"You Are Actively Harming Your Child's Well-Being": Teachers Are Sharing The Hard Truths That Every Single Parent Today Needs To Hear
By Claudia Santos, 2 days ago

Being a teacher these days is undoubtedly one of the most challenging and exhausting professions. Between being severely underpaid and overworked, teachers are choosing to leave their jobs at an alarming rate. Recently, redditor u/Holdtheline2192 asked teachers of the r/Teachers community to share one truth they wish they could tell American parents today with no repercussions. Here are some of the opinions they shared below.

1. "Please read to your kids. Take them to the library. Sign them up for summer reading programs. Give them books instead of tablets. Help them find material that is suited to their interests. Remedial reading programs can help, but a lack of home support for developing literacy is the root of the problem."

2. "Your 8-year-old shouldn't be on TikTok unmonitored or at all."

— u/Bluesky0089

"My ex's little sister was this exact child. She could navigate TikTok like no other. But if you asked her to read, write, or count past 10, she couldn't do any of it. And my ex's mother saw no issue with that at 8 years old."

— u/IntensePond

3. "You didn't just have a 'baby.' You are raising a future adult who will need to be self-sufficient, responsible, polite, tolerant, and caring. Stop babying your kids! Teach them how to tie their shoes and that they aren't always right or in charge!"

https://img.particlenews.com/image.php?url=2Es7fy_0uewWX0u00

4. "Your kid is lying to you."

— u/Standard_Earth5931

"I have had kids who bragged to me about how they lie to their parents and get away with it because their parents always believe them. And then they act shocked when their teachers don't fall for their BS and call them out on it. They also act shocked when I don't believe their BS despite the fact that they have bragged to my face about how they frequently and casually lie.

I've brought this up to them before. They just stare at me and have nothing to say. It's mind-boggling. I lied sometimes as a kid. We all did. But I don't recall any of us being this blatant and dumb about it."

— u/justwantedbagels

5. "We can't fix your failures as a parent."

https://img.particlenews.com/image.php?url=4XkKu0_0uewWX0u00
— u/Ascertes_Hallow

"We can't undo the fact that you didn't say 'no' to your child for the first seven years of their life."

— u/KillerKatKlub

6. "Just because I'm a professional doesn't mean you can scream at me."

— u/Dizzy_Negotiation_71

7. "You're the parent. Being a parent means you make the hard decisions. An elementary school child does not need the responsibility of deciding what to eat — you provide healthy food. They don't need the responsibility of deciding what to study — you sit down with them and help them learn. They don't need to decide if they take their medicine — you make that decision. You decide bedtime. You decide on screen time. Children cannot make these choices yet because they are children. They need the responsibility of deciding on broccoli or peas, bikes or the park, which book to read together, and which shirt to wear. So many parents seem to think ' gentle parenting ' means letting them make all the choices, and it just isn't. Grown-ups have to be grown-ups and do the hard things so kids can be healthy and safe."

8. "Please teach your kids basic manners and etiquette. The fact that I have to teach 14-year-olds about simple 'please,' 'thank you' is mind-boggling."

— u/Competitive_Face2593

9. "It's pay now or pay later when it comes to disciplining your kids. By the time you figure that out, they won't be in school anymore."

https://img.particlenews.com/image.php?url=2PRt3c_0uewWX0u00
— u/auntbat

"I'm watching my parents face this now with my adult brother. My mom's a teacher and a pretty good one from my perspective, but she lacks boundaries and discipline with my brother. I (the oldest) have been telling my parents since I was a literal child that they should actually discipline him, and they would just shush me.

Now, he's in his mid-twenties, doesn't work, and is fully supported by them, among other issues. My mom is always stressed because of him but only vents to other people about it instead of actually being a little strict with him."

— u/Dolphinsunset1007

Jose Luis Pelaez Inc / Getty Images
10. "You were likely not parented well, and now the cycle is continuing with you not parenting your child appropriately. It's going to take some serious effort to correct this. It will not be fun, but it will be worth it for both of you (and our society)."

— u/starstruck412

11. "Stop doing your kid's work for them. It helps no one."

https://img.particlenews.com/image.php?url=2FXzLk_0uewWX0u00
— u/theatregirl1987

"I have students who will purposefully not finish work in class so they can bring it home. Then their parents do it for them. These same parents are then shocked when the kid is failing. Tests are worth more, and they can't pass the test!"

