The Knobtail

The Knobtail US Captive Bred Reptiles As the name suggests, I work with various species of knobtail geckos (Nephrurus). However, don't let the name deceive you!

My current projects also include other reptiles such as dwarf monitor lizards (Odatria) and Gidgee Skinks (Egernia Stokesii). I plan on expanding with other species in the very near future as well, so please keep checking back for updates! This site is very new and is still under construction but I will do my best to have it completed within the next few weeks. Thank you for visiting! Houssam Istanbouli

One of the most popular in are Nephrurus amyae. These babies hatched out recently and it’s hard to believe that these get so massive. I believe* that these are Australia’s largest geckos, by weight, with females reaching 70+ grams. What’s your favorite Nephrurus?

Cell pic photo dump of some neat . Some produced here and some that have been raised since tiny hatchlings. Still fairly warm here in Southern California but hoping for some “cool” weather to slow things down. Can you ID them all?

gigas sown from plants that produced seeds for me this year. It’s been quite the learning process from germinating these to getting past the fragile stage. Lots of mistakes but that’s how we learn.

thomasi hatching out this evening. These lizards have been one of my favorites to keep and breed. These chubby babies are always a joy to see in the incubator. They have a habit of coming out of the egg very slowly and in very awkward positions 😂.

A very light vertebralis in the first photo with a couple of babies he sired this year. Over the years I’ve had light colored animals pop up in every species of this genus I’ve worked with. They look and some people do call them that however although it seems like it’s passed down eventually I don’t know if it’s a simple recessive gene or just phenotypic variation so I just call them . He was bred to a few really high patterned red females.

The last USCB Timon princeps of the year hatched here for me a few days ago. Amazing how small they hatch and what they turn into as adults. Adult male also pictured, not in breeding colors. They certainly do get more feisty (and more beautiful) as they grow.

I apologize for not posting more content recently, life’s been pretty busy! As the season winds down, there are just a few more gecko and lizard eggs in the incubator and possibly a late surprise from one of the live bearing species (not holding my breath 😅). Here’s a freshly hatched levis pilbarensis doing the splits in my hand. After over a decade of working with this genus, it’s still rewarding to see healthy babies hatching. Hope everyone has had/and is having a great season!

princeps babies are getting bold. It’s really entertaining to watch them hunt and take down crickets. Sorry for the poor cell phone pics but they don’t sit still for long when there’s food to be eaten.

The clutch of princeps have all hatched within a few days of eachother and are ready to get setup. 100% hatch rate which is always great. These will be stunning as they mature.

Female thomasi laid a massive (for me) 14 egg clutch today. I was in the reptile room checking on some geckos and took a peek and saw the female sleeping and deflated. We’ve been playing the game of “resetting” the nest area for a few days as this has been my experience with them but she eventually laid in the right spot and didn’t puncture any eggs. This is just one portion of the breeding process. Now onto incubation. I never count my eggs before they hatch but let’s hope to see some little ones in a couple months.

The first USCB princeps making its way out of the egg. I’ve been raising my pairs from tiny juveniles for a couple of years and the patience has paid off. Another new species for me to have successful breeding results with so I am excited 😊.

Most of you guessed the gecko in my last story correctly, Nice work!

Here are the two recently hatched .

They will go through a very dramatic ontogenetic color and pattern change as they mature. You can see adults in my previous posts.

This is a new species to hatch for me which is always exciting 😊
