Dogs Don't Come Pre-Programmed

One thing that seems to get overlooked far too often is that dogs aren't born knowing our rules. They don't automatically understand where their property boundaries are, that they shouldn't chase deer, livestock, wildlife, bicycles, or cars, or that they need to walk politely on a leash.
Training isn't optional—it's part of responsible dog ownership.
Just like children need guidance to learn what's expected of them, dogs need consistent training, supervision, and reinforcement. A dog running loose, chasing wildlife, darting into traffic, or ignoring commands isn't necessarily a "bad dog"—it's often a dog that hasn't been taught or managed appropriately.
Training is also essential for grooming and veterinary care. Dogs need to be taught to tolerate having their feet handled for nail trims, being brushed, bathed, examined by veterinarians, and safely restrained when necessary. These skills don't happen automatically. A dog that has been properly trained and socialized for grooming and veterinary visits experiences far less stress, and the professionals caring for them can do their jobs safely and effectively.
When we bring a dog into our lives, we're making a commitment to provide not only food, water, and shelter, but also the time, patience, and effort required to teach them how to navigate the world safely and confidently.
A well-trained dog is happier, safer, and more enjoyable to live with. Training isn't just about obedience—it's about setting our dogs up for success throughout their entire lives. 🐾❤️
