🌟 Fun Fact Friday: Ocracoke Light Station! 🌟

Did you know that the iconic Ocracoke Light Station began construction on December 5, 1822?

Built on land originally owned by the Gaskill family (a family that still has roots on the island today!), the light station project had a budget of $20,000—about $600,000 in today’s money!

The lighthouse was strategically placed in Ocracoke Inlet to improve shipping routes to Pamlico Sound, connecting the Atlantic Ocean to the North Carolina mainland and boosting transportation and trade in the United States. 🌊🚢

Fast forward to today, the lighthouse is a popular destination for visitors who come to admire the view, snap some photos, and take in the island’s rich history. 📸✨

EDIT: The December 5, 1822, date given above is actually the date of the sale of the land upon which Ocracoke Light Station was to be built. Construction did not officially begin on the lighthouse until sometime after June 1823.

This will be a thrilling and fun event for anglers of all skill levels! Held at one of the premier fishing destinations on the East Coast, the tournament features competitive fishing for Red Drum, with cash prizes and awards for the top catches. Come and enjoy the camaraderie, excitement, and challenge of reeling in the biggest fish! Along with the main event, there is a lunch, awards ceremony, and music at the Berkley Barn. 🎾🏓 Serve up some fun on your Ocracoke visit! 😄 The Community Courts are open! Rally your way to a great time with tennis and pickleball 7am - 8pm daily at the end of Horse Pen Lane. Play nice and have a ball! 🌞

The Ocracoke Community Courts will be OPEN for play starting this Sunday June 9th, 7am to 8pm daily. Get your tennis rackets and pickle ball paddles ready!! Located at the end of horse pen lane!!

Please follow these rules:
Use the Courts at your own risk
Absolutely NO wheels (bikes, skates, skateboards, scooters, etc.)
No food, glass, or alcoholic beverages inside the courts
Proper Footwear required
No overnight parking/camping
Be respectful of our neighbors
No pets
Pack in, pack out, no trash cans available on sight
No loud music
No smoking/fires
Portapotty/bathrooms available at the ball field

Rules for Play:
First come first serve
Limit to one match if people are waiting
Paddles up
