We have a special name for those of you who are more than fans of the Zoo. A name that reflects all of the love and dedication they’ve shown for the Zoo over the years—Zoo Parent!

After countless visits and memories, the animals here have become part of the family. So, quite frankly, it’s time to make it official.

Do so online today:

• Zoo Parent: https://www.bonfire.com/zoo-parent/
• Zoo Daddy: https://www.bonfire.com/zoo-daddy/
• Zoo Mama: https://www.bonfire.com/zoo-mama/

Show off your Zoo pride and support for the animals, their conservation and our mission. Because it’s not all about scooping poo. (Though that’s important stuff, too!)

Thank you for being a part of our Zoo Family!

*Only available until Friday, June 17. Zoo Daddy, Zoo Mama and Zoo Parent designs are available in a premium unisex tee, women’s slim fit tee, pullover hoodie, crewneck sweatshirt and youth unisex tee.

Can't wait to see you at the Zoo!

The 2022 amphibian conservation season officially began with the production—and late last week—the transport and release of 1,500 Puerto Rican crested toad tadpoles to the reintroduction site of La Esperanza, located in north central Puerto Rico.

In the Zoo’s Amphibian Conservation Area, a five-year-old male born in our care was bred with an eight-year-old female from the wild. Both were cooled down to 66 degrees Fahrenheit to simulate a Caribbean "winter" for 29 days before they were introduced and being introduced for breeding.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) recognizes the Puerto Rican crested toad as a critically endangered species.

Our Zoo has been working with this species since 1998. This recent event brings the Zoo's current total of Puerto Rican crested toads released to the wild to more than 80,000. These toads included, the Amphibian Conservation Area has now released more than 112,000 amphibians to the wild.

Ready for the weekend—and the official start of our summer season! We've been hard at work preparing for this very moment. Here's what you can expect to see:

📍 We’re in the final stages of installing 47 touchscreen kiosks throughout the Zoo to help offset the shortfall in our labor force. No employees were displaced. In fact, we’re still hiring in all areas! Apple online: www.omahazoo.com/workhere

🎫 Many of the kiosks are already available for purchasing admission tickets, rides tickets and wristbands, as well as placing food orders at some of our concession areas.

💳 Kiosks accept credit cards only. They do also accept Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium gift cards. Cash sales remain on a limited basis.

⬇️ When using the kiosks, discounts can be applied to eligible ticket and food purchases for Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium members and employees by scanning your member card or entering your member number and last name.

🌳 The Howard and Rhonda Hawks Plaza, located in front of the Desert Dome, is now open for families to gather and stay cool. It features an all-new look with more seating, more shade and landscaping, and opening soon, the renovated and renamed Plaza Café. The façade of the Lozier Giant Screen Theater was also given a facelift.

💦 Alaskan Adventure will open, daily weather-permitting, with a new entrance, even more space to accommodate strollers and more seating with shaded structures, so families can be much closer to their children at play.

☀️ A Sundries Station, the Dockside Shop, has been added with kiosks to purchase rides tickets. Gift merchandise and amenities, such as beach towels, sunscreen, sunglasses and misting fans.

🎠 Sue’s Carousel, which was installed more than 20 years ago, will reopen in a new location, still near Alaskan Adventure, after having been refurbished. It will dawn a new entrance and covered structure, as well as improved accessibility for wheelchairs. Families can also see around the entire circumference as their children ride.

In light of Endangered Species Day last Friday, we’d like to raise a little awareness about a couple other wonderfully rare species, which continue to make a significant impact—our visitors and our staff.

With the help of our gift shop employees, YOU raised about $51,000 for conservation in 2021 through your conservation button purchases ($1 per button) made in the Zoo’s Main Gift Shop.

You may not have realized it at the time, but you truly made a difference. And you did it during a time when help was needed more than ever.

The Zoo’s Conservation Committee worked together with our team of animal curators to identify conservation projects in need. Of what was raised, the funds were spread across each of the 16 organizations.

✔️ HARCC-Honduras Amphibian Rescue and Conservation Center (amphibians)
✔️ Fins Attached Marine Research And Conservation (sharks)
✔️ Giant Armadillo Project - Priodontes maximus (armadillos and anteaters)
✔️ Little Fireface Project (lorises)
✔️ Project Anoulak (hornbills, langurs, gibbons, otters, etc…)
✔️ Botswana Lion Corridor Project (lions)
✔️ Snow Leopard Trust (snow leopards)
✔️ Rowe Sanctuary (cranes)
✔️ VulPro (vultures)
✔️ SANCCOB saves seabirds (South African coastal birds)
✔️ Mabula Ground Hornbill Project (hornbills)
✔️ World Parrot Trust (parrots)
✔️ Namibian Conservation of Coastal Birds (NAMCOB; associated with SANCCOB and African Penguin SAFE)
✔️ Monarch Watch (butterflies)
✔️ Monarch Joint Venture (butterflies)
✔️ ARCAS (wildlife trafficking)

Derek Benson, our lead amphibian conservation keeper, will be taking over to share what’s going on behind-the-scenes in the Zoo’s Amphibian Conservation Area, from the population assurance colonies in the Zoo’s care to the critical work the keepers do to keep the critically endangered amphibians in those colonies thriving.

Comment below if you'll be tuning in (or maybe you've already been watching)!

Western lowland gorillas are one of four known subspecies of gorilla. They are characterized by their slightly smaller size, their brown-gray coats, auburn chests and locally, the species housed here at the Zoo.

The other subspecies in existence are the cross river gorilla, the mountain gorilla and eastern lowland or Grauer’s gorilla.

Happy National Go Birding Day! Dan Cassidy, our vice president of animal management and resident bird-watching pro, shares what all birders have in common and we think you’ll have one too—a list. Dan has traveled to different countries and has explored the United States to check the boxes on his “life list,” made up of birds from around the world, but also his “American Birding Association list,” with North American birds.
