Today Pip and I went to her appointment with neurology. It was difficult for Pip to tell people her name and other pertinent information that they check repeatedly in an appointment. The aphasia is one of our biggest struggles right now. I absolutely love her neurologist. He's got a great way to explain things not only for me to understand but to try to help Pip understand. He is very very personable.

Multiple step instructions such as hold your hand out to the side and tap your pointer and thumb together or with your eyes closed touch your nose were impossible for her today. He did say that's not abnormal. I told him about her attempt a fall episode where it felt like her whole body was shaking and her dizzy spells (of which we have had a couple tonight). He put them down in his notes and didn't dismiss any of my other concerns like the shaking of her limbs.

I saw for the first time her first brain scan and then the brain scan that came with today's appointment. Her first brain scan was terrifying as a mom to see especially as he explained it. The first scan showed multiple white spots which were spots where she was bleeding and or spots that blood had pooled on her brain. There were a lot of them. Her brain was also so swollen you couldn't see any spaces or "wrinkles" in the brain. It had also shifted so hard to the side that the center point of her brain was hard to the right. Today's scan showed a very normal looking brain even though there is a hole in the skull where her bone flap will be put back together again. The center of the brain is back in the center of her skull and we can see "wrinkles" in the brain.

He told us that as long as the surgeon who did her initial surgery thinks the swelling is resolved enough we can put the bone flap back in. He told us that sometimes when the bone flap goes back in there is a big leap in cognition. He said there are records of that change throughout history. He also told Pip to attempt to not get frustrated as she is going through therapies that this will take months and months of rehab to get her more normal.

The brain scan from the night of the accident has the center line where the middle of her brain is supposed to be. The white on the outside isn't the bleeding or pooling areas. The white on the interior of that is the bleeding or pooling areas. The second picture is today's scan.

Home and barn walk through went well! 6 days and a different Pip who left here April 16 gets to come home. We are still trying to figure out therapies for after we leave Madonna and what our new normal will look like. She has some balance issues, lots of communication issues but we are blessed she is with us still today.

I will find out after she comes home what we owe Madonna financially. Things like her care insurance is great with but things like toiletries etc are not included in what insurance covers. Things like insurance are always difficult.

Next week I will not being doing lessons as we figure out Pips new routines and get used to having her home full time. Anyone wanting a tshirt for Pip orders are due on the 15th. I have attached a picture here.

Thank God for good horses and an amazing support system to make today possible

Today we have the Path to Discharge Meeting which is a fun way to say we met with all the specialists helping Pip.

She is knocking things out of the park physically. She does have some gait abnormalities but with everything going on I can't say I'm surprised. She also still struggles to swallow some textures. Again not surprising after everything.

OT and Speech together said she is making improvements. Finding words is very difficult for her making talking to her sometimes frustrating for all parties. I thought Beverly speak was confusing but Pip speak right now really is. She can now say her name if she gets a hint. That's weird and wow are things we hear on repeat. With OT she is working hard. Once she understands what is being asked of her she can do the task. Initiating tasks is hard and doing day to day things can also be difficult ie showering and brushing teeth. Her taste buds have changed some too.

Now I said it was a Path to Discharge meeting so tentatively they are thinking June 11 then she will start a daily outpatient routine. We have no idea what said daily routine will look like. Before she comes home we will have a trial run 24 hours in a mini apartment to make sure we are ready to bring her home. Luckily we wont need any massive home renovations just some rearrangements and we will know more on stuff as we get closer. She will need 24 hour supervision when she gets home.

The psychologist today went more in depth on the terminology and what kind of brain bleed she gave herself. She injured obviously the left hemisphere which is why the speech and balance issues are happening. She had two types of brain bleeds the biggest was a subdural the second a subarachnoid. The day they brought her in her glasco coma scale was a 3, the lowest you can go. How she's alive today is a miracle, how far she has recovered even more so.

To add to our plate this morning both Jon and I got nice hail damage all over our trucks and Mother Nature really chose violence as I was on my way to grab Beverly from school and messed up my truck. The last time I had an insurance claim was when the deer hit my Impala. It was a real streak until today. Now I have a cute little mini truck in the driveway as Sid Dillon gets the chore of making it driveable again. Damn DEF systems. The excessive rain also did huge amounts of damage to some of Jon's fields so he has replanting in the future.

Goals I'm making for myself before Pip gets home are very lofty goals. I'm hoping to have a date set for a celebration/ banquet/ graduation to help Pup. I would like to sell a couple horses to have a down payment on a SUV so it's easier for her to get in and out of. I'm hoping to feel comfortable with where she is at and where my skills are as a caretaker. I'm hoping to get the house completely organized for her too. I am really going to be decluttering to make everything more minimalist for us. And the last goal is I'm hoping to be enrolled in an Equine Assisted Learning program so I have more knowledge on how to use the horses to help her recover more. I'm also hoping to know more about our therapy costs in the next week or two and have a plan on how to pay them that doesn't just include hope and prayers.

Anyone interested in helping here is her GoFundMe page link. I'm also going to include a picture of the order form for Hooves Up for Pip tshirts.

Today Pip told the speech therapist she was sad. She couldn't and didn't go any further with that train of thought. She was up in a new chair and used a walker to go across the room. She also got her feeding tube out today. We do have to work on getting her to eat different foods. Her staples have been removed and we are working for a shift towards Madonna.

Counting today was hard, identifying objects was hard, being patient waiting for nurses was hard when she wanted out of the chair. I heard her talk nonsense to one of the doctors and the speech therapist. It was hard to keep her on track. She doesn't speak to me. I get a nod of her head or a partial shrug of her shoulders and that's it. It's difficult to hear her talk to others but not say a thing to me. I know this is all injury related but it doesn't make it easier.

