Here are some tips to keep your dog safe during fireworks:
• Never leave your dog unattended outside during fireworks.
• Keep your dog indoors in a quiet room. Close the curtains or blinds and turn on the TV to provide some distraction.
• Provide your dog with a safe haven, such as a crate or a designated quiet area, with comfy bedding and their favorite toys.
• Consider using anti-anxiety vest or thunder shirt

SOLUTIONS FOR ANIXIOUS OR FEARFUL DOGS: whether it's loud noises, thunder & lightening, or fireworks, there are things you can purchase to help your dog cope with stressful situations. This is a Thundershirt wrap (there are several other similar products out there also under other names), and can be useful for short-term anxiety. You would, of course, want to get your dog used to wearing something like this in advance, before July 4th, by having them wear it at different times in the house. Always reward them with lots of treats and positive reinforcement when putting on something new like this, so they come to view it as a "happy experience" and not something scary associated with thunderstorms, for example. You can buy them at pet supply stores - we recommend the kind of places with knowledgeable people to help you pick the right fit and size - such as Paws & Claws, ETC in West Ocean City and Yarn & Bone Pet Supply & Pet Wash stores in Delaware.

In addition, there are medications you vet can prescribe if your dog or cat is extremely nervous or frantic during times of loud noises, etc. ALWAYS ask your veterinarian about meds before giving - never use something that has been prescribed for another animal without consulting a doctor as you would not have the correct dose. You would also want to start out giving something in advance of the day you really need it (i.e., July 4th), to make sure the animal does not have any adverse reactions, and to see how they respond.

This little guy definitely does a bit better during thunderstorms when wearing his Thundershirt. He also has medication, however it takes a long time to work (45 minutes), so if a sudden storm comes up the meds don't really help at that point. However, for July 4th I would give them well in advance so he can be sort of drowsy and not frantic all night long.

We hope these suggestions may help your animal cope with difficult times. Prevention of lost pets is always our goal!

LOST DOG: This sweet boy was found wandering around 48th Street around 6:15 p.m. He is a brown dog with grey fur around his muzzle. Very friendly, has a blue collar with no ID tags. He has a healed scar on his left rib cage, sores on both ears and a mass near his right eye. He is approximately 40 pounds. You may be thinking "I have weeks until the July 4th weekend".....but start now to plan a safe holiday this year. Are your pet's microchips up to date? Collars with I.D. tags in good condition? Making plans that include a safe place for your animals during fireworks displays - if you are traveling out of town, perhaps staying in an RV or trailer, you won't have the same safe and secure environment your animals are used to at home.

Thinking about this today just may save the life of your best friend next month. PLEASE PLAN AHEAD.
