Remembering Richard šŸ’”

Richard, our sweet 13-year-old Chinese Crested, joined the sanctuary just last month. He came to us after his family stopped reclaiming him from the Norman shelter. Richard arrived in rough shapeā€”his tail was matted, his belly was full of worms, and he had untreated dry eye. With love and care, we got him feeling better in so many ways.

Unfortunately, Richardā€™s kidneys told a different story. During his intake, we discovered they were in failure. After consulting with our vets, we made the heartbreaking decision to let him go peacefully.

We used to shy away from sharing when one of our residents passed away or we helped them cross the rainbow bridge. Itā€™s hard to be vulnerable, and we worried about how it would be received. We wanted to stay positive and keep the focus on hope. But over time, we realized that being open about the harder side of rescue is just as important. You are part of this journey, and we want you to feel as included in the reality of rescue as possible.

Losing Richard so soon after he arrived feels especially unfair. Weā€™re so sorry we didnā€™t get more time to show him what a life full of love feels like, but we hope he felt it during his short time with us. He deserved a life free from pain, and weā€™re grateful we could give him that.

Run free, sweet boy. Youā€™ll always have a place in our hearts. šŸŒˆšŸ’›

If youā€™d like to honor Richardā€™s memory and help cover the costs of his blood work and humane euthanasia, we would be so grateful. Right now, your support can go even furtherā€”donations are double-matched through the end of January, and if you join the Pawsie as a monthly donor, your gift will be matched for six months!

As we closed the chapter on 2024, weā€™re holding space for both gratitude and the bittersweet reality of our work. Last year, we saved 49 dogs and 5 catsā€”an incredible number that fills our hearts, but one that comes with nearly as many goodbyes.

Most of the animals who come to us are here for their final golden daysā€”a soft place to land, where theyā€™re finally loved as they deserve to be. Itā€™s an honor to be their family in these final moments, but itā€™s also heartbreaking. People often ask how we keep going when this work is so heavy. The answer? The heartbreak is just a small piece of a much bigger storyā€”the joy of seeing them safe, cherished, and happy far outweighs the pain.

We couldnā€™t do this without you. To Waterloo Animal Hospital, who stands by us through every high and lowā€”thank you. To our Pawsie Members, who show up for us month after monthā€”you are the heartbeat of this mission. And to every single person whoā€™s donated, shared, or sent words of encouragementā€”you remind us why we do this.

As we plan ahead in 2025, weā€™re leaning into one guiding word for this year: Cultivate. Itā€™s a reminder to nurture what matters most and to grow with intention.

Hereā€™s whatā€™s ahead:

ā€¢ Permanent electricity to make daily care smoother for everyone.
ā€¢ A second building with a private yard for Victoria, which will also make room to rescue another big oldie.
ā€¢ Private kennels for each resident, giving them cozy spaces for meals and rest.
ā€¢ A Rainbow Bridge Memorial in our oldiesā€™ yard to honor every precious soul who has passed.
ā€¢ More enrichment and joy for our residents, from sensory gardens to peaceful resting spots.

This year, weā€™re dreaming big. We want to grow our Pawsie community, welcome new volunteers who share our passion, and deepen our connection with all of you. Most importantly, weā€™re committed to continuing this mission: saving lives and giving our current residents the very best days of their lives.

This work is hard, but itā€™s worth every moment. And itā€™s possible because of you. Thank you for being here, for believing in us, and for loving these animals as much as we do. Letā€™s make 2025 our best year yet. We canā€™t wait to do it together.

Weā€™ve included some of the beautiful souls weā€™ve had the honor of loving and saying goodbye to this year. Each of them left paw prints on our hearts and reminds us why this work matters so much.

šŸŽ‰ Happy Birthday to Tabitha! šŸŽ‰

Today, Tabitha turns 31ā€”and itā€™s no exaggeration to say sheā€™s spent over two decades of her life dedicated to animal rescue. While most of us were playing outside, watching cartoons, or just being kids, 9-year-old Tabitha was spending her Saturdays making a difference.

It all started in her home state of California, where she walked into a pet store one weekend and found a rabbit rescue hosting an adoption event. She asked what they were doing, and instead of brushing her off, they handed her a stack of papers and told her to come back if she wanted to learn more. That day, Tabitha went home, read every single page (more than once), and returned the next weekend.

From that moment on, Tabitha spent every Saturday volunteeringā€”cleaning cages, feeding animals, and eventually fostering rabbits with special needs. She cared for paralyzed rabbits, ones with head tilts, limb differences, and more, all while gaining a deeper understanding of just how many animals need help.

After her first year of college, Tabitha moved to Arizona, where her focus shifted to dogs. Working as a vet tech, she saw firsthand the immense need in the area. She began rescuing moms and their puppies, saving countless lives in the process. But when she and her husband, Tyler, eventually moved to Oklahoma, Tabitha discovered an even greater need here.

Over the years, Tabitha helped establish and run two rescues before realizing where her heart truly lies: senior and special needs animals. Now, as the founder and president of Silver Paws, she pours everything she has into these animals.

