Service dog, Cary 🦮 (a favorite ☺️) out working alongside her veteran! 🇺🇸 She is a service dog for PTSD/anxiety And depression. She is very good at her job. Super thankful to be able to help improve her veteran’s daily life.

Cary was posted on Craigslist after she delivered a litter of puppies because she was no longer useful to the people she lived with, so Belles Buds Rescue reached out and was able to save her!! Thank goodness for them. She is the sweetest! 🫶🏼🐾

Chloe the service dog 🦮 update!

Chloe is training to become a mobility service dog!

She is a beautiful 2 year old rescue pup who is making a big difference in this world!

I always say “the dog knows.” They know who their person is, and Chloe is no different. She is so calm, gentle, loving, and understanding. It’s very clear she knows who her person is and what her job entails!

Beyond blessed to be a part of a beautiful life changing journey for Chloe and her future handler! 💜🐾

🌟LETS TALK🌟

It’s been awhile since I’ve posted a topic of discussion, mostly because taking the time to put my thoughts to paper has been secondary to our very busy life 🤣

However, trends in what I’m seeing often prompt a post, and so todays topic is one that may cause some controversy but it’s something I firmly believe

YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR DOG COUNTS FOR FAR MORE THAN ANY AMOUNT OF TRAINING

What this means is MUTUAL RESPECT is necessary between you and your dog. You’re not dominating your dog into compliance, but in the same token whatever behaviors you allow, excuse or ignore are what will continue.

While any good trainer can teach and set healthy boundaries, much like with children (and people in general) the boundaries must be ENFORCED at home- and that means ALL of the time, not just some of the time.

If your dog is succeeding at the trainers the good news is that means the desired behaviors and results are possible. But that also means you must do the work to keep the consistency.

Some dogs are easier than others. Some see training as a new way of living and it takes months or years for reinforced behavior to slip. However some, and usually the more intelligent dogs, figure out quickly where the holes are and will use them to their advantage. Not because they are mean or manipulative- but because they’re animals and life and context for them are very black and white.

Your dog must respect you in order to want to make decisions to please you instead of negative or impulsive behaviors that are self rewarding. To get your dog motivated to work for praise alone and not just treats or toys, you must respect your dog so there is trust. There is a very important balance that is often overlooked when looking at the quality of a dogs obedience.

EVERY SINGLE INTERACTION WITH YOUR DOG IS EITHER ENCOURAGING OR DISCOURAGING A BEHAVIOR. When you start looking at your time with your dog in this context, you become more intentional in building your relationship, which makes the training part easier.

You’ll do the work either way. Make it count.

Who’s heard me say it?! 👇
With all due respect, your dog deserves to be treated as a dog!

Dogs are dogs. They're not fur babies. They're not children. They're dogs.

That doesn't mean I don't love my dogs. It doesn't mean you can't call them your "kids" or "fur children." But for their sake, respect that they are dogs. Treat them well, but treat them as they should be.

People humanizing dogs is actually what's getting a lot of them put down, rehomed, dumped, and loaded with behavioral issues.

The best way to honor and love your dog is to respect the fact that they are different from us. That's part of what makes them so amazing!!

Bringing home a new dog and giving it whatever it wants, whenever it wants, is not setting them up for success. It may feel good to "spoil" them. I get it, but what you're actually doing is creating a brat.

I hear this often: "My dog bit our friend on the couch because he thinks the couch is his." OK, who let them think that? The dog didn't just waltz in and claim your couch. The dog wasn't given boundaries to begin with. I let my dogs on the couch, but if I tell them to get off and go to their bed, they will without hesitation. They've earned that privilege based on respect, trust, and understanding.

If you want to "spoil" your dog, do it by setting them up for success. Exercise them, give them boundaries, give them a job, and give them what they actually need instead of the latest squeaky toy. The time you spend playing with your dog means more than the toy itself.

Love your dog. Cherish your dog. Respect your dog, but for the love of the dog, TREAT THEM LIKE A DOG.

(And before anyone wants to say something silly...My dogs are my family. They literally signed my marriage certificate, but they also have boundaries. Just like any healthy family should!)
