Saskia is a great source of information and this is good to remember!

Lets talk about bloat. Bloat can crop up at any time with any pig, any age. regardless of diet. We call it Bloat because you will be able to see a distended tummy area that can feel tight at the touch.

There are different severities of bloat.
1) If the pig is not eating and sitting all hunched up facing the corner. and as a dull look in her eyes, then we have a really big problem, and veterinary intervention is urgent at this point.

2) The pig looks and feels bloated but acts normal otherwise. Is active and eating and pooping. Those cases are the best with the best outcomes. You can manage these yourselves if you wanted with baby gas drops (Simethicone) and lots of food to keep things moving. If pig is eating but not pooping as much in relation to the amount she is eating you can also give some prune juice to help the situation resolve itself.
Thankfully we do not see it very often and most all we can resolve with the method explained above.

It is a great idea to have baby gas drop handy in your emergency kit.

Roger & Ragu are about a year old and were rescued from a flooded parking lot back in October. They are still working on trusting people, but have made leaps & bounds during their time in foster care. They would do best in a quiet home with a pig-savvy family, ideally with no children under 12.

And now for something different! These 2 budgies found themselves at a local shelter so we pulled them into our rescue. They are both boys and get along okay, they can be adopted together or separately if you have another bird (they need companionship just like guinea pigs). They can come with their cage if needed. If you have any questions about parakeets, feel free to reach out!

These young boys were born at the rescue on June 19th and would love to find their forever home! They would be great to pair with another male piggie, or can be adopted together. They both will run to the side of the cage and take snacks out of your hand.

Great advice for bonding piggies! We have the most luck with females of any age, but adult males do best when paired up with a baby boy.

Piggies available from a fellow rescue organization! And a reminder that piggie ownership is a responsibility, so please do your research before committing to them.

Ham Solo & Benny have found their way back to our rescue again, due to no fault of their own. While there is no shame in admitting you are not able to meet the needs of these critters, please think carefully about whether Guinea pigs are the right choice for your family.

Guinea pigs are a huge responsibility and commitment. On average, Guinea pigs live 5-8 years. They require daily care including a constant supply of fresh hay and water, and fresh veggies daily. They require multiple cage cleanings a week, depending on substrate and habitat size, nail trims every few weeks, and are prone to a number of illnesses that require the care of an exotic veterinarian. They are social animals and do best in pairs, and single pigs need regular socialization.

Don’t let these things deter you from owning piggies, but if this sounds like too much of a commitment for you or your family, they might not be the pet for you.

Teamwork makes the rescue work! Sending out HUGE thanks to Forgotten Treasures Animal Rescue for taking these cute boys when we weren't able to.