And when I say everything, I mean everything. Tabitha is a mom to three young kids, including a newborn, and still knows each sanctuary dog like theyā€™re family. She remembers every dogā€™s favorite blanket, their quirks, the places they like to hide, and the weird, silly things that make them unique. Sheā€™s not just their rescuerā€”sheā€™s their person.

To honor Tabithaā€™s unwavering dedication, her friends and family have come together to celebrate her birthday in the best way we know howā€”by making an incredible $10,000 matching gift available this month!

šŸ’› Hereā€™s how you can join the celebration:

ā€¢ Donate today, and your gift will be matched dollar-for-dollar.
ā€¢ Join our monthly giving program, the Pawsie, and your recurring gift will be matched for six months.

Letā€™s make this the best birthday ever by showing Tabitha that her passion for saving lives inspires us all. We canā€™t do this without you!

Welcome, Harry! šŸ¾āœØ

This little Yorkie boy has already made himself right at home. Harry was found by an angel who cleaned him up and nursed him back to health. While his owners were quickly found and noted he had been gone just an hour, Harry was in horrific condition. Thankfully when questioned about his poor condition the owners chose to surrender him. The vets office said little Harry had the worst case of intestinal worms they had ever seen. As much as the angel who found him loves him, Harryā€™s very Yorkie love of barking made it hard for him to stay in her apartment. So, she reached out to us, and we couldnā€™t say no to that scruffy little face!

True to Yorkie form, Harryā€™s got a BIG personality in a tiny package. Heā€™s confident, sassy, and thinks heā€™s the boss around hereā€”but heā€™s also a total sweetheart whoā€™s settling in beautifully. šŸ’›

If Harryā€™s story warms your heart, weā€™d love your help. We had some big expenses last week (details coming soon!), and weā€™ve got a donor match happening right nowā€”so every dollar you give is DOUBLED! Your support ensures we can keep saying ā€œyesā€ to dogs like Harry who need us. šŸ¶šŸ’–

šŸŽ‰ HUGE NEWS: Phelps Has Been Adopted! šŸŽ‰

We are beyond thrilled to share that Phelps, now known as Crash, has found his forever home! šŸ šŸ’™ Heā€™s living his absolute best life surrounded by his amazing new siblings and the most loving parents a dog could ask for.

Crash came to us in the darkest of timesā€”hit by a car, left to suffer for days, and in critical condition when he finally reached our vet. But with his incredible fighting spirit and the help of our dedicated vets, Crash pulled through. šŸ™ŒšŸ’Ŗ

Now, heā€™s thriving and ready to enjoy all the golden days ahead! šŸŒŸšŸ¾ Happy life, sweet Crashā€”we know itā€™s going to be nothing short of amazing. šŸ’–

šŸ’” Last night, we lost our sweet Letty.

As Tabitha was making dinner for the oldies, she noticed Letty wasnā€™t in her usual spot. She went to check on her and found Letty having a massive seizure. Tabitha scooped her up and rushed to the emergency vet, but Letty passed away in her arms on the way.

Weā€™re devastated. Letty came to us with a seizure disorder, but her condition had been so well-managed that this was completely unexpected. She was such a little girl with a big heart, and losing her so suddenly has left a huge hole in ours.

For Tabitha, this was especially heartbreaking. She gives everything to these oldiesā€”to see them through every stage of their lives with love and dignity. But last night, as she held Letty, she had to witness something no caregiver should ever have to see. It was the kind of moment that shakes you to your core.

This is her birthday month, and her friends and family wanted to honor her by creating a special gift for the sanctuary. Theyā€™ve pledged a $10,000 donation match for the month of January. If you join the Pawsie this month, your gift will be matched for six full months.

Would you consider donating or joining in Lettyā€™s honor? Nothing will ever erase the pain of losing her, but together, we can ensure her life was part of something so much bigger. Each gift makes it possible for us to keep showing up for dogs like Lettyā€”dogs who would have nowhere else to go.

šŸ’– Letā€™s honor Letty. Letā€™s celebrate Tabitha and her incredible love for these seniors. And letā€™s make this month something beautiful, even in the face of heartbreak.

Meet Allen and Mosby

These two came to us together under tough circumstances, and while Mosby doesnā€™t quite meet the senior or special needs criteria we usually focus on, we couldnā€™t leave him behind.

Like so many seniors, Allen and Mosby needed a soft place to land. Because of your support, they now have a future filled with love, care, and second chances.

At just 5 years old, Mosbyā€™s needs are pretty straightforward: a full dental, vaccines, and neutering. Allen, however, has a bit more on his plate (literally and figuratively). First, weā€™re helping him shed the (extra) extra poundsā€”he weighed a whopping 33.5 pounds at his shelter intake! After that, weā€™ll tackle his other health needs, including cherry eye treatment in both eyes, mass removals, and dental care. Both boys will also receive senior blood panels to catch any hidden health concerns.

