I custom made 6 of these award plaques and donated them. Last night, at the Macon County Horse Association Christmas dinner, we presented one to each of the recipients of our monetary Christmas donation! It was such a pleasure to be able to make them and they came out much better than I could’ve imagined.

I can engrave or cut pretty much anything. If you can imagine it I can probably make it. Awards, key chains, necklaces, metal business cards, dog tags, tumblers, cutting boards, ornaments, coasters of any material, those neat name wall scrabble things, etc. All custom made just how you want it. Just shoot me a message! For locals, I can promise delivery before Christmas depending on the piece.

Since the husband won’t let me adopt all the animals in the world…I decided “rescuing” one out of the country wasn’t out of the question. So we (the kids and I) adopted Nadala. A big cat that roams about 800 miles in Africa. Today we got to see some pictures of the pretty girl and some of her friends. She is equipped with GPS that tracks her movements but also sends locations with a delay so poachers can’t track her and kill her.

We have hatchling axolotls! They are so tiny and cute! Some are darker than the others so we may start to see a little bit of color variation starting soon. We have at least 30 swimming around right now.

I’d like to thank all of our sponsors and those who donated for helping us to attend this ride once again! 600 horses were in attendance this year and together we raised over $400,000 for the American Heart Association!

I spent a majority of last night in the pasture with my old man, my heart horse, . This stoic old man gave almost zero indication of choke. His only sign of being uncomfortable was lifting his upper lip. No coughing, no rolling, no laying down, nothing, just that upper lip. He couldn’t clear the choke on his own. I rubbed his neck for hours hoping the blockage would move on but it didn’t. I finally called his beloved vet and she flew to the rescue. She sedated him, flushed out the choke, loaded him up with fluids, steroids, and antibiotics. Hoping this morning he’s back to his bright and charming self when I go check on him. A little word of advice that I normally do but had stopped doing out of convenience for myself: Soak your old ponies feed, no matter how well they eat or how good their teeth are, soak it up.

Day 3: baby axolotls are starting to develop in the egg! They begin with a half moon shape to let us know they are fertilized and growing. The round black spots are not fertilized. I lost count how many fertilized eggs I have.

We have Axolotl eggs! In just 2 weeks they will hatch and we will have babies! Now taking reservations for your new easy peasy aquatic pet! Just shoot us a message. This is a clutch from a leucistic (pink) and wild type dark (not the endangered kind) crossing. I can’t wait to see if we get any color out of them!

It was worming day at Happy Hills! Luckily, we don’t have this problem in the picture since my horses know they get a sweet peppermint afterwards.

First real ride “out of the pasture” for one of my lesson riders. It’s never too late to learn something new! always takes care of her rider. In the mean time, tested his boundaries and learned a lesson or two himself.

got dressed up today for the first time since his momma brought him home. He has put on enough weight to take momma around the round pen once or twice today. Just building muscle now. It was mommas first time riding him and I don’t think you could’ve taken the smile off of her face with a crowbar! He’s not quite ready for a trail ride yet but he’s getting there. Momma doesn’t like us posting pictures of her but he was a perfect gentleman for her. He was purposeful, slow, and made sure he knew exactly what she was asking before doing anything. They are learning to communicate effectively together and I’m sure he’s gonna be her baby boy forever. ( ’s tack is just a bit big for him still which means his saddle will not fit properly yet but I’m hoping he will round out and it’ll fit him better.)

Hey there trail riders! It breaks my heart to say this but we are currently CLOSED for all trail rides (indefinitely) since all of our ride locations were shut down after Hurricane Helene decided to make her stop here in our beautiful mountains. We are actively searching for safe riding locations with new trails and will hopefully open back up for your visits as soon as we are allowed. Keep WNC in your hearts as we all heal.

So, for the last week the Happy Hills crew has been literally stripping the broken slick wire around the pasture and putting up new electric fencing all the way around. Why, do you ask? You’ve had your horses there for months and none of them have left before?

Well? I’ll tell you. This a$$hat right here in the blurry picture. He has been escaping the suffocating confines of 10 acres of beautiful green grass to graze on the neighbors much greener grass across the street every single night he is allowed out of the round pen!!! He never does it during the day time.

should’ve been named Houdini! How he missed the electrified top line and electrified bottom line and squeezed his butt through the middle section I’ll never quite know. I wouldn’t have believed it if someone hadn’t literally watched him do it.

I had thought the bottom line wasn’t on when I left because it wasn’t registering on the meter at all. I figured he wouldn’t try it anyway since at home he never did. I was so wrong on both accounts. When I went to adjust the fence tonight, after putting him back in the round pen, to make it a bit tighter I shocked the p**s out of myself! So yeah, he completely stepped between two electrified fences stretching the non-electric fence big enough to get through all without 1. Getting zapped and 2. Getting tangled up in it.

This is his walk of shame back to the round pen.

Last weekend the Happy Hills crew (along with the backcountry horsemen) headed to Burnsville, NC to assist with delivering supplies to all those who either lost EVERYTHING, were cut off from accessing supplies like fresh water, or both. I was up at 0315 on Saturday and didn’t get home until well after midnight. On Sunday morning I was up and at it again to find more specific donations such as propane and animal feed.

While at one of the distribution centers, by mere chance a man was loading my truck asked where we were headed. We were perfect strangers. I told him where we were going and he mentioned he hadn’t heard from a friend who lived near the water. He said that he had given this info to the red cross and hadn’t heard anything back. I took down the info myself and told him I’d send a team.

My team had a hard time finding the address with so many roads inaccessible. When I finally made it up there, we decided to head out and go look in the super duty. We made it to the road but it was completely impassable by truck. I happened to notice a couple people on 4-wheelers at the bottom of the road and I asked them if they’d be willing to go check it out. Perfect strangers once again.

They hopped on and rode out within minutes of getting the same info from me. Meanwhile we waited for their return. We asked every passing vehicle if they knew the man I was looking for but to no avail.

I was losing hope. Finally, after about 40 minutes, we heard the engines of the 4-wheelers coming down the mountain. THEY FOUND HIM! Alive and well. Safe. He was safe. I was so relieved not only to know that this perfect stranger was safe but that his friend would get the news he was definitely hoping for amidst all the loss we had seen so far. This man was definitely cut off from civilization due to the bridge being washed away and zero access to get around or go through the water. They delivered the news that the man I had met at the distribution center was looking for him and we would deliver the good news that he was okay.

The Red Cross ain’t got nuthin’ on a bunch of rednecks.

It was spa day today for the white ponies. I was surprised they didn’t immediately roll in the dirt. We were able to get the red out of ’s mane and some from his tail but was not a fan of standing quiet to let me work it out.
