“Pillow Red-breasted Sapsucker”

I took this red-breasted sapsucker image at McLane Creek Nature Trail in Olympia, WA. I noticed the girdling on some trees and waited to see if any sapsuckers were actively using the area. A sapsucker appeared and landed on the tree after a short 10-minute wait. A second sapsucker soon appeared. The birds were going back and forth between the trees and a nest site on the other side of the pond every 5 to 15 minutes.

I have a love affair with Great Blue Herons and this is one of my favorites images. I took this picture as I was walking along the Anhinga Trail in Florida’s Everglades National Park. This heron posed regally among the reeds. I am particularly fond of the feather detail.

This image was taken at Rialto Beach along the wild north coast of Washington State. The grandeur of the ebb and flow of the crashing waves always fills my soul with awe. I love this beach. I particularly like how the shoreline is shrouded in fog.

This image represents to me the essence of Juneteenth or Freedom Day. June 19, 1865 is the day when federal troops freed the last slaves in Galveston Texas. The waves represent the joys, trials and tribulations of the march toward freedom; a march that we are still on today. The title of the image, “The Rolling Sea,” comes from the end of the first verse of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” the Black national anthem. “Let our rejoicing rise, high as the listening skies. Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.”

I see this as a large metal or gallery-wrapped canvas print.

Pictured: "Tundra Swans in High Key"

These tundra swans, at Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge, presented a photographic problem. The sun was almost directly overhead and the light was bright and contrasty. I loved the composition of the swans and so had to take the picture. What I did was to deliberately overexpose the image so that the swans appeared to be floating on a white background. There are just enough shadows to indicate the location of the water. This technique is called high key photography and has become one of my favorite photographic tricks.

This photograph looks best as a large gallery-wrapped canvas print. It is available in the Gift Shop as a card, tote bag or pillow.

"Locked Talons"

Seabeck, WA is my favorite place to take pictures of the interactions between Bald Eagles. Bald Eagles and Great Blue Herons congregate at Seabeck from mid-May through mid-June to take advantage of Midshipman fish spawning. This image is one that I have been trying to capture for years. I was so excited when I realized that I had locked focus on the eagles fighting over the fish.

Pictured: “I've Got It!”

This image was taken at Seabeck WA during the annual Midshipman spawning. This eagle performed a touch and go as it swooped in to grab the fish and then continued its trajectory back into the sky. I like the curve of the eagle as it is rising from the water.

I see this as a medium sized metal print.
