Another update on the mystery respiratory illness. These are the updated number of confirmed cases in Washington State. So far, none have been reported in Thurston county. One of the recommendations to protect your dog is "Avoid congregations of dogs", which includes dog parks. I am not going to cancel the Hawk's Prairie dog park meetup on Saturday but please use your best judgement when deciding to go or not.

With recent reports of an unidentified canine illness increasing across the nation, the Washington State Veterinarian is encouraging dog owners to be vigilant to keep their animals safe and healthy.

Happy Thanksgiving!

By now, you may have heard about the mystery respiratory illness going around. It IS present in Washington State. Here is some new information about it. We aren't going to change any existing events, but will focus more on walks where there is less potential for nose to nose contact going forward in the new year if this persists. Please use your own discretion when choosing if and when you will come to events (including, and especially, those outside of the Adventurewiener (TM) Dachshund Club - Seattle/Washington Chapter ).

It seems that the canine illness is caused by “a funky bacterium” that’s never been seen before —- and doesn’t even have a name yet.

Hello -

I'm Jessica and I took over the group for Katy a few months ago. You may remember receiving an email from me and Katy at that time.

I'm the organizer of the Adventurewiener Dachshund Club, a club for all of Washington State, although events are concentrated in Western Washington. I'm also the author of the blog You Did What With Your Wiener? (https://youdidwhatwithyourweiner.com/)

When I said I would keep this group going, Katy and I discussed the additional workload for me and agreed it was acceptable to combine this group with my current group.

Although I will continue to host a monthly event in the Olympia/Tacoma/Lacey area, my plan is to sunset this Meetup group at the end of March 2023.

Hi Everyone. I had a lot of fun attending the Lacey meetup on September 10th. Thanks to the couple people that filled me in on the group history and prefrences.

I've heard you all that having meetups at 2 pm in the summer is not the best choice because it is too hot. I was just leaving the events as-is for now because I thought you had always met at the same place at the same time and didn't want to make too many changes at once. But I hear that meetups used to be at 11 am in the summer so I will make a similar switch next summer so we can avoid the heat.

Also, I know that hanging out a dog park is preferrable to some but not to others. I will be changing the meetups a little so be sure to check the events schedule regularly (in the meetup group).

In fact, I changed the event on November 12th at 2 pm to meet at the Chamber's Bay dog park in Tacoma.

Expect that the rest of the events will remain at 2 pm at Hawk's Prarie dog park through the winter but more changes will be coming next spring.

Speaking of the meetup group, please remember to join the "new" one below. I need to consolidate my efforts now that I have taken over organizing events for this group so eventually that is the only place the Olympia/Lacey events will be posted.

We lost our precious Maggie yesterday. It was sudden and unexpected, but at least I know her suffering was short lived. That doesn’t relieve the empty spot in my heart that I know can never be filled. Maybe with time a little healed over. Maybe…we’ll see. I couldn’t have asked for a better, sweeter companion. I have no other words, just hurt and tears.

IMPORTANT GROUP CHANGES

This is Jessica. I took over managing this group for Katie a couple of months ago. As some of you may know, I've organized a large Dachshund meetup group in Washington - the Adventureweiner Club - for 10 years.

Before I agreed to take over this group, I discussed the future of the club with Katie. I plan to continue the Lacey dog park meetups for the most part but please pay attention to the club events calendar because I may switch it up a bit. I plan to change some of the meetups to walks and at different locations.

Also, Katie and I discussed the additional work on my part to organize two separate groups on Facebook and Meetup. My goal is to eventually have you all join my main Dachshund club on meetup, and the associated Facebook group, so that everyone has access to the same information and I don't have to double, or tripple, my efforts to get everyone together.

So this is your first notice that this group will close at the end of December 2022. That includes this meetup group and the Wiener Dogs of South Sound page.

It was great to see a small group at the off-leash park yesterday! I was so busy talking, I forgot to take any photos! There were new people/pups (little Sailor who was so shy at first!) and repeat members as well as at least one couple who happened to be just visiting the park. See you all next month!

UPDATE!
PERMANENT Old Dog Haven FOSTER HOME FOUND!

(in W. Washington state or Portland, OR only):

Extremely handsome miniature dachshund, currently a little overweight at 14 pounds. He is an intact male. This old guy has smelly teeth and a big heart murmur which may mean we can’t neuter or fix his mouth. We'd like to find a quiet home where he has another senior dog (or 2?) to buddy up with.

UPDATE: He's in a shelter foster home, while we search for an Old Dog Have home to send him to. His shelter foster has reported now he is willing to walk on leash – slowly, with lots of sniffing as befits an elderly fellow, but willing.

Sorry for the delay, but here are a few photos from our last Meetup which was a joint venture with Adventurewiener (TM) Dachshund Club - Seattle/Washington Chapter and a walk around Capitol Lake. It was a bit chilly and a little misty, but most of us made it all the way around. Maggie and I were a bit slow at the end of the pack, so didn't get any photos of us walking. Lots of fun - we should do this again!

Just a reminder about our upcoming Meetup: We are having a joint Meetup with Adventurewiener (TM) Dachshund Club - Seattle/Washington Chapter here in Olympia. They are more of a walking group, so we are going to meet at Marathon Park at Capital Lake. The time is 2pm, March 12th and we'll gather in the park, towards the trail for 10-15 minutes before we head out as a group. Our plan is to do the loop around the lake (approx. 3.6 mi) but feel free to turn back at any point if you don't wish to go all the way around. I'm bringing Maggie's stroller because she can get slooooowwww.
