Staff Appreciation Week gives us the opportunity to shine a light on the people who dedicate themselves to improving the lives of animals and the humans who love them.

Every day, they advance our mission through education, advocacy, and service. Every day, they show our community what compassion in action looks like.

We are incredibly grateful for their hard work, their resilience, and their belief in a future where all animals are treated with respect and kindness.

We had a terrific time at Hickory Grove Early Learning Center, where the children learned about kindness towards all animals and that every animal should be treated with compassion, free from suffering and harm.

In October, Clay Humane visited the Junior Humane Society at W.E. Cherry Elementary School, headed by Rebekah Harp. We led a wonderful discussion about service dogs and the responsibilities that come with pet ownership. Darrow, a retired service dog, was on-site to join in the fun! Endless tail wags to Rebekah for her tireless efforts in humane education.

Two Employees Mark 30 Years of Service at Clay Humane
Dedication is rare. Three decades of it is remarkable! ⭐

This year, Clay Humane is honoring two of its longest-serving employees, Rebecca Whitley and Lori Coleman, as they celebrate 30 years of service.

Both joined Clay Humane in 1995, when the clinic operated on a far smaller scale. Since then, they’ve witnessed — and helped lead — the organization’s growth from a modest operation into a full-service community resource for veterinary care, animal welfare, and humane education.

“They’ve been here through it all — the late nights, the tough days, and the happy endings,” said Linda Welzant, executive director of the Clay County Humane Society. Their work has helped us save thousands of animals and has helped make countless families whole. Thirty years is an extraordinary commitment.”

Over the years, Lori became known for her contributions to Clay Humane’s Pet-Assisted Therapy Program and the organization's financial aspects, while Becky specialized in daily clinic operations, ensuring the feral cat program ran smoothly, and focused on outreach to the senior community. Beyond their individual roles, both are recognized for supporting the general mission of Clay Humane and keeping this mission at the heart of every decision.

To celebrate, the Humane Society hosted a small ceremony with staff, volunteers, and the families of our honorees, during which we acknowledged their incredible milestones. Personalized tributes were given as symbols of the many furry lives touched by their work. For Lori and Becky, the milestone is less about recognition and more about reflection on a job well done for three decades.

Clay Humane continues to serve the community with many invaluable services, spay/neuter programs, and education initiatives. However, this year, the spotlight shines on two individuals whose quiet persistence has shaped the organization’s past and future.

Over the years, Clay Humane has been fortunate to forge partnerships in our mission to combat pet overpopulation. Funding for our free cat spay and neuter program is critical to its continued success, and we have been lucky enough to have the support of Florida Animal Friend since the program’s inception.

Florida Animal Friend, a non-profit organization dedicated to preventing pet overpopulation, announced the 2025 recipients of the organization’s statewide grant awards. This funding provides the opportunity for municipal and non-profit organizations to focus on no-cost and low-cost spay and neuter programs throughout Florida. Florida Animal Friend, celebrating 20 years of advocacy, awarded $756,228 to these organizations based on their applications.

Clay Humane Society was one of 24 organizations that shared in the proceeds.

“Reducing pet overpopulation and preventing the birth of unwanted pets is both critical and humane for cats and dogs statewide,” said Lois Kostroski, Executive Director of Florida Animal Friend. “We are proud to award this significant amount of funding across the state in our 20th year of operation.”

The organization’s grant funds are generated from the sale of the Florida Animal Friend specialty vehicle license plate, which features images of cute cats and dogs that highlight the spay and neuter message.

Thank you, Florida Animal Friend, for your continued support.
PLEASE order your license plate today and help save animal lives in Florida. https://floridaanimalfriend.org/
