle Disease is, how to spot it, and how to prevent it in your cattle.

What Is White Muscle Disease?

White Muscle Disease is a degenerative condition affecting calves, lambs, and sometimes adult cattle. It occurs when diets lack selenium and vitamin E, which protect muscles. This leads to muscle breakdown, causing the pale, streaky look that names the disease.

There are two main forms of this disease: the cardiac form and the skeletal form. The cardiac form affects the heart muscles and is often fatal. Calves with this condition may have trouble breathing, weakness, and could suddenly collapse. It mainly affects the muscles in the legs, shoulders, and back. Affected calves might have trouble standing, appear stiff, or struggle to walk.

Choking in horses is a common problem that every horse owner should be ready to handle. While it is not the same as choking in humans, it still needs immediate attention. Let’s identify signs of choking in horses, what causes it, and the best ways to manage and prevent it.

What Is Choking in Horses?

Choking in horses occurs when hay, grain, or another object gets stuck in the esophagus and can’t reach the stomach. Unlike choking in humans, choking in horses doesn’t block the airway, so the horse can still breathe.

However, choking is still a medical emergency because it can cause serious complications if it lasts too long. These include pneumonia, dehydration, or damage to the esophagus.

Winter brings its own set of challenges for horse owners. With cold weather, snow, freezing rain, and frozen ground, your horse’s health can be affected in ways that aren’t always obvious. Keeping an eye out for signs of colic, stress, respiratory issues, and skin conditions like rain rot can make a big difference. Most of these issues have a good prognosis when you notice them early. Read on for a closer look at the most common winter-related issues and ways to prevent and manage them.

Cold Stress and Colic

As temperatures drop, horses can experience stress and colic. Cold-related stress can lower a horse’s body temperature, leading to discomfort and digestive issues, such as bloating. Colic is more common in winter because colder temperatures can slow the digestive system. To prevent both, ensure your horse stays warm, dry, and hydrated.