— u/theatregirl1987

Shapecharge / Getty Images
12. "We are employees, and much of what we do is dictated to us. If you don't think Starbucks should put iced coffee in plastic cups because it's bad for the environment, don't yell at the barista. (And don't go on social media to tell everyone what a moron she is.) Parents often assume teachers have more power than we actually do."

— u/iwant2saysomething2

"In the other way, I've tried to get so many kids intervention and special education help through the tier system that gets completely denied unless parents advocate. Unfortunately, we teachers have very little say and power over what's best for our students. I wish parents knew how much power they held to help their children who might be struggling."

— u/Fun_Entrepreneur8652

13. "Your kid needs to see an addiction specialist. They can't put the screens away."

https://img.particlenews.com/image.php?url=2nDGFB_0uewWX0u00
— u/Pretty-Biscotti-5256

"At this point, I agree with the Surgeon General . Put the damn warning labels on social media. Hell, let's go one step further: Make it straight-up illegal for a person under 16 to possess an iPad, tablet, etc. Treat buying a phone for your 8-year-old the same as buying alcohol for a minor."

— u/darkness_is_great

Keiko Iwabuchi / Getty Images
14. "Stop trying to be friends with your kids. You can be 'friendly' to your kids; minors don't have to be treated like transactional trash, which was (arguably) a prevalent parenting style with a disproportionate number of parents in years gone by. However, kids need structure and boundaries, so firm but fair is acceptable. Hold them accountable and set the bar high."

"Make kids accept responsibility for their mistakes and stop blaming everyone else or displacing blame when it squarely lies on them for making poor choices.

Read to them and with them at young ages. Instill in them a love of learning. Please give them a loving and supportive home environment and leave your toxic trauma out of their domain."

— u/Another_Opinion_1

15. "You are actively harming your child's well-being and development by not getting them the help and support that all of us educators, counselors, psychs, etc., are begging you to get. You may think your 10-year-old is using the Internet responsibly, but I promise you, they are not. I have yet to meet a single parent who understands Discord, game/streaming chats, etc. You have no idea what your kid is doing online."

https://img.particlenews.com/image.php?url=0nhJQn_0uewWX0u00
— u/Diligent_Boat_

Alistair Berg / Getty Images
16. "I cannot teach at school what you don't encourage at home. If you expect to send your child to school in order for them to 'be a better person,' yet you mistreat them at home, then you get what you give. I can't teach a student whose parent doesn't value their kid or their kid's education. If your kid fails my class, don't get mad at me when YOU'VE been telling them, '[insert subject here] doesn't matter.' I'm not fighting the apathy that YOU, AS A PARENT, put in your kid's head. My 'passion' won't compete with it."

— u/midnitebluboo

17. "Tell your kids 'no,' and tell them often. No, they don't need a 'yes' day. No, it will not traumatize them. Tell them 'no,' and get them used to it — NOW, like, right now!"

https://img.particlenews.com/image.php?url=46u22P_0uewWX0u00
— u/Catalyst886

Kali9 / Getty Images
18. "Society has failed families, and the teachers and the education system are the only ones still trying to put up a fight. We're tired. Be nicer to us."

This is one of my new favorite quotes!

“If you let others tell you who you are, you are living their reality — not yours.

There is more to life than pleasing people.

There is much more to life than following others’ prescribed path.

There is so much more to life than what you experience right now.

You need to decide who you are for yourself.

Become a whole being.

Adventure.”

What are your thoughts on this? I’m seriously concerned about all those that get off on probation- what have they learned? Guessing by reading so many of their prior records- they have learned - NOT TO BE A BETTER PERSON!! - buy exactly how to work the system. They are the ones telling where the drugs are, where others are doing things to get arrested - they plead guilty and get slapped on the hands, and get away with drugs, theft, abuse, r**e and so much more.
I’m tired of even hearing about it - send them to their own special prison. No TV, not exercise equipment, stereos or computers. Our veterans dealt with no air conditioning - many of us grew up without it! Why are they getting the luxuries in life?

What are your feelings??

'I felt that this case was a strong enough case and warranted such action.'

