Meet River ✨

He’s the Mal we just rescued from a shelter in LA and he’s been teaching me A LOT.

While our journey might look a little different than your typical rescue case, here are my tips for bringing home a rescue dog to ensure they have a safe + calm transition into your life.

Since River has been sick, we’ve been extra cautious about him interacting with our dogs or any other dogs, and this is often overlooked by owners. Any rescue dog has the potential of carrying illness, so until you’re 100% sure they aren’t sick- keep them quarantined.

He’s also taught me the importance of things like boundaries from the get go- because he wasn’t feeling well, we allowed him to sleep outside of the crate when he didn’t feel like going in. Now that he’s feeling better, he’s learned that he can push us around to not go in- something that could have been prevented if we set boundaries right away.

We are also lucky that he’s a biddable dog, but if he weren’t we would be careful not to ask too much of him right away out of fear of pushing him to use aggressive behaviors- which I’ve seen happen with rescues.

So for now, we’re simply coexisting until we understand each other before we start training.

I also have no idea of his back story- but it doesn’t matter. All that matters is he’s safe and we’re moving forward. Forcing your dog to play the victim will only limit their potential.

I love this dog- but I understand treats and affection alone aren’t what he needs. He needs a leader, an advocate, and a teacher. And that’s what I’ll be for him until we find his forever home. 💛

What tips do you have for new rescue pet parents?

Why Dog trainers say no to dog Parks

1. You don’t know the other dogs there. You don’t know if they have a history of aggression or being pushy and you have no control over them or what they do to your dog.

2. People think their dogs are excited to do something, when a lot of the time they are just over-aroused. Excited does not always equal happy. Dog parks are overstimulating for a lot of dogs and that type of environment isn’t always the best.

3. Our goal with most training is neutrality. We want our dogs to be neutral around dogs, not over-aroused. This can lead to problems like barking at dogs on the walk + reactivity.

4. Dog fights happen at dog parks all the time and these fights can have a lasting impact and lead to aggression, fearfulness, reactivity, and just an overall nervous dog.

5. Dog parks are gross because we’ve all had that neighbor that doesn’t pick up after their dog and guess what, they go to dog parks. They’re a breeding ground for illnesses unless sanitized frequently.

Instead of dog parks, practice walking your dog around the dog park to teach neutrality. You can work on your obedience or your loose lead walk. You can also take your dog for a hike where there are less dogs, but still get the enrichment of sniffing around a new environment & getting exercise. Another option is to find a friend with a dog, and go for a coffee date or long walk. Teach your dog that just because there’s another dog doesn’t mean we get to rough house.

For everyone reading, share what you do instead of going to the dog park 👇🏼

✅ Instead of focusing on teaching every command or speaking to your dog in full sentences, create a clear language based on just a few words- we use YES = come to me and get your reward, GOOD = stay there and I’ll come reward you, and NO = don’t do that- a punishment or accountability is following. With just those three words and some body language, you can communicate your expectations pretty clearly without confusion.

✅ Dogs don’t walk around talking to each other. They’re reading each other through micro-movements and gestures which is why we need to bring some awareness to and practice good body language communication. Move into a dog to apply pressure, move away from them to guide them to you. Running towards your dog as you recall them is conflicting information- your verbal and body language do not align, so make sure you learn how to speak dog with your body.

✅ Accountability is your weakness and the leash will be your first line of accountability. Dog jumping on guests? Leash. Eating things off the ground? Leash. The answer is almost always put a leash on.

✅ If your dog is struggling with aggression towards dogs, let’s not race to do a focused heel outside of the dog park. Don’t bother yourself with thinking too far ahead until you’ve nailed the basics- 1. A loose lead walk 2. Crate training. Too many people get lost in the future, the dog in front of you will tell you what you need to work on first.

✅ Don’t get me wrong, research is important when it comes to deciding how you want to train your dog, but I find way too many people get stuck in the “planning + research” phase of training and don’t actually start the work needed to get better. You can watch tutorials until you’re blue in the face, but until you get your hands on the leash you won’t know what works for your dog and what doesn’t. The best teacher is the dog in front of you.

✅ You have to learn to take your dog for who they are, accept the failures with the wins and ultimately know that their time with us is limited and you’ve got to enjoy the journey. Don’t have too high of expectations that you forget to enjoy your dog in the process of training.

After training thousands of dogs over my 6+ years as a professional dog trainer, it’s become quite clear what makes happy + fulfilled dogs.

Most dogs that struggle with behavioral issues struggle mostly because their natural needs are not being met.

Before we resort to the latest trend in dog training to solve problems, make sure you’re hitting these basics.

We did it. We just wrapped up one of the most fun, enriching, and inspiring weeks I’ve had in my career.

The Retreat was born out of a need to connect and come together as leaders in this industry. Dog training is not an easy space to navigate, and doing it alone can feel overwhelming (to put it lightly). In a space where it feels like we’re constantly tearing each other down, I wanted to create something different- something full of support, and love and all the good stuff in between.