I am concerned about rehab costs. I know the acute care should be covered but the out patient care might not be. I'm trying not to drown under insurance worries and worries about summer income at the farm. I think honestly the scariest part is the unknown. The unknown on what the expenses are going to be, where she will be when she comes home from Madonna, how this is truthfully affecting Beverly, and what big changes still need done. I'm attempting to look at the silver lining and I do celebrate each victory but boy do I have multiple moments where I'm not ok too.

Sister snuggles look a bit different at this moment. Thankfully we get them even if they are now in a hospital bed. Pip definitely enjoyed having her sister near by.

Pip has had improvements this weekend. She is in a different bed and on a different floor. She has started eating some simple finger foods. There is more cognitive reactions than last week and occasionally some words. We do have a visible decrease with swelling. Crossing my fingers we have more forward steps this week. Hopefully we can transfer to the rehab center soon.

05/01/2024

A little over an hour ago, 2 weeks ago, my life and truthfully the entire family's was turned upside down. Today we door dashed dinner very similar to two weeks ago and I was scared to try to eat it until after 9 pm. I was terrified some bad news was coming....I foresee therapy in the future to deal with the lingering side effects from this.
Today has been a long day of emotional highs and lows. Two weeks ago I was making decisions no one should have to make to save their child to now celebrating the fact her swallow study went well and with assistance can start a liquid diet. I went from watching my daughter on a ventilator and praying while trying to keep my p**p in a group to now trying to prevent her from alligator rolling her feeding tube or keeping her hands in their boxing gloves to prevent her from tearing out her feed tube.... again.
I've gone to equal parts celebrating her being able to hold a can of Sprite in her hand and drink a bit out of the straw and missing my daughter so much. I should be stressing out about her graduation party not stressing out about the fact my truck doesn't easily fit in the parking garage at the hospital. Yes I see small improvements every day but it's tough to see where I am today. It's hard to believe this child in the bed is my daughter when I know what she was doing hours and days before the accident.
It's hard to zip up the sides of the Posey bed for her safety as she tries to crawl out when she's agitated. Hell it's difficult to see her in the Posey bed period. I'm attempting to look forward with hope and not get bogged down by the grief of losing what I expected these last few weeks to be. I thank God every day that she is still here with us and pray for the strength to keep going forward. This unfortunate isn't something my Fairy Godmother can fix and she waves a wand and life is back to normal. This is going to be a hard road of healing.

I hate posting the GoFundMe link all the time because I feel like all I am is a beggar but honestly I don't know what our futures hold. So if you would like to help please scroll down to previous posts. Otherwise please send prayers and healing vibes. This momma is tired and in a way I can't describe.

I feel like I might be overdue for a Pip update.
She moved into a different bed this week. I laugh as I see her in her adult sized "play pen." She is much more free to move and much safer as she does so. No more worrying about hitting the left side of her head on bed rails. She has PT, OT, and speech therapy already starting even though she's not really aware of what's going on. They are trying to keep her muscles working. They did see if she is able to start chewing and by the look of it reflexively she sure can. She was eating ice chips and a bit of apple sauce today. Not able to use a straw yet. During the session her eyes did stay open but still pretty blankly staring. She was using her left arm during PT to brace herself, her right arm not so much, and she was shifting her legs to try to help. Still no communication but boy am I bugging the heck out of her trying. Keep the prayers coming they are working. Beverly has been up here a few times to see her and is not thrilled her sister isn't interacting but she is happy to see her. Anyone still wanting to help here is the GoFundMe link. This is going to be a really long stretch for recovery and one the doctors can't even guess how long it will take.

Today was difficult and heart wrenching. Pip is doing well off the ventilator. Still no cognitive abilities. This is hard because I want some kind of response any response and we are currently getting nothing.

I took Beverly up to the hospital this evening. Beverly was busy making pictures for her sister's room and reading to her sister. It's not normal but it's our new routine at least for this week. I can't say enough good things about Pip's entire team and how well they are making Beverly feel welcome.

In 17 hours everything in life can rapidly change. Last night Jon saw on Omaha Scanner a single car accident within a few miles of our house. After multiple attempts to get in touch with Pip he jumped in the truck for us to realize we were seriously living through this nightmare. Pip was extracted from her car and loaded up. She was taken via squad to UNMC and intubated while in the squad. There is nothing more horrifying then walking into the ER and saying my child is here somewhere and they take you to a consult room. The chaplain was the first person to come talk to us.
I have very little details on the accident. Her list of injuries is incredibly long.
She has a massive brain injury. They removed part of her skull to give it room to swell. They removed her spleen. She has some injuries to her liver and kidney that will heal. She has fractures on L4 and L5, a fractured hip, and her nose. She also has a terrible hair cut. This will a very very long road to recovery, months for sure.
Hug your loved ones, you never know when s**t can hit the fan.

Here is the link for Pip's GoFundMe. We are so lucky she is even alive after the car wreck last night. Thank you for the continued prayers and support.

Happy Leap Day from the boys!

02/29/2024

The weather is deceptively nice making me impatient to start summer activities! This year I'm doing summer camps in an entirely new way. They are built on themes and will be kept incredibly small (max of 4 riders) so there can be a lot of one on one time and a lot more horse time!
I have one day intro camps that are perfect for introducing brand new people to horses. I have trail camps, barrel camps, English camps, and western pleasure horsemanship camps for beginners. I also have advanced camps in equitation and ranch, trail, barrels, patterns, western pleasure and horsemanship, and trail obstacles.
Don't know what level to sign up for? That's fine we can easily discuss and find the correct level for your learner! Come join us today! Koko is hoping for lots of new friends!
