If you have been trying to get in for training or are interested in training please send me a pm.
I'm trying to work on some spots for the near future.
Nothing set in stone yet; but trying to get a list going. Trying to figure out what to do with my life just to put it out there 😂

I specialize in barrel horses, breakaway, trail horses, consignment horses, c**t starting (not really interested in one that doesn't have a brain), have experience with sorting & cutting but do not specialize in this specifically.
Horses get worked 4-6 days a week depending on what they need.

Located a few miles north of Oquawka, Illinois.

Thank you!

Remi

Working on picking up that right lead. She loves her left! This is typically what it'll look like on a horse who favors one lead over the other. Every time they pick up the wrong one, break them down into a trot, ask for the other. Also set their shoulders & bend them in a C shape the of the lead you want.
Once you get it, lope on that lead for a while. On this mare I just did a few circles. She needed the release.

Sometimes it gets really hard for them to pick up one lead or another after they've only picked up their favorite a majority of their lives. Be patient. Their muscles have to strengthen on the lead they aren't used to being on.

Sorry for the bad video quality.

"Remi" 15 yo OTTB

This is how I like to start one. Shes a very on edge horse so I do ALOT of walking with her. Walk through, trot through, attempt lope through to see what they can do. It usually falls apart, and that's okay! Running barrels is not as easy as a finished horse makes it look.

This is her first day on the barrels(with me anyway). 3rd ride for her and I together. Not sure what all this horse knows but she is pretty broke so I decided to take her thru a set. Honestly, she trots thru pretty nice like someone has done this before with her. 🤷🏼‍♀️ She really likes to pick up her left lead and not her right but going to third she switched to her right lol she just needs time
She hasn't been rode in 3 years so I'm going to take it as a win! It's the small things.

Circles 🔵

They will show you your holes in training!
Find you a fresh spot in the arena and follow your footprints over and over.

This is Calla, we're working on building up her SI again. She really lost her strength in circles whenever it got injured.

She has such a pretty cadence. You can see where she gets sticky on me though. We have a vet appointment here in a couple weeks.

Sooooo I have had training at my job and have to be out of town for quite some time. With the OK from Janna, Drake agreed to ride Bourbon while I'm gone. Luckily this is the only training horse I have in right now.

After a rocky week between the rain, tornados, and everything else they had an amazing ride yesterday with no funny business. So thankful to be able to still get this horse worked even with the annoying schedule conflicts from working. Thank you Drake & Janna for making this work!! I appreciate you guys being flexible. It really does take a team sometimes to get things done.

Spraying out the horse compartment of the trailer today.

Very important!
I try to spray it out and spray matts everytime a horse pees in there. Might seem excessive, but if you've ever had a trailer that had a floor replaced from corrosion you would understand. P*e corrods aluminum! Your matts are not protecting your floor. They actually trap that moisture. Make sure to wash them off too.

Now that I posted Mondays ride, I can post Tuesdays update!

We rode out on the trail with no issues out there in the Pines!
Only ran sideways across the yard one time 😂 I figure he don't have nowhere to go except into some trees out here and he must of thought the same.

As we all know, giving c**ts time off is not ideal but when it rains for a week straight it happens. So we restarted Monday after a few days off. Going to keep him an extra week because of this.

Here's a snip of Mondays ride on Bourbon. His bad habit of running sideways is still there, but getting more controllable.
I'm documenting this to see how it all comes out. I wonder how he'll be by the time he goes home mid-may. I'm hoping this is just a behavioral issue that will resolve with consistency.

I've had him for exactly 30 days now. Did a full c**t-restarting on him. Now for the fun part. Rides, rides, and more rides. Longer rides.

We're going to get him adjusted by the chiro and see if that helps!

Note my round pen is in fact round, the angle of my phone just makes it look square

03/28/2024

First ride out of the round pen for Bourbon. His thing is to take off sideways and run fast to try to scare us. Anyway he comes back to you eventually so it's all good.
😂 this is training c**ts.

Little video from yesterday of Bourbon!

He was a little broncy our first few minutes in the round pen but he settled nicely. If you watch closely you can see how unsure he is of things by how jumpy he is. I'd rather take my time with him and get him to trust me than to ride out a bronc and rush things.

I think he's ready to take for a ride tonight.

Since my open horse Calla was injured I got to take Shiner to town for some expos. This is his 3rd & 4th time being expod, and at a new arena!
Day 1 he got a little scared at the end of the arena.
Day 2 he was ready to haul buns into the arena and lay down a run but I made him lope thru lol he cracks me up.

03/14/2024

This is a 3 min video of working the barrel pattern on Shiner.
I was working on getting his left lead coming out of the first barrel.
This is typically how I slow work barrels:
1 trot through, 1 slow lope through, 1 faster lope through to put it all back together.

On the trot through here you see he was trying to lope so I had to slow him down. He shows that he's excited about working the pattern and wants to go fast, but I don't want that if I don't tell him to go that speed.

In the slow lope thru he misses his lead change, and then is super stiff on the second barrel. So I go thru again and trot up to the first barrel then to ensure he picks up the left lead I do a circle. I don't do this all the time but if they are having lead issues I will. This is usually where I have to break things down the most. Then I put it all back together the last lope through.

Last lope thru- he gets his lead right out of the first barrel and makes a nice pattern.

Desensitizing Bourbon to the rope & tarp.

Was pretty impressed that he didn't care about the tarp since he was funny about stepping over the hose lol
He passed the test yesterday meaning he accepted the bit, didn't care about the tarp, doesn't care where I touch him with the rope, roped his neck & belly and he didn't flinch, and didn't care about being saddled.

Today I'll rope his feet, saddle, ground drive him, get a feed sack full of something heavy and tie it on the horn, to get some weight in the saddle and try to get a reaction out of him.

