Charlie the Aussie has been working with us on a couple forms of leash reactivity for the last few months. He was experiencing fear based reactivity towards unknown humans and experiences frustration based reactivity towards dogs he wants to say hi to! When we started he could be 300+ft away from another dog and he would go ballistic, lunging and barking at the end of his leash. Here he is today, walking with old man Tech! We also saw a runner, a family walking with a stroller, and a cyclist that he was able to take in stride without issue. Proud of this kid and his guardian!
2 of the things we're working on with Apollo is his jumping on people he is comfortable with and him going out the front door when packages are being picked up. He's doing great!

Today we worked with client dog Teddy on his excitement/frustration based reactivity. Teddy LOVES other dogs and does everything he can to get to them including barking and lunging at the end of his leash. Today he remained calm the entire session.

What do you feed your dogs?
What do you feed your dogs for the main meals day to day? Zach feeds his boys Pet Wants, which is a small batch kibble company. He started using this brand when one of his dogs was having tummy issues with another brand and wouldn't consistently eat. After making the switch they had no more issues and eat with gusto!
Junior trainer Jessi feeds her boys Wholesomes Pet Food - 2 of her 3 dogs had gut health issues with other foods, but switching to Wholesomes whitefish formula fixed them right up!

Just doing some fun and random behavior chains with my boy Nugget.
Took Maple out to Home Depot for the first time today. She did great. When we first started our field trips she would take 20-30min to acclimate to the environment enough to train. Today in this brand new environment it took her 7.5min. She was definitely nervous at first, but she was curious and not scared of the unknown humans, offering check-ins, responding to cues, and walking with a loose leash like a champ.
This Premack recall exercise is a powerful way to work on your dog's recall away from things they are interacting with. Charlie did amazing with this exercise yesterday!
Maple did great today at Hobby Lobby on her day training field trip. She's doing great to generalize her skills when she's in a confident and safe head space and she's built her confidence around people to a point of consistent curiosity. We went to PetSmart after this and she had a lot more trouble because she was so scared by the scent of other dogs (very frantic flight-y behavior and wouldn't eat any food) but we will get her confidence built in those dog-dog scenarios too. She had a great session with my old man Tech yesterday in her neighborhood, so I am confident we can help her build confidence around unknown dogs in public settings. We just have to listen to her and take things at her pace!
Having trouble wrangling your long line? Here's a little hack to make your life easier!
Abi did great during her training session today! She has a history of growling at and showing other reactive behaviors towards dogs who get close to her and today she was able to have Tech within 10ft. She was also comfortable enough to take multiple opportunities to sniff him. We also did some side by side walking and passing drills and instead of being worried about Tech she was curious and wanted to check him out some more. Great progress for this dog nervous girl!
Miss Maple is building confidence and generalizing her skills out in public! Proud of this big pup!
Flashback Friday: left turn leash lesson with Lumos! (Say that 5 times fast ๐ถ)
Miss Maple is doing well on her training field trips! She's got some confidence to build around all the hustle and bustle, but we're going at her pace, letting her soak in all the things when she needs to, and making things easy for her to rack up a lot of wins.
Maple being a goofball this morning before we started our session! She's such a fun pup!
Meet Charlie the Rottie! Charlie and her mom are training with us to help Charlie keep her feet/butt on the floor when greeting guests or getting pet. She loves saying hi to people so this is really hard for her. But by training with some clear rules and a specific cue that tells her when she can go say hello, she's making quick progress!
Meet Tiny the Rottweiler, an EDT alumni! In this video, Tiny is getting some energy out with a homemade โpuzzle boxโ. Want to make one of your own? Hereโs what youโll need:
A cardboard box ๐ฆ
5-6 hand towels ๐พ
1-2 cups of kibble ๐ฆด
Roll kibble up into the towels, cram those towels in a cardboard box, and seal it shut. You can also add packing paper or make it harder for your dog by using multiple smaller boxes inside the big box. ๐ถ Then let your dog have at it! This is a great option for dogs who like to shred toys or โdestuffโ them. Puzzle boxes allow your dog to use their problem solving skills and to engage both their nose & brain!
