What type of dog water bowl do you use? đŸ¶đŸ’§

The dog water bowl has previously been identified as the third most contaminated🩠 item within the household and can be a breeding ground for dangerous germs & life-threatening bacteriađŸ§« that can put the entire house at risk, researchers at University Centre Hartpury have revealed.

So, which dish is best to use for a dog water bowl? The bowl that grows the least amount of life-threatening bacteria!

In the first study of its’ kind, Hartpury scientists found stainless steel grew the least amount of bacteria and over time, plastic bowls grew the highest amount, but the shocking part was the most harmful bacterial species (including salmonella, E. coli and MRSA) were most frequently identified in CERAMIC bowls!

Lead can also be a problem when using ceramic bowls, and the endocrine disrupting chemicals found in plastic bowls are a no-go! Also be aware plastic bowlsđŸ„Ł can cause Plastic Dish Nasal Dermatitis🙀: Chemicals in plastic absorb through the skin and inhibit the synthesis of melanin, leaving the noseđŸ‘ƒđŸŒ and adjacent areas with pink blotches.

So stainless steel🍮 bowls are the safest, right?

Well not so fast
. there’s even been recalls on stainless bowlsđŸ˜«. In our upcoming The Forever Dog book, in the chapter titled Environmental Impact and the section labelled “Toxic Toys, Chews, and Beds", we cover how to choose the best chemical-free bowlsđŸš« that won’t leach contaminants over time. I’m going to start adding an omega 3 fish oil supplement for my anxious clients

I’m going to start adding an omega 3 fish oil supplement for my anxious clients

If you aren’t already adding omega-3s to your pet’s diet, NOW is the time to do so!! đŸ„„đŸ’§

New research shows more than 70% of dogs have anxietyđŸ”„, to the point, dog bite reports are surging during the pandemic!

Findings published in Scientific Reports, evaluated nearly 14,000 dogs, the largest-ever study on canine temperaments, and found that nearly three-quarters of the pets showed at least one anxiety-related behavior!‹

While a recent article in the Journal of Pediatrics showed dog bitesđŸŠ· in childrenđŸ‘§đŸ» surged during the pandemic.

The pandemic created all sorts of new pressures on families, so these trends are not surprising; most of us are feeling added stress and anxiety, and so do our pets. Many new pandemic puppies did not receive optimal nutrition, socialization and training they needed over the last year.

The great news is, science is now offering new ideas to help curb some of this stress!

New human studies suggest that increasing omega-3 (EPA and DHA) in our diet may protect against chronic stress and improve the way we age. Researchers at The Ohio State University found that daily supplements that contained 2.5 grams of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, the highest dose tested, were the best at helping us resist the damaging effects of stress.🧬

What about pets?

Rodney Habib and I have written an intensive section on stress management in our upcoming book, The Forever Dog, but one quick dietary intervention is to “oil a dog’s brain” with omega-3’s!
Research suggests that supplementing a mildly anxious dog’s diet with DHA and EPA (omega-3’s💩) can have anti-anxiety benefits.

Researcher, Dr Ragen McGowan, presented findings showing a significant reduction (up to 50%!) in both behavioural and physiological signs of anxiety in dogs whose diets were supplemented with omega-3 rich fish oils.

Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), a type of omega-3 most commonly found in fish oils, seems to have the most key role in regulation of mood. DHA deficit is associated with impaired transmission of key neurotransmitters such as serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine, which are core to anxiety, cognitive decline and depression in dogs (as well as in people).