I too am broken, more than once. It hurts, and sometimes it's necessary. But all the time, it's ok - to be broken, to be lost, to lose sight of hope, of Light. Because the Light never loses sight of me, or of you. Trust in your own God-given ability to heal - not meaning "be free of pain", but heal, meaning "to come into a right relationship". That's what true healing is. I've been through parts of my life's journey that just seemed full of crap, so many kinds of it. And looking back at those times, all i see now is the verdant green growth filling those parts, and realize all that crap was actually fertilizer. Do what you can at the time, make the changes you need to make, and never, never give up. In Jane's prophetic words, "Don't you want to see what happens if you don't give up?" I sure do. Strength and health to you, and patience.

I don’t remember most of Autumn, because I lost my mind late in the summer and for a long time after that, I wasn’t in my body. I was a lightbulb buzzing somewhere far. After the doctor told me I was dying, and after the man I married said he didn’t love me anymore, I chased a miracle in Calif...

I made It to the new farm in Owensville!! I have to laugh because I started to post this yesterday (Saturday) and it was just crazy busy with the unloading of the trailer and John Carter vehicle - we still have the van needing a few things unloaded. Then the real work begins!! So much to do, but excited to start with more planning! Other than it being stupid cold last night, and I wasn’t smart enough to turn the heat up!! It is so good to be “back home in Indiana!” The dogs I think are starting to realize that we are home! They will feel much better once that silly UHaul trailer leaves! And we stay!!
The Indiana Horse Rescue should be open by the end of March at the latest! Hope to see everyone soon!!

You just have to love those wise older women!!

AN OLD WOMAN WALKED UP AND TIED HER OLD MULE TO THE HITCHING POST.
AS SHE STOOD THERE, BRUSHING SOME OF THE DUST FROM HER FACE AND CLOTHES, A YOUNG GUNSLINGER STEPPED OUT OF THE SALOON WITH A GUN IN ONE HAND AND A BOTTLE OF WHISKEY IN THE OTHER. THE YOUNG GUNSLINGER LOOKED AT THE OLD WOMAN AND LAUGHED, "HEY OLD WOMAN, HAVE YOU EVER DANCED?"
THE OLD WOMAN LOOKED UP AT THE GUNSLINGER AND SAID, "NO,... I NEVER DID DANCE... NEVER REALLY WANTED TO."
A CROWD HAD GATHERED AS THE GUNSLINGER GRINNED AND SAID "WELL, YOU OLD BAG, YOU'RE GONNA DANCE NOW," AND STARTED SHOOTING AT THE OLD WOMAN'S FEET.
THE OLD WOMAN PROSPECTOR -- NOT WANTING TO GET HER TOE BLOWN OFF --STARTED HOPPING AROUND. EVERYBODY WAS LAUGHING. WHEN HIS LAST BULLET HAD BEEN FIRED, THE YOUNG GUNSLINGER, STILL LAUGHING, HOLSTERED HIS GUN AND TURNED AROUND TO GO BACK INTO THE SALOON.
THE OLD WOMAN TURNED TO HER PACK MULE, PULLED OUT A DOUBLE-BARRELED SHOTGUN, AND COCKED BOTH HAMMERS.THE LOUD CLICKS CARRIED CLEARLY THROUGH THE DESERT AIR, AND THE CROWD STOPPED LAUGHING IMMEDIATELY.
THE YOUNG GUNSLINGER HEARD THE SOUNDS, TOO, AND HE TURNED AROUND VERY SLOWLY. THE SILENCE WAS ALMOST DEAFENING. THE CROWD WATCHED AS THE YOUNG GUNMAN STARED AT THE OLD WOMAN AND THE LARGE GAPING HOLES OF THOSE TWIN BARRELS.
THE BARRELS OF THE SHOTGUN NEVER WAVERED IN THE OLD WOMAN'S HANDS, AS SHE QUIETLY SAID, "SON, HAVE YOU EVER KISSED A MULE'S ASS?"
THE GUNSLINGER SWALLOWED HARD AND SAID, "NO M'AM... BUT I'VE ALWAYS WANTED TO.

THERE ARE FIVE LESSONS HERE FOR ALL OF US:

1 - Never be arrogant.
2 - Don't waste ammunition.
3 - Whiskey makes you think you're smarter than you are.
4 - Always make sure you know who has the power.
5 - Don't mess with old women; they didn't get old by being stupid

*****Exciting Announcement *****

We have purchased a new property in Owensville, IN! We will be relocating to Gibson county located in SW Indiana, and while it's a distance from Frankfort, our location doesn't affect the love and care each equine receives.