But we canā€™t do this without your help!

Weā€™re currently at only $170 of our $10,000 match goal, and every dollar you give will be doubled through January 31st at midnight. Become a monthly donor through our Pawsie program, and your gift will be double-matched for six months, turning your kindness into triple the impact for Allen, Mosby, and all the animals in our care.

Your support provides:
ā€¢ Life-saving medical care
ā€¢ Food, shelter, and enrichment
ā€¢ Golden days

Thanks to your support, Allen gets to be the confident, affectionate love bug he was born to be, and Mosby can finally feel safe enough to trust and accept love.

Pawsie Perks Include:
ā€¢ 10% off sanctuary merchandise
ā€¢ Weekly updates through our exclusive Pawsie Post
ā€¢ Access to a private, members-only group
ā€¢ Unique thank-you gifts
ā€¢ And more!

Letā€™s hit this $10K goal together before the deadline! Every dollar gets us closer to giving Allen and Mosby their second chance at life.

šŸŽ‰ Birthday Magic Update! šŸŽ‰

Tabitha (our president) is celebrating her birthday this month! So her frriends and family have come together to give her (and the oldies!!!) the most incredible birthday gift: theyā€™ve pledged $10,000 to match your donations for Silver Paws Golden Days Co Sanctuary until the end of January! šŸ˜±šŸ¤Æ

Hereā€™s how it works:
šŸ’µ Donate any amount and theyā€™ll double it at the end of the month! Donate $10? Itā€™s matched, doubling your impact to $20.
šŸ¾ Sign up for Pawsie! Theyā€™ll match your monthly donations for 6 months! That means $5/month turns into $60 of life-saving care for senior and special needs animals.

We have an opportunity to raise $20,000 for our sanctuary if we can hit the $10,000 mark. Every dollar you donate gets doubledā€”if we raise $7K, thatā€™s $14K. But if we hit the full $10K, our rescue will receive a total of $20,000 to help us care for the animals who need us most!

This kind of funding is HUGE for us. It means more vet care, more rescues, and more second chances for the seniors and special needs animals who have nowhere else to go.

Letā€™s make this birthday wish come true together! šŸ¾

šŸ’– Donate now to have twice the impact

Itā€™s snowing here in Oklahoma! ā„ļø Some of the oldies are loving itā€¦ others, not so much. How do you feel about snow days?

Billie? Oh, heā€™s THRIVING. This is his element, and he couldnā€™t be happier. Lincoln, on the other hand, is deeply offended that weā€™d even consider making him experience this weather. His highness much prefers to drop his Lincoln logs indoors when the weather isnā€™t to his liking, but we thought maybe, just maybe, we could get a cute snow photo. Spoiler alert: we could not. šŸ˜¤

The rest of the pack had mixed reactions, but hereā€™s a fun challenge for youā€”can anyone spot a tiny bit of Olivia in the last photo? She fought her way back inside before we even made it out with a camera because, in her words, ā€˜absolutely not.ā€™

āœØ Glendaā€™s One-Year Anniversary: From ā€œMatted Messā€ to Our Good Witch āœØ

In the spirit of the recently released Wicked movie, weā€™re celebrating our very own Glendaā€”no, not Glinda the Good Witch, but our sweet and independent Glenda!

Glenda joined us in December of last year, arriving from a Tulsa shelter as a matted mess. She was found as a stray, so her past remains a mystery. But over the past year, Glenda has become a staple of our sanctuary family.

Unlike her theatrical namesake, our Glenda prefers solitude and the simple pleasures of life. Sheā€™s often found off on her own, nestled in piles of leaves, embracing the great outdoors with a quiet grace.

As we celebrate Glendaā€™s one-year anniversary with us, weā€™re reminded of the magic that comes from love, patience, and a safe haven. Hereā€™s to many more golden days for our very own Good Witch!

Say hello to Francie, the newest bundle of s***k here at Silver Paws Golden Days!

This senior Yorkie has a story thatā€™s a little complicated but full of hope. Francieā€™s family adopted her from another rescue a few years ago, but they could never quite decide if they would keep her. After years of back-and-forth, they ultimately returned her, and thatā€™s when we got the call. ā€œCan you take her in?ā€ One look at her cute little face, and how could we not say yes?

Francieā€™s already settled in like sheā€™s been here forever, charming us with her sass and undeniable cuteness. But, like most seniors, she has some health hurdles ahead.
First up is a senior blood panel ($120) to make sure sheā€™s on the right track. And those teeth? Theyā€™ve done their jobā€”sheā€™ll likely need a full dental with all her teeth removed, estimated at $500+.

Hereā€™s where you come in: Will you help us give Francie the care she needs to thrive? Whether itā€™s a one time donation or joining our monthly giving program for as little as $5 a month, we need your help!

As a monthly giver youā€™ll become a part of our Pawsie, youā€™ll receive weekly updates and access to a private community. Youā€™ll get to continue being a part of Francieā€™s story and see how your generosity helps herā€”and others like herā€”live their best golden days.
