It's official, I'm getting an Airtag for Rohaven's collar and I'm down and out for a while. 😭

Last night just before 9:15 pm, we were hit by a car who's driver wasn't paying attention. It was confirmed by another driver that Rohaven and I had the right of way. The person who hit us did stop long enough to help us to the side of the road, but didn't stick around afterwards.

His leash, which has a locking clip and was LOCKED SHUT, came undone somehow and released him onto Main street in Oshkosh.
Thank the gods that his recall is on point, and he still had the community brain cell at the moment.

We are bruised, but otherwise unharmed. Rohaven is now a bit spooked by sirens, but it could have been worse.... It could have been so much worse for both of us... Mentally I'm burnt out, and have been all week, so I haven't exactly processed what happened to me... As my main concern was making sure Rohaven was ok...

My “day” job has been extremely demanding lately so I’ve had absolutely no time off 😭 but I figured I’d share a reason some of us go to balanced methods.
We can do everything we can with force free training and sometimes it just doesn’t work for the dog.. and that’s okay

Until a year ago, I was a trainer with a very force free approach. I didn’t believe there was a place for aversives in dog training. I didn’t have a dog that required them. Lucky me!

Until I got this chap. My very much adored kelpie, Evo. Bred to move HUGE flocks and herds of livestock out in rural Australia. A hard-headed dog, with a mega independent streak.

I worked hard with him. I’m a trainer. I laid my foundations, as I have done successfully with my other 4 dogs before him. They worked, to a point. And then, they didn’t.

I was fully prepared to give him a breed-appropriate outlet. Alongside the other work I give my dogs, I have my own sheep, meaning I can work my own dogs regularly on stock. However, my small flock of flighty sheep was far too jumpy for him to work, and he was becoming dangerous out and about in any sort of proximity to sheep.

So, you may say, just keep him on a lead! Problem solved. Well, not really.

Management can and does fail. I have heard it from countless clients. I have had it fail myself.

I also live, with sheep on my property, and surrounding it on 3 sides. Everywhere we turn, there are sheep. There’s no avoiding them.

Keep him on a lead in the garden? We have a large garden and keeping him on the lead would be unfair. He’s an incredibly active, working bred dog, who would end up spending his entire life on a lead.

We also encountered prey drive issues out and about, particularly around deer. His recall was fantastic, but once we moved, our walks were either full of deer, or sheep and he could rip a long line out of your hands to chase something particularly tempting.

So, I decided to bite the bullet and e-collar train. Controversial, particularly online.

But, the absolute best thing I ever did.

The alternative solutions I had suggested were:

Keep him on the lead - I buy good quality leads, but they have failed on me before
Move house - we’ve moved to a dream house, not an option
Avoid places with sheep etc - hard when they’re in the garden
Long line - he could still pull a long line out of reach
Train him - he was trained to a very high level and we had reached the limits via force free methods.

Management fails.

I went through the process of conditioning him properly to the e-collar. I spent ages ensuring I got it right, he understood what was expected and that he knew how to switch it off. I invested in a pricey bit of kit, and I went about it by the book.

It’s transformed his life.

He can romp around the garden, he can walk through my sheep without batting an eyelid, he can walk off lead on the hills and he can enjoy walking in the forest even when deer run out in front of us.

For him, that wasn’t ever going to be an option without it.

Nothing was more reinforcing than chasing.

And it was going to get him killed. He’d have been shot, or hit by a car, or lost. All because I wouldn’t open my mind to using different tools.

Am I suggesting every dog requires one? Absolutely not. But there are MANY cases where they save lives. It’s both saved and enriched his.

He’s happy, he lives his best life. He hikes everywhere with us, he’s well mannered and fully reliable off the lead. He knows the rules, and that’s the key.

He’s not suppressed. He can still go off and be a dog. He tears around the garden with our other dogs, he sniffs and does dog things. But he’s safe when doing it all.

I see a lot of judgement towards these tools from people owning dogs who would never require these tools. That’s great. And that’s also not a problem. But it is completely unfair to demonise the use of a tool which you haven’t taken the time to fully understand. I was 100%, without a doubt, against them before I took the time to understand how they worked and how they were used.

It’s imperative that they’re used with a trainer well versed in using them. It’s also crucial that the equipment used is good quality and not something cheap from Amazon or eBay. It’s an investment, but one that is so necessary for a lot more dogs than you might realise.

Take the time to understand others’ points of view. There is truly not a one-size-fits-all approach in dog training and my change of opinion has opened up a whole new world for all of my dogs ❤

Friday morning we went to the pantry with a close friend and client. Sad that it rained all weekend, because since I have no building currently I’m limited to sessions being when it’s not raining. The cold and snow don’t matter, as we can still do hour sessions in those conditions. Rain on the other hand, we’d all get sick.

I am looking for somewhere local to train, that has protection from the elements. I will keep everyone posted.

Been extremely sick the last few weeks, and I recently came in contact with someone who was COVID Positive(at my night job, I’m negative but still taking precautions) so I’ve been out of touch.

Rohaven has been an absolute trooper through all of it. Hopefully I feel better this weekend though so I can get back out there

Today we are absolutely heartbroken to know that this angel gained his wings and halo. Meeko gained his wings and joined his predecessors at the Rainbow Bridge this morning.

We remember the day your handler brought you home. We remember the fear in your eyes and how unsure you were of everything that first day, and we remember the confidence and happiness in your eyes the last day we saw you. We proudly watched as you grew from that scared pup to walking with confidence. You were an extremely good boy, who loved with everything you could. We miss you already

Fly high Meeko, you will always be loved and remembered.

