Dog training isn’t needed because dogs are ā€œbadā€ or broken.

It’s needed because the world we ask them to live in is nothing like the one they evolved for.

Leashes, sidewalks, crowded spaces, constant stimulation, busy humans, limited outlets. None of that is natural for a dog, yet we expect them to handle it calmly and politely without being shown how.

Training isn’t about control or obedience for the sake of it. It’s communication. It’s clarity. It’s teaching dogs how to succeed in a modern human world.

When dogs know what’s expected, stress goes down. Confidence goes up. And life gets better for everyone involved.

Training isn’t outdated.
It’s more important than ever.

Let’s do better by our dogs.

Tethering is one of the most valuable things we can add into our reactive dog’s routine.

Simply leash your dog and tie them back to a piece of furniture or door handle- anything that’s sturdy in your house- and wait for calm. (Supervised only)

Reactivity is your dog having some sort of explosion due to a barrier— that barrier could be the leash, the fence, the front door or anything that holds your dog back.

We can prime our dogs for handling this frustration in a controlled, low-distraction environment.

At first your dog will fuss. They’ll pace and bark and whine. But we will simply wait for calm each time before rewarding or releasing them. Over time, they’ll fuss less and less and eventually go strait to calm.

Reactivity training starts in the house. Most reactive dogs I meet are never crated or tethered in the house. They’re free to do what they want when they want, so the only time they’re restrained is on a walk (leading to frustration).

Practice this restraint in the house first where habits start and gradually increase distractions.

I’ve had 3 conversations in the past 2 days with owners of reactive dogs…

Here’s what they all have in common:

1. They aren’t crating or tethering their dog in the home

2. They tighten up on the leash and have their dog sit or rush past the trigger while their dog stares and barks

3. They don’t have clear communication- no markers & no understanding of leash pressure

This isn’t a coincidence, it’s a recipe for reactivity.