Each of these girls (Thoma got thrown in too) were pieces of a perfect little puzzle and what made this retreat so special for me. It went far better than I could have ever imagined and for that, I’m incredibly grateful.

Serena, Zara, Bailey, Keilani, Lex, Brittney, Kass- Thank you. You are what made this experience everything for me and I can’t wait to watch you grow and be your biggest cheerleader along the way.

Over the years I’ve hosted in-person shadow programs, virtual shadow programs, consulted trainers, and led workshops and now I’ve put my most requested lessons + guidance into this 5 day retreat.

You see, there’s so much out there to help you train a dog, but so little resources on the people and business side of training dogs.

And let’s be real, you can be the best dog trainer out there but without the ability to communicate effectively with your community you’ll fall flat.

So many people have the skills, they’ve done the research. They just need the confidence to say “I’ve got this. I can help people.”

That’s why I’ve put together this retreat to help guide you to success (without the mistakes + burnout) and surround yourself with a like-minded community of passionate dog owners and trainers.

So come, join in on this journey and become the calm + confident leader this industry needs more of.

Taa daaa ✨

I now introduce to you our ✨dog training leadership retreat✨

This retreat is my baaaby. I’ve been working for some time planning this one for you, and after my last in-person shadow program, I knew just what sort of program I wanted to host.

This leadership retreat was born out of a need to address the people-side of dog training- so many of you have the practical skills needed to train a dog but the culture of dog training lacks a space that develops the interpersonal skills needed to succeed as a handler, trainer, coach, and business owner (if you’ve got one).

We all talk about how dog training is about being a leader for our dogs, but what does that actually mean? How can we show up as the cool, calm, and collected leader that we need to be for our dogs or our clients?

I gotchu.

This retreat is a 5 day escape into the beautiful desert of Joshua Tree hosted at the Cactus Moon (it’s gorgeous) by yours truly. During your stay, we’ll be covering things like effective communication as a leader, building trust in your community + online audience, how to maintain inner balance through conflict and so much more.

Not only that, you’ll be integrated into a community of like-minded, compassionate trainers and owners in the industry. This industry is not for the faint of heart but don’t worry, you don’t have to do it alone.

Whether you’re a seasoned trainer or just looking to break into the industry, this retreat will provide you with the personal development skills, experienced knowledge, and community you need to grow into the most compassionate, confident leader for yourself and the dogs you work with.

If all this sounds like your jam and you’d like to get more information, you can go to the link in my bio to schedule a call with me to chat about your goals and what you hope to take away from this program.

As always, thank you all so much for the love and support and giving me the space to host such an amazing thing.

💛 Meg

Dog trainers talk about structure… a lot. It’s one of those ambiguous words we love to throw around because it really embodies all that we do.

When I first got into dog training, I was a little confused by what this actually meant.

“Add more structure to your dog’s day.” Okay… cool. But how?

It took me a little, but I’m finally one of those trainers that throws the word around- so here’s what I think of when I think of structure…

Most owners don’t set any boundaries with their dogs. The dogs can get on the couch, sleep in bed, eat when they went, rush out the door- they do what they want, when they want. For a stable, well mannered dog that’s okay. But for the majority of dogs I meet, they don’t do too well with this much freedom.

Structure simply means giving your dog a designated thing to do, at a designated time until they show you they can make good decisions.

Crating your dog when you leave the house to keep them from destroying your house. Putting them on place to keep them from getting on the couch. Leashing them when guests come over so they don’t launch themselves at your grandma.

Anytime your dog is doing something that doesn’t jive with you, give them the structure to 1. Prevent them from doing that thing and 2. To teach them what you’d like them to do instead.

TLDR: Leash and crate your dog to give them structure in their life.

✨Hello✨

It’s a new year and I’ve finally gotten back to my favorite little corner of the internet- my podcast.

If you’ve been here for a bit, you might know how much the podcast means to me. It’s my time to chat with you in a more intimate space (sometimes IG can feel like this 👀) and gives me the opportunity to connect, un-interrupted with some of my favorite people in this industry.

I started the podcast like I did everything else- with the intention that no one would listen and I’d just be talking to myself. I think if I knew so many of you would tune in each week I may be a little more hesitant to air out all my opinions… but hey, here we are and I’m thankful.

But… transparency and honesty is what this industry needs, and that’s what I’ll continue to do (even if some of y’all come for me).

With that being said, I invite you to join me each week as I vent, rant, and over-share about all the dog training things- from working through reactivity to what it actually means to be a dog trainer.

If you’ve already caught up with all our episodes, thank you. Your support means the world to me and without it, I wouldn’t be where I am today.

If you’re not caught up, grab yourself a tasty drink (we love matcha 💚), chill out, and join me each Friday for a new episode of The Everyday Trainer Podcast.

Thanks for being here friends 💛
