Merry Christmas from our tree to yours

I can’t explain the gratitude I’ve felt this year with the people I have in my life and a lot of them have been clients turned friends and family.
The connections I’ve made through loving your dogs will be those I will never take for granted.

Merry Christmas and thank you ♥️♥️

🌟 **Meet Kirsty and Her Remarkable Journey with Koda and Higgs** 🌟

Hello, I’m Kirsty, and my passion for dogs has shaped my life in the most unexpected ways.

It all started with Kodama, a white little mutt who was anything but the typical playful puppy. Koda was disconnected and depressed when I first brought him home, but through patience and dedication, he became my greatest teacher and my savior.

From a timid pup who barked at men to a confident service dog, Koda showed me the transformative power of love and training. Our bond grew stronger each day, and together, we overcame many personal struggles. He showed me a new way of communicating with him as well as the dogs we encountered. He taught me to listen more and talk less. Feel more and think deeper.

Through his guidance, I discovered the immense potential in every dog and founded **Koda’s Classroom**.

But our journey didn’t stop there. We worked as a team for years, training and building the confidence of any dog we came across. Koda would fill in the gaps of communication I couldn’t quite reach and we continued to learn from each other and the clients me met. Unfortunately fall of 2019 Koda was diagnosed with bone cancer and he passed that following January, giving me one more Christmas. I was devastated and took time to readjust, unsure if Koda’s Classroom would go on at all.

Enter Higgs, my spirited Red Heeler, who joined us after a twist of fate. Despite the challenges and energy, Higgs has become an incredible service dog in training and a testament to the positive reinforcement techniques we champion. He brought me new experiences and expanded my curiosity, working with new mentors, learning more in depth methods and constantly longing for further education.

With over 15 years of experience and a background in zoology, sociology, psychology, and animal sciences, I’m dedicated to helping you and your dog achieve the same incredible bond. At Koda’s Classroom, we offer compassionate, effective, and personalized training solutions that focus on building strong relationships and understanding your dog’s unique needs.

Join us on this journey to unlock your dog’s full potential and create a happy, well-behaved companion for life. 🐾

It’s not what you think

HU***NG HOUNDS - It’s not always what it seems

Some dogs do and some dogs don’t, but if you have a dog that humps at the most inopportune times it can be downright embarrassing or annoying.

Other dogs, other people, visitors, toys, cushions, furniture, anything that can be mounted and clung to may be fair game.

As people, it’s natural to assume that this behaviour is of a sexual nature, that our dogs must be oversexed, sexually frustrated or the all-too-common incorrect belief that our dogs are just trying to be “dominant” or “the alpha”.

Hu***ng, like many other dog behaviours does not always have a simple reason. It can be a complex behaviour which is usually emotionally or socially based.

Looking at what may be triggering the behaviour should always be the first step before finding ways to change a behaviour.

The solutions will depend on the cause. It may be finding ways to reduce stress or anxiety levels, increasing mental stimulation, teaching calm behaviours to prevent over arousal, ensuring your dog is getting enough sleep, using management or in some cases a veterinary check up to rule out any medical causes.

When hu***ng is annoying another dog or person or causing frustration, discomfort or harm in any way, then obviously this behaviour needs to be immediately addressed, but sometimes we may need to ask ourselves – is it really something we need to stop our dogs from doing just because we see it as socially unacceptable?

Is it a harmless way of relieving stress or anxiety after a difficult day or a way to expend pent up energy that is not causing anyone harm?

Is a little hump now and then okay if it’s not causing any harm?

If we prevent this, correct it, or at worst punish this behaviour are we removing a harmless natural outlet and risking another unwanted behaviour taking its place?

Hu***ng is one of the most misunderstood behaviours.

Very often, behaviour is not about the way it looks, but the way we perceive it from our human perspective.