Our mission to facilitate the rescue and rehabilitation for equines in need has never waivered, but we have chosen to scale down our operation to give more attention to each equine and adopter. Our standards for adoptable equine remain unchanged and will be well worth the drive to come visit us.

We won’t be moving until late February, and have a lot of work to do, but it can’t happen soon enough! The property is not currently set up for equine so we will be in the process of adding stalls to the pole barn, pastures, and fencing. We are getting the supplies needed to reopen.

Please watch for future updates, supply needs, polls, and maybe even a questionnaire for you to share your thoughts and opinions as we move forward!

Lastly, we are excited to be reopening. We miss our friends and can't wait for your visit.

My niece Onica, a junior in Troop 4111, is selling cookies. Would anyone be interested in purchasing? One thing I love about girl scout cookies is their ability to meet diverse needs. After her mom became dairy free a few years ago she thought her days of eating Girl Scout cookies was over. Did you know that Thin Mints are Vegan? It makes me so happy getting to enjoy one of her favorite "frozen" treats still.

Toffee-Tastics are gluten free and one of her mom’s coworkers who cannot eat eggs was excited to find out that none of the cookies include eggs - I had no idea so thank you girl scouts for including the allergen menus! There is something for almost everyone!

If interested in helping support Onica reach her goal, here is the link to her online sales site: https://digitalcookie.girlscouts.org/scout/onica609305. They can bring cookies to you almost anywhere in Central Indiana - just select to have them delivered by Onica if local. We are expecting to receive cookies at the end of January.

Edited to add: Remember you can support from afar as well. If not local - you can still order cookies online but will just need to select shipping option.

That's right! You can order your favorite Girl Scout Cookies from me online, all while helping my troop and I do great things in our community and beyond! Check it out.

There is an old pony in a big pen by the barn. He has no real purpose. No kids ride him, he is not a companion to another old horse.
We have no history together. He came into my life by happenstance. There are no fond, warm fuzzy memories. I owe him nothing. But he’s polite and kind, and nickers to me as I come out the door in the morning.
He eats a princely sum of special food, and has a premium round bale of irrigated grass that the other horses can only dream of. His water is fresh, and warmed in the winter. I’ve gone out there late at night to make sure he has food, and he’s the first thing I attend to after morning coffee.
Why? Why not send him to the sale where ‘someone’ will want him? At 40 cents a pound, he’d be worth a nice steak dinner and drinks in town. They’ll load him on a truck with 30 other old ponies and horses, and somewhere down that line, if he doesn’t fall from his bad knee and get trampled in the transport, he will become dog food.
There’s a bum calf in our scale house on this cold frosty night. He’s little and scrawny, with p**p stuck to his butt, and a bit of a runny nose. There’s a heater in there keeping the temp above freezing. In the morning I’ll make him a bottle of warm milk replacer and try to convince him to eat some of the pony’s special food. Bob will clean his little house and put down fresh bedding. It would be easier to have left him in the field with the 500 bigger, stronger calves, to steal milk from the occasional tolerant cow, to eventually freeze to death and feed the coyotes that lurk about the herd for just such an opportunity.
There is a wild kitten in the barn who most likely jumped off a utility truck a while back. We’ve been leaving food just for him, and making sure the heated water bowl is full, so he doesn’t have to go outside and perch precariously on the horse waterer to drink.
I guess we sound like saps, the old cowboy and I. Sort of wimpy and un-ranch like.
I guess we are. But at our age, with certain infirmities starting to creep into our daily routines, and the realization that we are not perfect, we are thinking that kindness is a virtue and care is our purpose.
Care of not just the healthy robust animals that make money and pay the bills, but care of everything we are capable of caring for - those creatures that, like us, are in need of a bit more attention to get through the day.
We didn’t go about seeking these creatures- they came to us and landed here not of their own choosing, or ours. But here they are, and off I go to town to a business that provides enough to buy the expensive milk replacer, premium hay, and special pony food.
There may be some karma in all this, or maybe not, but in the end we’ll know we did the best we could for those that needed us.
Peace. Really, I mean it.
