These sweet boys didn’t have a good start in life, sometimes people have the best intentions but get overwhelmed and we are thankful their human reached out for help. These boys are experiencing the outside world for the first time in their short lives. They can finally feel the grass under their feet, smell the fresh hair and run freely in a yard, go for walks.

They are fast learners and just need a little patience adjusting to finally having the life they so deserve.

Rest in peace Caitlyn

Caitlyn the Dog, who became a global symbol against animal cruelty when images of her abuse went viral, died this week surrounded by her family.

On May 27th, 2015, the world was moved by an image that showed a horrific animal abuse case. Caitlyn, the dog, arrived at Charleston Animal Society with her muzzle wrapped so tightly with electrical tape that it had cut off circulation to her tongue and cheeks. She was in a lot of pain; her condition was critical, and her prognosis was guarded. Today, at almost 11 years old, this true survivor is lived a fairytale life. She had a human brother, dog friends, and a loving mom and dad. Her world changed forever on that day. You will not believe the life she lived and who adopted her. Her dad is the prosecutor who put her abuser in jail.

William Leonard Dodson, Caitlyn's owner, pleaded guilty to felony ill-treatment of an animal in August 2016. Dodson sought to silence her barking. A judge sentenced him to five years in prison which he is serving concurrently with a 15 year weapons charge.

We need urgent foster for an urgent situation of a few dogs all under 10 pounds. Please message us and fill out the foster application. These pups will need patience as their living situation was not ideal.

The snow is coming but there is still time to help stray cats survive this blizzard, sadly one of mine in a colony didn’t survive a deep freeze many winters ago. Finding her frozen haunts me to this day.

As a last minute makeshift shelter, you can use a tub, line it up with cardboard and fill it with straw and cut a hole just small enough for the cat to get in and out. Oxford Feed and Lumber sells thin insulation that Canadians use, this helps trap their body heat.

Below are other recommendation, please provide extra dry food, it helps them have enough energy to fight the cold. We all know how miserable being cold means, don’t let them suffer. During bad storms, I used to leave my garage just a crack open for them to squeeze under.

“Cats are resilient and can survive in cold weather, but they can still benefit from help:
Provide food and water
Offer extra wet food in heated bowls to help cats conserve energy. You can also provide dry food, but wet food is easier for cats to digest. Provide fresh water, and consider using a heated bowl or a water fountain to prevent it from freezing.
Provide shelter
Provide a warm, dry shelter to protect cats from the wind, rain, and snow. You can use a large waterproof tub, an old dog house, or a storage bin. Fill the shelter with straw and elevate it off the ground. You can also add a door flap to keep cold air out.
Increase food portions
Provide larger portions of food to help cats conserve energy.
Place bowls in a sunny spot
Place food and water bowls in a sunny spot to help prevent them from freezing.
Cats are most comfortable between 59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Temperatures below 45 degrees Fahrenheit can be uncomfortable, and temperatures at or below 32 degrees Fahrenheit can be dangerous. “

The New Year started with two wonderful updates from our adopters.

Sweet and shy Carmella is doing well and her sister seems to be so happy with a new sibling.

Next week it will be extremely cold in the northeast which may mean death to outside cats. They can freeze and it’s a painful death that can be avoided with an outdoor shelter. A very important part is to make an entrance and exit so that the cat can escape in case a predator finds the shelter.

Happy 2025 ♥️

A heartfelt thank you to all the folks who supported us last year. It was a very challenging year for various reasons.

As the director and founder of the rescue, I have a full-time job and a part-time one, therefore I can’t give 100% of my time to the rescue. Without the help of coordinators and fosters, ASF would cease to exist, and saving our rescues would not have been possible.

To save even one dog or cat takes a lot of time and resources, and sometimes it’s a chaotic effort to make it happen. Taking a sick, stray kitten or dog means emergency vet care and a lot of work from the foster. Sometimes, no matter how hard we try, we find them too late. We had many losses this year, but the only bright light is that they passed knowing someone fought a hard fight to save them.

The victories are seeing these rescues in their forever homes, and to all those who helped us accomplish that, thank you.
