Feline Fact (& Fun) Friday
MEOW! Do you talk to your cats like you understand their meows perfectly? Of course you do, all cat owners speak “meow”. 😸
Cats meow as a way to communicate with people, not cats. Yes, you read that right; adult cats do not communicate with other adult cats by meowing as a normal way of communication.
When do cats meow then if not to talk to each other? When they need to ask for things, say hello, demand attention or tell us when something is wrong. Kittens will meow to tell their mothers they are cold or hungry, but as cats grow they stop meowing at each other.
Why do cats meow at us then? And how do they talk to each other? Cats communicate mainly with body language, they will at times yowl at one another. Cats probably see us as helpless, furless kittens and meowing is how they need to communicate to kittens aka us, humans.
Cats also learn they can train us, and meowing gets people to do what they want. Remember we know what our cat’s meows mean? It’s because they learn early on that specific meows get them certain things, so they continuously repeat those exact meows at us to get the same results. What happens if a meow doesn’t get the desired effect they were hoping for? They change their meowing technique and style.

Primordial Pouch
Feline Fact (& Fun) Friday
The infamous primordial pouch. You know that little paunch that just kind of hangs there or swings when your cat trots around? All cats have a primordial pouch but they vary in size and could be undetectable.
No, it’s not your cat’s actual tummy, nor is it a side effect from getting your cat spayed. This bit of fur and fat is a protective layer and is completely normal and healthy.
So what is it exactly???
The primordial pouch, firstly, helps protect cat’s internal organs from a fight by adding an extra layer from claws or teeth.
Secondly, primordial pouches help cats move faster. As cats run it stretches, gives them extra flexibility and the ability to go farther with every bound they make. These qualities help cats catch prey or evade predators.
Primordial pouches aren’t unique to domestic cats, big cats have them as well, so the pouch is extra space for storing food after a big meal, this is especially important for cats in the wild since they eat when they can.