NOTICE:

It has come to my attention that there is someone who is an acquaintance, who knows absolutely nothing about my medical history, is claiming that I’m faking my need for a service dog.

I owe absolutely NO-ONE this information, but this is just ONE form filled out by my medical team for Rohaven to come to work with me. I suffer from General Anxiety Disorder, Social Anxiety Disorder, C-TPSD, and agoraphobia for an extremely short list of psychiatric conditions that disable me. I’m completely blind in one eye, have extremely limited vision in the other eye, and am 100% night blind. My joints lock up and dislocate randomly, I get dizzy and have fainted on multiple occasions…. That’s the cliff notes version of my physical conditions that disable me.
Rohaven is task trained to help me with my disabilities, he is also my demo dog. He has been training for over three years, and he knows his job extremely well.

TO THE PERSON MAKING THESE CLAIMS(because I know you’ve been stalking me. I have little birds everywhere, just remember that.) :
You want to argue with my medical team on if I qualify for a service dog, send me a message. I’ll sign releases for them to tell you just how wrong you are. But please have the life you deserve, and know that I hear everything.

To everyone else who has supported us from the day of our conception as a training company (I’ve been working towards this goal for over 6 years now) : thank you for all your support 💕 y’all are the best. Have a picture of Rohaven on our walk to work tonight for tax because y’all didn’t need to see this rant 💕 I hope you all have a blessed day

This past sunday Rohaven went to the Menominee Park and Zoo with my family. It was a great trip for all of us.

But yesterday (Thursday 8/3/2023) meekos journey. ran into a reactive pet dog while there training with his handler. As a Service Dog handler myself I am absolutely appalled by the response that they received from Zoo staff. Even though the sign on the gate AND the website clearly says “No pets” staff said the zoo was “pet friendly” and that “there is nothing that they can do”. Please teach your staff/volunteers the Zoo rules, because this incident was unacceptable

Let me impart some knowledge on everyone. Even a SERVICE DOG per the ADA can be removed if they are causing a scene.

Rohaven got some complements from people at the park today! ☺️ It’s always nice to hear that your hard work has paid off. Also did a few last minute runs with my family to grab stuff from a couple stores before they closed. Rohaven was absolutely fantastic! He was able to easily switch between forward momentum pull and guide just by asking him to wait and switching which handle I was holding. I couldn’t be more proud of him today.

Hopefully getting Rohaven ready to be coming to work with me will pay off 🤣. We should hopefully be meeting Tuesday morning to discuss it with HR!

Rohaven rocking his new Bridgeport K9 Equipment mobility harness with guide and counter balance handle in burgundy!
The counter balance handle is set up for Forward Momentum Pull, and the Mobility Handle is actually for grounding and for a harness sign that has to be ordered yet.

NOTE: Rohaven is 3 years old and has had his hips and elbows officially certified by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals. He has also has been cleared for light to heavy mobility(specifically for myself) by his orthopedic veterinarian. We also got the small Y-Front Harnesses from Bridgeport cleared by the same vet. Any form of mobility work should be done only AFTER OFA clearances and approval from an orthopedic veterinarian.

Rohaven had an amazing outing on Tuesday to Rocky’s Tacos & Subs. 🥰 I absolutely love going in there they are so accessible, and totally worth the price if you’re ever in Oshkosh!

We are hoping to meet with HR, so Rohaven can come with me to work(as my main job is a 3rd shift Direct Support Professional in a CBRF) this upcoming week.

Rohaven has been doing absolutely amazing! I can’t wait until he can come to work with me, at my main job.

Took Rohaven to a local 4th of July parade for some training.

When Rohaven was attacked by the neighbors dog in October, he was pulled from work for about 6 months. Over those 6 months we only focused on rebuilding his confidence, because I was unsure if the attack would cause him to be pulled permanently. For the last 3 months though we have been slowly moving towards rebuilding his public access skills, like ignoring people and other dogs while in vest as well as periodically checking in with his handler.

Today while he had a couple minor slip ups, but for being as packed as the sides of the roads were he was on his game! I couldn’t be more proud of him!

Meet Meeko!

Meeko is an 8 month old Alaskan Malamute mix(we aren’t completely sure on what but we think German Shepherd). He is training to be a medical alert and response service dog for his handler! He will be his handler’s third service dog trained with our help.

Some of the Tasks Meeko will be learning:

- Medical Alert (a couple different alerts)

- Crowd Control

- Finding an Exit/safe place to sit/lay down and guiding his handler there.

- Seizure Response

Meeko absolutely loves his octopus toy and freeze dried liver treats!

We are currently working on building his confidence as he had a rough start to life.

Meet Rohaven!

He is a 3 year old purebred AKC Registered Australian Shepherd who is the best of boys! Rohaven has been training with us as a multipurpose service dog for just over three years now, he is also our demo dog!

Rohaven actually had to be pulled for 6 months after he was attacked by my downstairs neighbors aggressive dog(who they refuse to leash), and just recently returned back to work after we rebuilt his confidence. He still has a ways to go before we clear him for full time work though.

Some of the tasks Rohaven has been trained are as follows:
- High Heart Rate Alert

-High Cortisol Alert (Anxiety Alert)

-Deep Pressure Therapy

-Crowd Control(two forms)

-Full Guide Tasks (for his immediate neighborhood, working on branching out further)

Some of the Tasks he Still needs to learn(or is in the process of learning) are as follows:
-Forward Momentum Pull

-Find handler’s partner(or other designated person) in an emergency

-Retrieval of dropped objects

-Low Glucose(Blood Sugar) Alerts

Rohaven’s favorite things to do are play fetch and snuggling up next to his handler with one of his favorite toys. He loves long walks, and he also enjoys laying with a puzzle toy.