*this horse is broke, I'm just restarting and trying to find holes in training to make him husband safe. It's no surprise he's flying through what takes some horses weeks, within days* I also just like to do these things because you never know what a horse is scared of, that could potentially injure you as a rider.

Took a lot to get a flinch out of Bourbon today. Not what I was expecting, as jumpy as he can be on the ground!
Only thing he bronced at was the saddle slipping from putting the weight in my stirrup 😂

Doing a exercise to quicken up feet and change leads. This horse is getting his lead change super late at the second barrel, which makes it harder for him & not so smooth for me. I also feel like when they do that their feet get so stuck that they knock it easier.
This was the first time for him. You can see his right circles are way better than his lefts which is funny because on the pattern he's the opposite.
Since this us his first time it isn't the prettiest.

Horse: Smart Shiner Bock

In my program I like to do a mix of exercises throughout the week. For example, Monday-4 mile trail ride, Tuesday-Harder drill, less time riding. (What I would consider this as)
Wednesday-Off, Thursday-Barrel racing drills, Friday-2 mile trail ride etc.

Welcome Bourbon in for 60 days.
Age: 4 yo

He is going to be a husband horse. Lots of desensitizing, trail riding, ground driving, & wet saddle pads are in his future.

Let's see what we can get done

Was a beautiful productive day!
I ran 3 miles, I am trying to do as many miles as the horses 😂

Shiner & I rode 3.5 miles.
Kota & I rode 4 miles.

Did the circle "drill" I forgot about on Shiner today, that i seen posted in Barrel Horse News!
He was already warmed up, did 10 mins walking, 5 mins trotting working on flexing nose & bending rib cage, then we went to loping and did this. He was still fresh as you can tell. This drill is nice because it is challenging enough that they have to think about it and calm down, without it being over complicated! This is this guy's first time through this kind of drill, so his pockets weren't super small like a more seasoned horses could be.

New favorite! Will post article in comments.

We didn't get to go to the barrel race to expo today, so we just did it at home!
Horse: Smart Shiner Bock
Working on:
🤍Softening rib cage coming into first
🤍Getting flying lead change after first barrel not on second barrel pocket, like in this video.
🤍Loosening up third barrel & not cutting off the pocket (we accomplished that from his previous lope through)
If there was one thing I could change about myself was how bad I was leaning coming out of third. 1 I had my weight on the outside so he wouldn't drop in and cut the pocket off, but 2 I should of fixed myself before coming out of the pocket.

Anyway! Love riding this guy.

Following your dream isn't always going to look perfect.

Some days you'll wake up before the sun just to get a ride in.
Some days you'll ride in the dark just to work on one more important detail.
Some days you'll feel like a failure.
Some days you'll be on top of the world feeling like you've done it all right.
Some days you'll win money & buckles.
Some days you'll pay for other people to win.
Some days you'll have to skip the jackpot to go to a family event.
Some days you won't have anything to do at all and wish there was a jackpot somewhere.

Some days you won't be able to work on anything at all because of the weather...
Some days you'll pull your horse out of the pasture and they'll be lame.
Some days you'll be lame yourself and not able to do much.

Some days your horse will be uncontrollable🏇
Some days he'll be the perfect angel.

No two days will ever be the same.
Even if it all feels monotonous, it isn't.
In retrospect, the bad days make the good days even sweeter.

It's OK to have a bad day, fall off your horse, want to feel like you want to throw your sucker in the dirt. But don't stay there.
Keep hoping for tomorrow.

Day 1 of conditioning work for Shiner.

I have a specific 4 week riding schedule I use to get horses legged up before we start working them after winter.
Week one is 2 miles. That goes for me jogging and the horses. 🤪

02/02/2024

Every year as I gain new followers I like to make a post about what this page is about and how I go about training horses as well as my background. So here we go:

My name is Abbey Christe (formally Myers). I'm 28 years old.

I started training horses on my own in 2017.

Prior to opening this business, I obtained my Associates Degree in Equestrian Science & Horse Science Technology from Black Hawk College.
During my time there I took 2 years worth of riding lessons specializing in western pleasure, barrel racing, c**t starting, hunt seat equitation & general horsemanship. I showed on the IHSA western pleasure team and obtained some ribbons.
During college I also did an internship with a really good cutting horse trainer and had the opportunity to lope for him at shows, and ride his c**ts.

After Black Hawk I went on to West Texas A&M and spent a year down there working on my bachelor's degree in Equine Industry & Business. During my time at black Hawk I started training c**ts on my own.

While in TX I worked for another cutting horse trainer, and a ranch where we worked cattle. As a side gig on the ranch we gave guided trail rides to beginners through the Palo Duro Canyon.

During my extensive training with horses I have learned to make everything black & white to these animals. The less grey area, the better they understand. I feel as if I have learned from some great people in the equine industry this far, and am still striving to learn new things. (Like Breakaway Roping)

When starting c**ts I aim to do things the right way. Making the right thing easy, and the wrong thing hard. That goes for any caliber of horses. I do not believe in short cuts, and try to limit any holes in a horses training from the day I get them.

In short,
I have experience with cutting, sorting, breakaway roping, fundamentals, english, ranch work, western pleasure, reining, trail riding, just to name a few.

I specialize in C**t Starting, Barrel Racing, and Fundamentals. But I am not limited to just those disciplines.
I do give lessons primarily for Fundamentals & Barrel racing.

This is just a short explanation of my experience. I would like everyone to know what my background is before they send me horses.

I currently compete competitively in Breakaway Roping, Barrel Racing & Pole Bending.

Currently, I take a very limited amount of horses to ensure I spend quality time with them.

Thank you all for considering my business. If you have any questions please ask.

I will post availability for the upcoming months here shortly.

Thanks, Abbey
