Yesterday was a busy day. We started by teach a seeds starting class for 100 4th graders at an elementary on the southside, then we joined the Urban Ag Network and led a workshop activity for our local foods system leaders, and ended the day with a traditional foods demo/presentation for our urban native youth. I’d say it was a very productive day. NFS is supporting the development of a “community market” concept at the Culture Hub. The 1st market will on next Ndn Holyday/ cross quarter day on Feb 1st. The intention is to create a cultural market that doesn’t exist and to inspire more of our native community to participate. Thank you for all the community support we’ve received the past few years. We Hope to meet more community leaders who are into collaboration and strategic planning this year! Hiy-hiy kipeechii-hey ✌🏽😁

We realized that we can’t turn everyone into urban farmers by next week, but, what we can do is help people make better choices about the food they eat next week….our city needs an Indian resource center, traditional foods/herbs market, and a venue for local artists to vend. First, our community needs information and education on how to organize to build our community market. We need to support our entrepreneurs to help them develop small business operations that are resilient and diverse in nature. We hope to stimulate collaborative projects within the existing Indian arts and foods community with support from the health sciences community. Oklahoma is last in the country for so many things. Non natives will scoff at that idea and I always remind that Our Indian kids are at the very bottom of each one of those lists. This is the worst state to be a woman and it’s probably one of the most to be an indigenous woman. Let’s talk about planting seeds for a prairie-grassroots organization in OKc. It will take 5 years to establish its roots but once it does, this org will stand up to fire, drought, ice, and disease.

This evening we are presenting on food security and community gardening. Please join us in helping spread the word about the local food access and food literacy movement that is building in our area. We are at the bottom of the list for food access, food literacy, community gardens, and community building. Let’s come together and talk about how to change this. The community needs to be there and so do members from higher ed, the medical community, and city planners need to be apart of these convos….please like n share with folks who you feel should be in attendance…,🖖🏾😎

during the pandemic I thought the world was going to end and I invested alot more time in the garden and found a really great way to grow plants using my knowledge of herbalism to craft medicine for people and fertilizer for plants
I was tired of talking to construction workers about the stars and how to make plants grow and being treated like I was an alien for doing so. When I met the sustainability crew at SPK I immediately found that I could talk about plants and healthy foods and was heard.
After the world didn’t end, I came out of our bunker n started looking for work in the horticultural space and this led me to ScissortailPark
It didn’t take long before we found our circle of friends and decided to started our own club.
We called ourselves “The Green Team”
We started meeting every few weeks to strategize our organizing efforts and our approach.
Park life isn’t for everyone, after awhile we all drifted away from the park program and found positions elsewhere in the local food justice and environmental justice community.

In 2019, the native community was able to open the first school for native youth in an area just north of OKC. It was called: “the sovereign community school” SCS opened just before the pandemic happened. The program started off on wobbly legs and the pandemic made everything even more challenging and the school did not continue after graduating its first class of seniors. What this did tho, was bring like-minded members of the community together and the struggles to keep going are what separated he committed and the brave from the rest of the crowd. During this time, community members found a strong bond in serving our youth and working together to protect them from bullying and being outcasted for being proud to be an Oklahoma Indian. The school closed down but the remaining staff moved on and started different organizations and programs that continue to serve our native youth and we all still work together to encourage our youth today. I was looking to get away from welding and went to work as a horticulturalist at Scissortail park in OKC which had gone through a similar situation having opened just before the pandemic. This is where I met The OKC Green Team. More time come…
