We are sharing 150 stories in 150 days as we count down to our 150th birthday celebrations. Today's story is from Donetta, which includes mention of the passing of her pet.

We want to highlight Donetta's story about Bindi while also mentioning the NHS Pet Loss Support Group. That group meets on the first Tuesday of each month (tomorrow), requires no registration and is completely free of charge. It's something done for people who may just need a kind ear while going through the difficult loss of a pet.

Here is Donetta's story:

"This is our precious Bindi. She blessed our home in 2013. I saw her precious face on the Nebraska Humane Society website and fell in love instantly.

My husband, who loves animals, fell in love the moment I shared her photo. We went and adopted her the same day. She graced us with her love and gentle presence for eight years. Always loving, never growled - not even to strangers. She was the light of our entire world.

Sadly, she began to display signs of confusion or forgetfulness, and began experiencing pain. We knew that it would be hard to say goodbye, but our sweet girl was suffering. We made the heartbreaking decision to say goodbye. My husband lovingly built her a special little casket box lined with soft felt. We spent one last day with her. On June 19, 2021, we said goodbye to our precious girl. Bindi, you will always be a part of our home and you will forever be loved."

We are sharing 150 stories in 150 days as we count down to our 150th birthday celebrations in August. Today's story is from Joi:

"After the passing of my dog, I wasn't sure when or if I would ever be ready again to adopt another dog. The loss of a pet is an unexplainable feeling.

Being a big animal lover, I knew I couldn't go without being around dogs. I decided to volunteer and help foster, but it didn't work well with my work schedule. The Barks and Rec Program had more flexibility to help an animal in need. In late March 2024, I participated in the program. I completed the matchmaking survey not realizing at the time it would be the perfect pup match.

It was overwhelming taking home a lab mix, who I named Viggo, who is filled with excitement and joy. What was meant to be a weekend hang to take a break from the shelter turned into over a week as Viggo healed from kennel cough and surgery. Out of all the family dogs I owned, I've never had a dog smile at me, teeth and all. It was then I realized I didn't have the heart to return this sweet pup to the shelter and made the decision to adopt last spring on April 12, 2024. So glad there is program like Barks and Rec!"

We've been saying all along that Camp Kindness is the GOAT summer camp experience in Omaha.

Before, that was just an opinion. Now, it's inarguable. Thank you so much to Shepherd’s Rest Goat and Sheep Rescue for making this possible. The kids (and staff) had a blast!

We are sharing 150 stories in 150 days as we count down to our 150th birthday celebrations in August. Today's story is from Erica:

"We had recently lost our Husky mix named Blaze, and our hose felt empty without a dog. We saw Sparkles (NHS Molly) on the website and had to meet her.

She was very shy, and they didn't know much about her as she was picked up as a stray. We came prepared with tears in our pockets.

At first, she wasn't sure what to do. She also didn't know how to play with toys. Then she went over to my husband, sat next to him and looked up at him. He said "I love her! We're taking her home."

We gently helped her get over her fear. She was afraid of so many things. Being outside, birds, planes, car doors closing. Now, four years later, she's is able to go outside and potty by herself. She is also a PRO at playing with toys. She especially loves balls, and I find her every night when I get off work waiting at the back door with her favorite ball so we can play in the yard.

We still have some reactivity challenges, but she will always be loved and safe in our home."

This good girl loves chasing toys during playtime as much as she loves taking treats gently and cuddling.

We are sharing 150 stories in 150 days as we count down to our 150th birthday celebrations. Today's story is from Amanda:

"I first saw Benny at NHS on Sept. 14, 2019.

When walking up to his kennel, you immediately noticed the hot pink stitches lining where his right eye would be. His chart indicated that he was 10 years old and came in as a stray. The vet staff ended up having to remove his eye due to damage it sustained, likely in a fight.

The next day I went back after convincing my dog-loving parents to let me take him home. Benny was the first animal I ever personally adopted. His s***k (and obsession with food) quickly became apparent. Benny saw me through the remainder of high school, throughout college, and we even moved out of my parents’ house together. He was there for me through all the ups and downs of navigating adulthood.

Unfortunately, Benny’s health took a turn for the worse in the summer of 2024, and I had to say goodbye to my best friend. I miss him every day and truly feel like I lost a part of myself.

Benny inspired my love for the animals that often get overlooked. So, when I feel like I am ready to adopt another animal, I will be leaning toward an older and/or disabled individual.

I’ll always be so thankful to NHS for bringing me my one-eyed wonder."

Imagine - it's a calm Thursday morning in late spring. You've decided to go for a little stroll - after all, you don't have any real responsibilities. You find a nice warm patch of concrete and seize the opportunity to soak up some sunshine, and maybe even take a little bit of a snooze. The birds are chirping, the breeze feels nice, and the world is your oyster!

And then they come for you. Your bout of freedom has come to an end. It was nice while it lasted. Let's be real though, you're glad to be home. There weren't nearly enough snacks out there! Oh also, you're a lizard.

Today we're throwing it back to May 16th 2013, when Animal Control and Bellevue Police responded to a call about an "iguana" in the road. The iguana in question turned out to be a bearded dragon named Puff that had wandered from his home. Puff was unscathed after his time on the lam, and his owner was able to bail him out the same day. Not your everyday fugitive!

Fireworks can be scary. Plan now to help avoid disaster later. Check that collars are secure, tags are on, microchips are updated and gates are closed.

To best help your pets, practice putting on thunder jackets now and check with your vet to see if anxiety medication is needed. Burn extra energy during the day. At night, find a quiet room with high value treats and calming music.

Thank you to our friends at Lost Pets of Omaha Area for all they do all the time, especially this time of year!
